Seeing Ayn Rand and Steve Ditko mentioned in the same post made me realize it was time for a Shade post.

	I have never understood what anyone saw in the Vertigo book. I thought it was crap from the word go. I did like Shade in the Suicide Squad tho'. Much like the Dark Avengers Ms.Marvel/Captain Marvel hook up.Lashina kept banging Shade to get him to find a way back to Apocalypse. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Two words: Chris Bachalo.

It was the first time I'd ever seen Bachalo artwork, and it was back when Bachalo artwork was actually GOOD, and in fact, the art was SO goddamn good that, for several dozen issues, it successfully distracted me from the fact that Peter Milligan's writing was shit.

Back when he was doing Shade the Changing Man, Death: The High Cost of Living and The Children's Crusade, Bachalo was brilliantly eerie.

	The Vertigo series is my all time favourite comic, I have the whole run apart from maybe five issues. BUT I'd never read any of the Ditko stuff until now... It's nice seeing the same names, and Wizor looks exactly the same ! Thanks for posting, I enjoyed this. (Reply to this)

You know, some people are geniuses despite themselves. I mean, let's face it, Ditko is kind of a nut. Left to his own devices, he does nothing but argue philosophy - his own particular brand of Objectivist philosophy, no less - for page after page after page. If I'd never seen any of Ditko's work, and was going solely on that description of him, I wouldn't touch him with a ten-foot pole.
And yet - somehow - almost everything the man puts his mind to turns to gold. I mean, the man has created or had a hand in creating more classic, off-the-wall characters than almost any other artist still alive. It's amazing - even when he's out-and-out raving, his stuff is still worth reading, just because his design sense is so incredibly unique.
You know what would be cool to do? Have a team made up of nothing but Ditko characters. I mean, DC has the rights to a good deal of his stuff, they could do it - and oh, what a glorious team it would be. Let's see, now - the Question, the Creeper, this version of Shade, the Blue Beetle, Captain Atom (I think he's Ditko), and, um... I can't think of any others. But aren't those enough?! It'd be AMAZING!
