It had been a long time since Oliver had been in a hospital. He couldn't really remember the last time, but he couldn't remember them being this cold. It felt colder than the house in the woods, which was growing colder every day now that the leaves were turning. At home he had his blankets and stove fires, but in the hospital, the sheets were so clean that they felt like ice, and the blankets were thin-knit. The nurses were nice, and he figured that was because they knew that the bill was going to be paid. They gave him socks with little traction rubber on the bottom, and he didn't think he really needed a hospital gown, but they gave him that too. They put his Halloween costume in a plastic bag and tucked it safe on the counter of the exam room where he'd been stationed in the emergency room for what felt like hours.

Nobody was really saying anything. He hadn't told them much either, so it was hard to hold that against them. The nurses brought him hot tea when he asked(it was cold, remember?) but they insisted on decaf... and he still didn't think that was too weird.

In the hospital bed, he looked pale against the bleached bedding. His right arm was bandaged from wrist to elbow, they'd already stitched and gauzed him, medicated him, but hadn't released him. He fumbled with the corded remote attached to his bed, wondering why there were so many talk shows on at once.
