quicklog: steph/eddie -- carnival

[As the evening's air crisped, the Carnival suddenly buzzed to life. During the day, there were activities here and there, but everyone knew that nighttime was when the magic really happened. Miller stood outside in the cool winter night air, red coat as vibrant as her black tights were opaque and blonde mane bright against the dimly lit parking lot. Her clunker of a car -- a faded gray sedan she'd gotten about 10 years ago -- sat parked some feet away. She was here waiting for a date with Eddie -- a new first date. Well, sort of. If they really wanted to put labels on things. Whatever -- she was waiting to spend time with Eddie. She hadn't seen him since he'd given her a squeeze of fingers and a kiss on her cowled forehead and told her to be strong. Before she almost killed a man with her bare hands. Before she came back to this town, free of their Skull-shaped baggage for the first time in years. And, without all of that in her way, why shouldn't they see how things could shake out?

She fidgeted with her gloves, pulling at the tip of each finger mindlessly as she stared out into the parking lot. To her left, about 30 feet away, was the ticketing booth and beyond that and the fences lay the carnival Eddie had once owned and that she had once found refuge. The pit of her stomach flitted with butterflies, and she began worrying her lip raw. Getting stuck in her own head again. Because this was it, wasn't it? It was all in, all or nothing, balls to the walls last chance -- right? Stephanie could never replicate how she felt around Eddie, with Eddie -- as one half of a whole with him. And she knew, even without him saying, that it was the same for him, too.

No one else could be Stephanie and Eddie. And maybe that was where this was all leading in the end. Two roads diverging and finding each other once again.

The only way to find out was trying, and so they set the date (Friday at the Carnival) and they set the dress code (dressy -- because they liked to dress up for each other), and they agreed to meet there just after sunset. She brushed some hair out of her face, and her blue eyes scanned the crowd milling inside for a familiar handsome face.]
