There was only so far that caffeine could take him.
Lindsey swung around the bathroom, peering into the mirror as he ran a hand through his hair. He'd finally gotten his hair cut, a few inches off for a more professional friendly look. He was done sitting around idly, slowly going crazy as minutes stretched into hours. It was time to get back to the courtroom. But as the barber's work met his inspection, he noticed the dark circles under his eyes.
He was exhausted but after another few rounds of dream and feel his violent death, sleep was the last thing he wanted to do. The recycle bin under the sink was filled with energy drink cans and the carafe in the coffee machine almost always had coffee in it, no matter the time of day. But it still wasn't helping.
He reached down to let Cerberus out of his crate and headed to the couch, sinking down on it. The puppy hopped up after him, dropping a tennis ball in his lap and looking at him expectantly. Lindsey picked up the ball and tossed it, Reb skittering after it. He was already getting the hang of returning the ball, dropping it in Lindsey's lap and running off again.
One of the shots went awry and bounced into his study, the puppy going after. Lindsey's head hit the back of the couch as he waited.
He felt his eyes getting heavier, a sign sleep was coming. Lindsey pushed himself up straighter, hoping the sudden jolt would give him his second wind. But instead of still sitting, he realized he was standing on a sidewalk. He frowned, staring at the white substance under the soles of his boots. What the hell? With every step forward, it crunched. Something started to tug at the back of his mind, his heart beating quicker.
Salt.
He looked up suddenly, Cathy's voice reaching her ears. She was studying the salt as well, until she realized she wasn't alone. She seemed to know the other young woman hidden in the shadows of the building under construction. Lindsey stepped forward, following as Cathy approached her, assuring that everything would be ok.
The girl began to speak about Lot's wife, a story Lindsey was vaguely familiar with. She'd looked back and turned to...
No. NO!
He started running as the girl began to toy with Cathy, telling her to run and not look back. He could hear the fear in Cathy's voice, the look of terror on her face. She was so scared and he wanted nothing more than to throw himself between her and the girl, to keep her out of harm's way. But it wouldn't happen this time. He was powerless to stop it and knew he was about to see the death of the woman he loved.
When she ran, he couldn't turn away. Lindsey started to run after her as if he could save her life. The sound of bricks sliding against bricks grew louder and louder, followed by the sound of them hitting the sidewalk. And that was when she fell, her scream cut off abruptly. The last bricks fell and a deafening silence fell over the street.
His heart broke all over again as his knees gave out and hit the sidewalk, barely a foot from her. She'd been alone and terrified, falling mercy to someone who had snuffed out her life just because she didn't think she was important. She was wrong.
"I should have been there," he whispered to the quiet apartment. Cerberus sat on the couch beside him, pawing and nosing at Lindsey's arm as the lawyer slept on, oblivious.
