Invincible #64
Called it.

While Mark and the Viltrumite rip pieces out of each other, Eve is lying in a bloody heap nearby. Mark stops fighting like a superhero and starts fighting like an animal, completely disregarding his own safety in order to injure the Viltrumite.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Eve collapses after injuring the Viltrumite, and Mark finishes him off by literally headbutting him until his skull collapses, because that's the only extremity he has in functioning condition.

Photobucket

In this issue's letter column, Kirkman says the pendulum is about to swing back towards humor, and that the last few issues have been about as gory as he's comfortable with.

Hmmmm, I really like the artist, inker AND colorist on these pages. That's a rarity for me. Who are they?

Ryan Ottley has drawn Invincible for quite a while now. The colors are by Fco Plascencia.

So basically she's kicked her way out of the fridge.

Awesome.

I should think the fridge is now probably a cloud of shrapnel heading towards the sun! :)

Considering how gorey the last few issues have been . . . . yeah, it better be another 30-40 issues before we get this bad.

Oh, and also, how is it that Mark's skull is stronger than Conquest's, when it's been established through this whole arc that, as a full Viltrumite, Conquest is stronger than Mark?

Maybe he hit Conquest in a way he rammed the top of his head on Conquest's face.

Assuming that Viltrumite skeletal structure works anything at all like ours, the front of your skull from the eyesockets down is actually relatively fragile. The top of your skull, from your eyebrows up, is one of the most durable parts of the human body.

Show Conquest punching through Eve's chest? Sure. Show Invincible headbutting Conquest to death? Sure.

Eve's nipples? Perish the thought.

Ah, western culture.

Yep. It's something Kirkman has made a point about a few times. He can put as much blood, gore, dismemberment and mutilation as he likes in the book, but any girly bits (and, I should think, blokey bits) are a surefire way of getting his comic put in a sealed bag on the top shelf.

So very happy that Atom Eve wasn't fridged. And also that we might actually see a return to the funny that attracted me to this book in the first place.

In America's film ratings system, an erect penis is actually more taboo than full frontal female nudity; the latter means an R, the former an automatic NC-17.

No, I have. Dare you suggest the MPAA is inconsistently applying their sacred rules?

Or that they can't be bought off, argued with or otherwise "lawyered."

Hell, Trey Parker and Matt Stone when making the South Park Movie would, upon recieving objections from the MPAA, make the scenes in question twice as bad/offensive.

And the enhanced scene would be accepted.

Walk Hard also had prolonged exposure of the old frank 'n' beans in it, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't NC-17, either. I think that it may have something to do with lascivious display, and in this case it was just a guy standing around naked.

NC-17 is for an erect penis; if the guy is just naked, that's R.

Remember what this war is for!

Explicit Deplorable violence is OK, as long as no one mentiones sex or uses bad language!

Yep, we can show a million violent deaths, but not the tender act of lovemaking.

Not adding anything fresh, just popping in to declare Icon Love.

It's a little more gory than I'm comfortable with, frankly, although that may have been Kirkman's point.

I imagine that's some safety mechanism Eve's dad built into her -- in the case of her death, her mental block against manipulating living matter (established in her miniseries) goes away so she can fix herself.

Note that she flayed Conquest's skin off right afterwards. That was not something she could have done before!

I'm wondering if this is going to lead towards Eve playing God.

Eve

Eve's mental block is created by her herself. She was basically mad enough to ignore it. The Viltrumites mental block prevents too much external use of power.

The question is will her block slam down again. Atom Eve is the most poweful person around.

Flaying a viltumites skin is hard. It meant that her control dominated his for one second until the pain happened. (Then it got easier for her)
