( It helped somehow, the way the sweet sat on his back teeth, made him tongue their ridges with tastebuds masked by cheap roast. It made the words almost comfortable, and they let go of the place where they sat huddled tight in the dark with clenched fists, ready to bark. )

( Although the half-life of her fallen expression was dismissive, and Harry honestly did miss it when he took a few moments to focus on his wine instead, there was kind of shift in the energy between Gwen and himself that spoke of drawn breath, firm reminders, distance when she pulled her hand away before he'd even really had the sense to hold it. )

( Harry took a seat across from both of the girls. Surprisingly, he found that he was glad he'd come up with the idea for Gwen to join his father's child and himself for dinner. It felt as if some of the pressure that came with being alone with Gwen was alleviated by such a small addition. )

(  Harry suddenly wondered if it was unacceptable that he'd taken Gwen, an employee, here. Their picture would inevitably be taken, and while Harry was accustomed to that degree of privacy invasion in his own life, he hadn't considered Gwen's involvement until right now. After all, they'd had a few infamous pictures that headlined their lives in the past.  )

( The world was different than Joey had left it, and all of that time inside must have accounted for something because it was difficult to find a steady place in his head these days. )

( She breathed in with the shock of it, frozen by years of missing the sort of experience that made kissing second nature. )

The venue is Webster Hall. The entrance hall is dotted with chandeliers, and the sitting area is glamorous, while the dance floor is loud and darkly bright. The upper-level hall that surrounds the crowded dance floor offers a little quiet, and a little privacy. Since there aren't enough chaperones for the space, and it's easy to slip into the dark upper corners without notice. Early in the evening, someone spikes the punch, and sweet liquid has a burning bite to it. The venue is rented until 2 am, and there whispers of after-parties throughout the city.

( Either way, Harry knew that Peter was supposed to end up with them both.. so did it really matter? )

( Once back at ground zero, Elise hauled her catch closer with an exhausted heave. After dropping the collection of bedding onto the center of the living room's Persian rug, she stepped back for a panoptic view of her building supplies. )

When: Before plotness, and before Harry & Gwen had their fight.

( There might come a time, after all, when some (like Peter Parker and his little gang) would turn against him, and he needed Harry to remain at his side no matter what happened. If that required feigning more affection than usual and playing the role of the remorseful father vowing to change his ways, then so be it. )

What: Drinking in a forklift. Yes, really.

( She paused, and she looked at him with desperation, and she wanted to beg him not to go, not to hate her. It was selfish, but she didn't want to lose him too. )

What: A random run-in where Elise is meeting psych release and Billy is scheduled for physical therapy.

When: Backdated to when Elise was released, and also before Spidey got his ass kidnapped.

( Billy was temporarily robbed of words. He watched her walk off, and he had no idea what the expression on his face was, but he felt like the air and thought had been swept right out of him in one cold gust of wintered air, and he was left trying to fill himself back up again. )

(  Pulling his glasses off, he gave a long look to the woman laying on the hospital bed, covered with the thin, institutional bedding, and he had to let out a sigh. )

( Just that single blip of approval at such a simple gesture, pulling out a chair. Harry canted his head toward his father with a smile, a kaleidoscope of pride and warmth at how high spirited his father seemed to be. )
