When Alan Moore was crap (Violator: The World, Part One)
Continuing the look through the lowest point (quality-wise) in Moore's career... This three-issue series was called Violator: The World, or at least that's what the inside front covers of the issues will tell you. Reading carefully though, it becomes pretty clear that "The World" is only meant to be the title of the first issue, not the mini-series as a whole.

It's such an assurance of quality when they can't even do the title right.

Violator is Spawn's arch-enemy, or something along those lines. He's a demon. At the beginning of this series, presumably due to events that happened in another comic, he's lost his powers and is trapped as a human on Earth.

Those are Violator's brothers (Vindicator, Vaporizer, Vandalizer, and Vacillator; Moore creations all) checking on him. He's in trouble with the mob (which, again, presumably ties into goings-on in another comic), who are about to drown him at the docks. However, he's not easy to kill, as the mobsters discover when he grabs onto one of their neckties.

Mob boss Tony T. decides to hire an assassin to bring down Violator, and so we meet another Moore creation:

The Admonisher tracks Violator down at a mall. "I am the Admonisher!... and I'm here to give you a darn good telling off!"

"...your FLESH and BlOOD!" His brother have shown show up to kill him themselves, before the Admonisher does.

And always remember, the Spawn/WildCATs mini-series was worse.

	Yes, this is bad, but The Admonisher is hilarious. The only better Punisher-riparody I can think of is Beard-Hunter from Morrison's Doom Patrol. (Reply to this)

	the Beard Hunter was wonderful. Someone should post it. I only found out--here I think--recently that the Bearded Gentleman's Club was too something obscure pre-existing at DC. As for the post--why don't you just stuff needles through my eyes and be done with it?;) (Reply to this) (Thread)

	Great little series. Unlike a lot of the other "crap Alan Moore" runs, I think he was having fun with this - not everything has to be a deep, meta-textual, silver-age tribute, y'know? (Reply to this) (Thread)

That's what I love about most of the ABC line: they were just plain FUN.

Tom Strong and Top 10 was just fun storytelling.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was slightly meta (at first; it got much more meta later on), but still just plain fun.

Promethea started like that before Moore climbed onto his soapbox for 10+ issues to talk about magic and reality, which brought the overall plot to a screeching halt. I was so disappointed in this that I sold all that I had to that point (I think volume 4, which I couldn't even finish reading).

	I sort of think of this as Deadpool before he was really that amusing. Violent comedy gold. And I have no idea why but I like the scrying pool of blood being different depending on blood type. (Reply to this)

	Maybe it isn't Shakespeare... but I think Moore just decided to type stuff at random and ended up with this. I like it for its sheer 1990's idiocy. Mindless stupidity that's just... fun. :D (Reply to this)

Man, I... I don't really think you're gonna have that many people agreeing with you that this is crap. I certainly don't - I've enjoyed everything in the series so far. Sure, this is lightyears from Moore's best work, but he's obviously having a lot of fun. The whole 'splitting a dipstick' thing is totally warped, but exactly the sort of thing a bunch of demons would do to settle a decision - and the Admonisher is classic. 'A darn good telling off' - heh.
