Community Rules

This comm is open to anyone to post codes, layouts, resources, tutorials, and requests for help and content. Of course, we do have some rules, so please read through them before jumping in; thank you!

Treat others the way you'd like to be treated. This is not a drama comm, and we expect you guys to be awesome and stay civil. If a situation gets out of hand, please contact a mod, and leave comments intact so we can accurately handle the situation.

Please tag your posts and check out the tagging guide if you have any questions!

■ Very long posts or posts formatted with your own div styling for organization should be behind a cut to save people's f-lists.

Work safe above the cut, please!

■ If posting codes, guides, etc. absolutely do not post content that you did not make. That's stealing, and it's super uncool, bro! If you are posting expanded/edited codes made by yourself using another user's coding as well, please be sure you have their permission (You do not need direct permission if they allow edits to be re-posted in their blanket rules.)
■ Do not post tutorials/links to tutorials that show people how to steal codes from other users. Again: Stealing. Not cool.
When asking for help with something, please check the help tags (help: coding, help: graphics, help: icons, help: layouts, help: other) first to see if your question has already been posted and answered to avoid duplicates.

We do not allow game ads to be posted on this comm since there are so many communities specifically for that already; if you're pimping a game as an addition to a regular post, that's fine. (OK: You post an RP code and mention in the post, oh hey, also I'm running this game! NOT OK: Posts dedicated to game promo.)

We do allow other types of community promos if they are related to RP (icon comms, other types of resource comms, etc.) Just shoot us a comment in our dropbox beforehand and we'll let you know if it's cool to post!

Hello! A friend of mine is making a new resource website for roleplayers and would love some assistance in setting it up. The Roleplay Network is a one-stop place for helping find faces (imagine PB updates or wikicon but has links to their website, IMDb, icon posts on various websites, etc), combined with RP Resources (tutorials, codes, graphics, etc) while also allowing RP Advertisement as well! We have a Discord Server (here) for you to join as well!

As the website says it is a

The Roleplay Network is a visual, data-driven and user submitted collection of roleplay resources and groups. Our aim is to provide a place where roleplayers of all types can find the resources they need, link to resources they have created, and advertise their own roleplay groups and communities.

Hi everyone.

By now most people are at least a little aware of the issue with Mandy/Ink/Maric etc. I've been in contact with her family, but there's not much else they can do for her at this point. Lately, Ink has been mentioning members of the insanejournal community in their journal-posts and have started throwing around really terrible, delusional and untrue accusations about people and I'm worried about how much that'll escalate.

If you'd like to preemptively ban them from your personal journal or your community, there's a friends-locked entry at my journal which will allow you to do so. please comment here and I'll add you. This will be updated as soon as I'm made aware of new journals that she registers.

If you suspect someone of being Ink, you can comment on [this post] and I'll investigate it and add it to the list. Comments are turned off on this post to make sure no one is publicly misidentified.

If you also play on dreamwidth or livejournal, moderate games or need more information about Ink's journals, a landing page with details has been created over at [info]safetymeasure. You can comment there and the admins of the page will add you when they can.

To be clear, Ink mentions several family members and minors (by their full name) on their journals which are also filled with a lot of triggering material which is the reason all of these resources are friends-locked. We want to do what we can to protect Mandy's family as best we can.

Please contact me if you need more details or have or want any information.

Hey guys! For the last year and a half or so, I've been doing sort of brainstorming type posts over on my journal. I put one up today that I'd love your guys' take on if you're willing! It's about rp resources — the kinds there already are, and what sorts of resources you'd love to see more of or at all! It's here if you want to take a look. ♥

S2
COMPLETE STYLE
FULL LAYOUT DOCUMENTATION
It had to wait a month thanks to the flu, but it's finally here—that's right, guys! A complete documentation of S2 Complete Style and all its components. I've done things a little differently this time around, so my Generator documentation might get an overhaul sometime this year to match, but rest assured it's still just as thorough!

[info]s2complete comes with chapter-based lessons on each section of the layout base, breaking it down into small, easy to manage pieces and working from the ground up.

So what are we waiting for? Let's start learning!

For anyone that has yet to receive the official email, AOL is discontinuing their IM service on December 15th, 2017. After this date, the IM service will no longer work and your data will be deleted according to the email that I read and if you use the AIM.com email service, that will not be affected by the shutdown in December, so you can still use that service.

I figured people should know a-sap so you can get started on saving anything you might want to save. If you know of good alternatives, please feel free to share them down below in the comments. Two services that I've had good experiences with are Trillian and Discord if you want to try them out for yourselves.

Good luck and happy RPing!

I stumbled on a website called Unsplash recently, and thought it might be worth sharing here. To quote their licensing page: "Unsplash grants you an irrevocable, nonexclusive copyright license to download, copy, modify, distribute, perform, and use photos from Unsplash for free, including for commercial purposes, without permission from or attributing the photographer or Unsplash."

The images are beautiful - mainly landscapes and animals, from what I've seen so far - and if you sign up for a free account you can sort them into collections for finding later. (Or you can contribute your own photography, if you're so inclined.) Just be careful with file sizes. Most photos are 3MB or so with massive dimensions, thus you'll want to resize appropriately for whatever project you're making.

