Brandon Graham's King City

I swear one day I'll post something that doesn't have a cat in it. Not today though. Six pages of King City by the talented Brandon Graham under the cut. King City is now an ongoing from Image Comics! Tell your neighbors and your friends!

The cat is a weapon. )

Well... okay, then...
From the pages of DV8, an edgy spin-off of Gen 13 (hey, it's almost Halloween, things should be getting scary), some early work by Warren Ellis. Here, our anti-heroes try to buy some drinks.

The ginchiest series comes to a close
Madman Atomic Comics holds a special place in my heart. It's just about the only title I follow that I can't blame [info]scans_daily for, after all, so, #17, it's final issue, marks a pretty sad date for me. To make matters worse, Wednesday Comics ended this week, too, meaning I won't get my Allred fix again until whenever I, Zombie comes around (no date given yet, which makes it January at the earliest. they're building a backlog right now, which is perfectly understandable given the delays MAC's gone through; three months between the last two issues!)

Anyway, I figured I'd share the story from the last two issues.

(don't worry mods, this splash's from the June issue)

Invincible #66 Preview
This is my first time posting here at Scans Daily (long-time lurker) so I apologize if I've messed up the mark-up or anything like that.

Anyway, I don't usually see a lot of Invincible love around here so I thought I might try to fix that. Cory Walker returns to Invincible for two issues starting this month and it looks like the war with the Viltrum will be upon Earth sooner rather than later. Newsarama has a nine page preview up.

When Alan Moore was crap (Spawn/WildCATs, Part 2; Guest-starring Gen13)
The worst thing Alan Moore's ever written, I'm sure of it.

There's one scene in particular here that's in such bad taste, I don't have words.

When Alan Moore was *not* crap? (Violator: The World, Pt 2)
I've changed the title for this one entry because most of the people who commented on Violator Part 1 said they actually thought it was good. In some cases, very good. Personall, I don't see it.

I'm surprised because the second half of the Violator Vs. Badrock mini-series had a very similar tone to this, but the comments to that were almost uniformly negative.

When Alan Moore was crap (Violator: The World, Part One)
Continuing the look through the lowest point (quality-wise) in Moore's career... This three-issue series was called Violator: The World, or at least that's what the inside front covers of the issues will tell you. Reading carefully though, it becomes pretty clear that "The World" is only meant to be the title of the first issue, not the mini-series as a whole.

It's such an assurance of quality when they can't even do the title right.

When Alan Moore was crap (Violator Vs. Badrock, Part 2)
Before we continue our trek through the absolute low point of Moore's career, here's an excerpt from an interview where he explained how he came to be working on projects such as this for McFarlane and Liefeld in the first place. I figured some people might be interested. Here it is:

Moore: "Sometime--obviously before 1963 came out, after I'd been approached for it--Todd McFarlane, who I didn't know, phoned up and asked if I wanted to do an issue of Spawn. At the time, knowing very little about this, my thinking was that all I really knew about Image was that they're the opposite of DC and Marvel and that sounded pretty good to me, you know? That was really all I needed to know. I figured that if they're making mischief, then I'm generally in favor of them even without having necessarily seen the books. Todd McFarlane called up and asked if I'd want to write an issue of Spawn, which I really didn't know what Spawn was. But I said, "Yeah I can write one," and I said that before he'd offered me any money for it, you know? When he started to tell me how much money he'd give for doing it I kind of demurred and said, "Look, I'll do this for whatever the going rate is," just to be generally supportive of something which at the time I saw as fighting back against the big companies.
"So yeah, I did a couple of other stories for Todd McFarlane, for Rob Liefeld. . ."

And thus were born some truly awful stories. Well, speaking of which, onto the second half of Violator Vs. Badrock...

Inside Pat Lee
I stumbled on this while preparing the "When Alan Moore was crap" entries. There was a time when Rob Liefeld's Extreme Studios was putting profiles of its talent in the Extreme comics. The person in the spotlight would list likes, dislikes, influences, etc. One time, the person chosen for this honor who a young up-and-comer named Pat Lee.

I know the guy has his fans here, especially among the Transformers fans, so I thought some of you folks might enjoy this.

Obama! Liefeld! Madrock!
Sorry to have kept all y'all waiting.

4 pages from the newest issue of Youngblood, Rob's long awaited return to writing and pencilling his baby. If you're an Obamaniac (aren't we all?), you should know these are the *only* Liefeld pages featuring O in this issue.

There is an Obama cover as this is a flip book with a short supplemental tale with an Obama cameo (pencilled by Liefeld protege Marat Mychaels) but this's a new book so four scans allowed only.

When Alan Moore Was Crap (Violator Vs. Badrock, Pt 1.)
I originally said I was going to post Spawn/WildC.A.T.s, surely the nadir of Moore's sub-par Image work, next. But I've decided that I'd rather build up (down?) to it first. So I'll be posting some of the other projects Moore did for Image during the mid-90s that, while not as bad as Spawn/WildC.A.T.s, are still pretty durn bad. Here's Violator Vs. Badrock.

Yes, Alan Moore really wrote this.

I may have sold the soul of my firstborn for these...
One page from Phonogram #6, by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKekvie that I felt HAD to be shared. I have FINALLY gotten my gubbey hands on all six issues of this story, and this needs sharing because in a work that is FILLED with awesomeness, this is one of the most beautiful pages that I could ever show that wouldn't give things away.

Mike Allred's "Stardust the Super-Wizard"
Since the rediscovery of Fletcher Hanks' work, there have been a couple of modern takes on his most famous creation, Stardust the Super-Wizard. Alan Moore didn't hold anything back when Stardust cameo'd in League of Extraordinary Gentleman. A different take on Stardust can be found in Fantastic Comics #24, part of the Next Issue Project put out by Image Comics, with art by Mike Allred. "A Stardust comic illustrated by the guy who did Madman? Awesome!" you may be thinking. Um. Well...

Comics you should be reading - G-Man! Luckily there's a preview
Newsarama have posted a preview to Chris "Mini-Marvels" Giarrusso TPB collection of G-Man, about Mikey G,  fledgling superhero and otherwise fairly ordinary (up to a point) kid, with annoying big brother, chores and everything.

Click on the link below to be taken to the rather wonderful preview of an awesome comic!

Chris also has a first rate website. Click here for help identifying the characters above.

If you liked min-Marvels, then I think you'll love this.... There's a "Calvin and Hobbes" feel to it (without a stuffed tiger), in Mikey's occasionally weird, occasionally hyper literal view of the world.
