Community Rules

This comm is open to anyone to post codes, layouts, resources, tutorials, and requests for help and content. Of course, we do have some rules, so please read through them before jumping in; thank you!

Treat others the way you'd like to be treated. This is not a drama comm, and we expect you guys to be awesome and stay civil. If a situation gets out of hand, please contact a mod, and leave comments intact so we can accurately handle the situation.

Please tag your posts and check out the tagging guide if you have any questions!

■ Very long posts or posts formatted with your own div styling for organization should be behind a cut to save people's f-lists.

Work safe above the cut, please!

■ If posting codes, guides, etc. absolutely do not post content that you did not make. That's stealing, and it's super uncool, bro! If you are posting expanded/edited codes made by yourself using another user's coding as well, please be sure you have their permission (You do not need direct permission if they allow edits to be re-posted in their blanket rules.)
■ Do not post tutorials/links to tutorials that show people how to steal codes from other users. Again: Stealing. Not cool.
When asking for help with something, please check the help tags (help: coding, help: graphics, help: icons, help: layouts, help: other) first to see if your question has already been posted and answered to avoid duplicates.

We do not allow game ads to be posted on this comm since there are so many communities specifically for that already; if you're pimping a game as an addition to a regular post, that's fine. (OK: You post an RP code and mention in the post, oh hey, also I'm running this game! NOT OK: Posts dedicated to game promo.)

We do allow other types of community promos if they are related to RP (icon comms, other types of resource comms, etc.) Just shoot us a comment in our dropbox beforehand and we'll let you know if it's cool to post!

Alright, so Checkvist is a pretty neat organizational tool that you can create, build, and maintain almost exclusively through keyboard shortcuts. It'll probably appeal to those who don't like the (sometimes) high maintenance of thread trackers, or those who don't need all the aesthetic bells and whistles of a thread tracker. OR you could be a geek like me and just like making outlines. So, strap yourselves in, kiddos, because we're going for a short ride into the world of ~outline & list making~ *cue Toy Story alien sound* )

Gif cropper

Constant lurker, occasional layout gusher here. Every once in a while when I'm using all of your beautiful layouts, I have some gif-related problems. Either the gifs that are the right size for the code aren't at all what I'm looking for, or the perfect gifs don't look right when they're plugged into the code because they're the wrong shape. So I thought "damn, what if I could crop these gifs to have the right dimensions?"

Behold my discovery, EZGif.

It works like a regular online photo editor and it's perfect for the things I've been looking for. Hope somebody else finds it useful!

Yooooo so I don't do coding because ain't nobody want to see that, BUT seeing as a lot of the link/resource dumps in the old RP Tutorials are defunct or locked now, I thought I'd share some of the bits and pieces I've found across the internets.

YouTube Code Generator

[info]rpresources
I don't know how "old" this information is, but I'm sure a lot of people have noticed that YouTube no longer as the "use old embed code" option anymore on the Embed tab of a video's description. This code generator seems to work pretty well and I got it to work on a recent video post after some fiddling.

Brainstorm titles, first lines, and last lines of stories without a clear intent of what you want the rest of the story to be. Just let the ideas be free flowing!

For meme purposes— Send one! (Note— Since I found this via Tumblr, I guess people can just PM or sent a comment to mutual RPers CDJs or whatever ya'll want to do. This is just a resource I thought was useful and wanted to share.)

✥: a random title
✢: a random first line or last line. (You as the writer do not have to indicate which it would be.)
And feel free to comment on what ideas the phrases bring to your mind! The idea of this exercise is just to get ideas moving around in the brain!

Alternatives to Webs

[info]affictitious
[info]rpresources
I should totally be taking pictures of jewelry I need to sell and writing for [info]havenwood, but this is on my mind and I know I'm not going to get any other work done until I get this out of the way, so... Here we are. For those of you who like to code and host your bios and character information off-site have, probably at one time or another, signed up for a free account at Webs.com. You'll also be familiar with just how much they like to jerk their free user base around. It's frustrating to find just how much they want to push their premium products on you and when you're like me, with a $0 budget, that's just not gonna fly. For the newbies to Webs, I can't imagine how frustrating it is to wait x-amount of time simply to downgrade your account to a level just so you can upload your crap. That's not convenient. Like... at all. So I'm gonna chime in with my two alternatives to Webs and other users can totally chime in as well with their own suggestions.

Altervista.org — It's an Italian based organization, but they do have an English language version of all their services, which I've linked to. If you need the Italian version, here it is.

Why I like Altervista — I like AV because it offers me exactly what I'm looking for: A place to upload my CSS/HTML files and it does it without me having to wait and jump through hoops. Of the perks of signing up for a free account? You, the user, get to choose whether or not to display ads on your site. Yep, you read that correctly. You can choose whether or not to use AV's ad service or Google's AdSense. OR you can choose not to have ads at all! Altervista will not ding you for your choice.

Another reason I like Altervista is the resources and tools you have at your disposal and most of it is free, with some exceptions. Starting out, you get 500 MB of space and 10 GB of traffic. You have the option of upgrading your space with an additional 100, 200, 300, or 500 MB for free. The 1 GB upgrade is available for a one time fee of a Euro amount (I'm sorry, I don't know what the USD amount would be) OR you can get it for free but you'd have to activate AV's ad earnings tool (there's that exception I mentioned). If you host your images somewhere else like Imgbox, Imgur, or Photobucket, you won't use a lot of your allotted 500 MB, but can upload images to Altervista. Right now I'm using less than 1% (specifically, 0.4% — that's not even half of 1% lol).

Included in the resources and tools I mentioned are applications such as Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, and a phpBB forum — They just need to be activated and it's free. So, if you're looking to use your web space for more than just RP purposes, AV is a good alternative to Webs in my opinion.

Tumblr — A lot of IJ users are probably familiar with Tumblr, but for those of you who are not necessarily hip to newer blogging platforms... That's exactly what Tumblr is, a blogging platform.

Why I like Tumblr — An explanation of Tumblr is pretty straightforward. One of the reasons Tumblr is a good alternative to Webs is the fact that the user can create an unlimited number of pages, choose whether or not to use a Standard Page Layout (which would match your Tumblr blog's theme/layout) or use a Custom Page Layout. Choosing the custom option allows you to use CSS and HTML to your heart's content. The only downside of using Tumblr for your RP information is that you definitely have to host your images off-site at one of the suggested image hosting sites mentioned above. There aren't any ads, and there isn't any additional bells and whistles as mentioned with Altervista, so if you're looking for something with less fuss and muss, try Tumblr!

So. That's my two cents. What other suggestions and alternatives are out there?
