question for you all
All righty. I've noticed that requests aren't as much of a thing on IJ that they used to be, less because people aren't making as many icons and more because the journals that used to are mostly purged, deleted or abandoned. (Boo.) So I'm kind of testing the waters on this idea, and if I get interest, then I'll set something up.
I tend to make icons and gifs for myself, my fiance or my friends. I don't have all the free time in the world, and both gifs and icons do take time to make, especially the gifs.
Would anyone actually pay for icons and gifs? I'm specifically thinking of icons from lesser-known actors, or actors in less iconned roles, and of gifs that are too long, too big or too high quality for tumblr to handle (since as far as I know, most people pop over to tumblr for their gif hunts). I make about half of the supersuits icons (here is my tag) and I also make the gifs that crop up in the community sometimes. I also do some character photoshopping (also as seen here, with some of buckybear's bases used with permission, and here).
I'd probably follow tessisamess's model of using PayPal (though my rates will be nowhere near hers, because she's a blow-your-mind professional making layouts, and icons are... noooot that) and charge between $5 and $20, depending on what's being made, how difficult the source material is to find, whether I'm working with caps given to me or take them myself, whether I'm being asked to buy the source material myself or I'm sent a file, how many icons come out of it, how many gifs happen, etc. The real question is really if this is something people would actually pay for if it's done by request. I've also made gifs and icons from Dragon Age: Inquisition and would be willing to make character icons or take in-game footage of other people's custom Inquisitors by request. Or really, of any game I actually own, my game library is just small right now.
If your answer is "uh, no?", that's totally okay. I'll still keep making my own stuff (which I'm clearly very content to be doing!) and just won't do requests.

Would I pay to have icons made? No, because when it comes down to it now and then I manage to make a set I need or one of my awesome friends will make a set for me if I need standard icons. I think this is the case for most of us is that we have at least one friend who can make us the icons we need.
Would others pay? There is one icon maker on here that I know of that does that exact thing you are taking about doing and the general census when someone made an entry in their journal about it and a discussion ensued was that no, they would not pay to have icons made.
So hopefully this helped and made sense. I'm full of allergy meds at the moment and go a little ramblely there when I'm sure a simple no would have been enough. :)
I've noticed that despite a lot of old comms closing or being deleted, a lot of people make their own without a dedicated iconning journal, or most people know someone (or knows someone who knows someone). I figured it was worth asking, since I personally would never pay for them -- but I wouldn't pay because I make them myself, so if there's no demand from me, there's no reason for me to seek out the supply.
This was actually very helpful and sense-making!
But...I do know this is a much bigger thing on Dreamwidth and it's much more common to pay for icons there. If that information helps.
I think it tend to the lack of requests a) due to time constraints b) more people have icon journals than not it eems these days too?
I don't have friends who have the time to make icons for me, usually because they're busy with tags themselves or jobs or other such things, and I wouldn't expect them to take time out to make icons for me for nothing. Not when, in the long run, it costs them.
I paid for a 100 set batch on DW, I've also submitted for requests where there's been no charge when you offer 10-15 screen grabs and the maker has the time/energy to make the icons. Again this was on DW. IDK if there's a difference in DW users to IJ users, but I do know that on DW yes, it is a much bigger market for people paying for icons with DW Points (which was how I paid) rather than cold hard cash.
Just offering another perspective.
My DW account, which is the same as this one, is mostly for watching icon communities, codes and memes. It's also what I use to pay for the icons I'd get made over there.
For what you're suggesting charging, compared to what DW users charge, (and when it's working again I can search for some price plan examples that i have on my reading list for you) I think you're being exceptionally reasonable.
You are awesome, a price comparison would be wonderful. Please don't rush, you're doing me a big favor by offering to dig it up for me in the first place.
I have two perm accounts and a host of paid accounts -usually for characters I'm massively invested in, and when it comes to them I will pay for icons to be made. I commissioned Emma Swan icons from a DW iconmaker not too long ago purely because I wanted my own icons, you know?
Okay, so...
manual does commissions on this journal, she's very reasonably priced and one I've seen a lot of people use.
bathus, again, reasonable pricing and fabulous icons.
swords I've never used, and she seems to have slowed a little on the making/requests coming in, but I don't have her double friended so I'm not sure if that's an activity thing or if there's just fewer requests going in.
featherbed, again not one I've used but I've heard good things.
100 DW points is $10.00. Some people do minor discounts for big batches, some don't. There's also the possibility of going up in fives. Almost all icon makers I've seen request a zip file to work from and payment up front or half-now-half-later.
Aaaaand I think that's me? IDK I might've missed something.
That said, while I don't need icons personally, I think it never hurts to give something a try! Plus your work is quality and your price ideas are very fair, so it's a really good start. Plenty of people out there who can't/don't want to make their own icons, and like you said: Requests and icon comms are so sadly dead these days. They're out there, of course, but most seem to be stagnant.
On another note, I think maybe making an icon account on DW would be a good idea. Repost all your icons/gifs there, find the most active icon-posting comms and get some posts up so people know you're there, and post-date or sticky a commission info post on your journal—that way if IJ doesn't get you work as often as you'd like there's (ideally) stuff from DW to fill the gap.
I'm setting up a DW regardless of whether I end up opening paid requests or not just because I forgot how much I actually liked their setup over there. (I had a DW waaaay back when they first opened that ended up super neglected.) I love that they actually let you have sticky notes on communities. I'm loyal to IJ but damn, gimme stickies. Now I can't tell if it makes me young or old that my two reactions to DW are "omg LJ nostalgia" and "oh god LJ why do all the parts move so much". squidded is being a sweetheart and knows more about how stuff works on DW re:paying for services than I do, so I feel good about this.
RP and journal culture has changed so much over the last ten years, it's so weird. Not bad weird, but... weird.
As people have mentioned already, there are a lot of people on dreamwidth who would pay for icons so I'm just here to second that notion. There's a regular anon post that goes up with a section for people offering to do icon commissions if you want to go that route.