Alright, so Checkvist is a pretty neat organizational tool that you can create, build, and maintain almost exclusively through keyboard shortcuts. It'll probably appeal to those who don't like the (sometimes) high maintenance of thread trackers, or those who don't need all the aesthetic bells and whistles of a thread tracker. OR you could be a geek like me and just like making outlines. So, strap yourselves in, kiddos, because we're going for a short ride into the world of ~outline & list making~ *cue Toy Story alien sound* )

All righty. I've noticed that requests aren't as much of a thing on IJ that they used to be, less because people aren't making as many icons and more because the journals that used to are mostly purged, deleted or abandoned. (Boo.) So I'm kind of testing the waters on this idea, and if I get interest, then I'll set something up.

I tend to make icons and gifs for myself, my fiance or my friends. I don't have all the free time in the world, and both gifs and icons do take time to make, especially the gifs.

Would anyone actually pay for icons and gifs? I'm specifically thinking of icons from lesser-known actors, or actors in less iconned roles, and of gifs that are too long, too big or too high quality for tumblr to handle (since as far as I know, most people pop over to tumblr for their gif hunts). I make about half of the [info]supersuits icons (here is my tag) and I also make the gifs that crop up in the community sometimes. I also do some character photoshopping (also as seen here, with some of [info]buckybear's bases used with permission, and here).

I'd probably follow [info]tessisamess's model of using PayPal (though my rates will be nowhere near hers, because she's a blow-your-mind professional making layouts, and icons are... noooot that) and charge between $5 and $20, depending on what's being made, how difficult the source material is to find, whether I'm working with caps given to me or take them myself, whether I'm being asked to buy the source material myself or I'm sent a file, how many icons come out of it, how many gifs happen, etc. The real question is really if this is something people would actually pay for if it's done by request. I've also made gifs and icons from Dragon Age: Inquisition and would be willing to make character icons or take in-game footage of other people's custom Inquisitors by request. Or really, of any game I actually own, my game library is just small right now.

If your answer is "uh, no?", that's totally okay. I'll still keep making my own stuff (which I'm clearly very content to be doing!) and just won't do requests.

Alternatives to Webs

[info]affictitious
[info]rpresources
I should totally be taking pictures of jewelry I need to sell and writing for [info]havenwood, but this is on my mind and I know I'm not going to get any other work done until I get this out of the way, so... Here we are. For those of you who like to code and host your bios and character information off-site have, probably at one time or another, signed up for a free account at Webs.com. You'll also be familiar with just how much they like to jerk their free user base around. It's frustrating to find just how much they want to push their premium products on you and when you're like me, with a $0 budget, that's just not gonna fly. For the newbies to Webs, I can't imagine how frustrating it is to wait x-amount of time simply to downgrade your account to a level just so you can upload your crap. That's not convenient. Like... at all. So I'm gonna chime in with my two alternatives to Webs and other users can totally chime in as well with their own suggestions.

Altervista.org — It's an Italian based organization, but they do have an English language version of all their services, which I've linked to. If you need the Italian version, here it is.

Why I like Altervista — I like AV because it offers me exactly what I'm looking for: A place to upload my CSS/HTML files and it does it without me having to wait and jump through hoops. Of the perks of signing up for a free account? You, the user, get to choose whether or not to display ads on your site. Yep, you read that correctly. You can choose whether or not to use AV's ad service or Google's AdSense. OR you can choose not to have ads at all! Altervista will not ding you for your choice.

Another reason I like Altervista is the resources and tools you have at your disposal and most of it is free, with some exceptions. Starting out, you get 500 MB of space and 10 GB of traffic. You have the option of upgrading your space with an additional 100, 200, 300, or 500 MB for free. The 1 GB upgrade is available for a one time fee of a Euro amount (I'm sorry, I don't know what the USD amount would be) OR you can get it for free but you'd have to activate AV's ad earnings tool (there's that exception I mentioned). If you host your images somewhere else like Imgbox, Imgur, or Photobucket, you won't use a lot of your allotted 500 MB, but can upload images to Altervista. Right now I'm using less than 1% (specifically, 0.4% — that's not even half of 1% lol).

Included in the resources and tools I mentioned are applications such as Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, and a phpBB forum — They just need to be activated and it's free. So, if you're looking to use your web space for more than just RP purposes, AV is a good alternative to Webs in my opinion.

Tumblr — A lot of IJ users are probably familiar with Tumblr, but for those of you who are not necessarily hip to newer blogging platforms... That's exactly what Tumblr is, a blogging platform.

Why I like Tumblr — An explanation of Tumblr is pretty straightforward. One of the reasons Tumblr is a good alternative to Webs is the fact that the user can create an unlimited number of pages, choose whether or not to use a Standard Page Layout (which would match your Tumblr blog's theme/layout) or use a Custom Page Layout. Choosing the custom option allows you to use CSS and HTML to your heart's content. The only downside of using Tumblr for your RP information is that you definitely have to host your images off-site at one of the suggested image hosting sites mentioned above. There aren't any ads, and there isn't any additional bells and whistles as mentioned with Altervista, so if you're looking for something with less fuss and muss, try Tumblr!

So. That's my two cents. What other suggestions and alternatives are out there?
