250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping.The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

[ Eric doesn't stay in bed despite the fact that it would probably be wise to do so. He hears the inhuman screech, claws scraping against concrete, the smell of blood and something wild all mingling to inform him that there is something out there to fight. The lengthening of his teeth is almost instinctive as he steps out of his building, takes a deep sniff of the air and begins hunting the things that are hunting everyone else. To be fair, there's probably a good deal of mutual hunting going on. It doesn't take long for him to become embroiled in a fight, covered in blood from his mouth down his shirtless chest to the waistband of his jeans. His fangs are out and he's been fighting with his teeth and his bare hands. The raptors gives as good as they get but biology is against them. All but the most grievous of Eric's wounds heal instantly and those heal within minutes. Watching him fight, it's clear he's pouring all of his anger and rage from the past few days into this fight. ]

[ He is so immersed in the battle, the blood and the freedom of it that he doesn't notice the shadow creeping his way. He doesn't notice the way that it moves like a live thing, wrapping around him and stealing his rage only to replace it with fear. It winds around him, seeps into his bones and his mind, finding the fear that lies in the back of his brain, the fear that he can't conquer despite all of his years of existence. In his mind, Eric is utterly and completely alone. The loneliness drives him to his knees, pushing him down until he is a huddled mess against the wall. Blood tears streak his face, making him even more of a bloody mess than he was before. His hands go over his head to clutch at his hair as he sobs. It is watching Godric die all over; it is seeing Sookie die, watching Pam meet the sun, knowing that Nora no longer exists in the world. It is walking into his hut to find his family slaughtered. It is all the years of loneliness and pain that Eric has experienced or ever will experience rolled into one soul crushing moment.]

[Static on the morning feed and darkness out the window was all Lacus needed. A 200-day veteran of this place who has been -- for good or ill -- hyper-vigilant of late, she wastes no time wondering as to the specifics of this time. She ties her hair tightly back and dons a set of workout clothes with plenty of give, attaching what appears to be a wrist guard to her left arm. Her energy shield has a very limited power source and was only tested once, but it will do for an emergency.]

[She proceeds to the kitchen and calmly starts selecting large knives and heavy blunt objects. Dispassionately, she lines them up on the counter and begins using belts and cloth to makeshift something like a set of holsters. Whatever is out there, she wants to be prepared. She won't be a victim again.]

[Lacus edges along the sides of buildings, peeks around corners. A gash on her workout shirt is one sign of what she's been up to; not the only one for those who get close. Her eyes are changed, dull... and quick to dart toward even the slightest sound. A large knife at the ready, instinct will have her springing at anything nearby -- if an inmate, she'll stop short; if a raptor or other harmful creature, she has every intention to use it. Just as the wet blade indicates she's been doing for some time.]

[ aradia had quietly slipped out of her room and into the rest of the dome very early in the "morning", doing her best not to disturb her roommates, the whip she had made with piter long ago hanging at her waist.

she'd felt something off before she'd even realized the whole deal with how dark it was. but the thing here is -- "off" was familiar to her. this sharp sense of foreboding, hair on the back of her neck raised, conditions in which most species are barely able to see. her race was made for danger, for violence, for a lot of things, and so she's right at home.

before everything goes downhill, she spends her time poking around, trying to find some cause to the unusual circumstances.

when proper danger hits, however, she devotes herself to bailing whoever she can out of trouble first, and revelling in the strange situation second.

(she very firmly tries to avoid letting anyone see any fear-based reaction she has, though it definitely happens.) ]

[ Something is very clearly wrong this morning in MarinaNova, and any time something is so clearly wrong, an investigation is the obvious next step. Naturally, that means Data has wound up out in the dome with his tricorder in hand to pursue that step. Of course, the investigation didn’t last long before the threat in the dome revealed itself. Fortunately for Data, he’s able to defend himself rather easily when the first raptor sets its sights on him, incapacitating it handily.

It seems the investigation is not the immediate priority - with it apparent how much danger the majority of the population will be in, Data takes it upon himself to patrol the dome. He’s focusing his efforts in Sector 5, the sector he’s assigned to through the Defense Force, but he’s moving about as needed, ensuring the safe passage of anyone who finds themselves out and in over their head today. It is his duty - twice over, here - to protect any who need it. ]


[ooc: Basically, run into Data anywhere you need to. Data is available for rescues as needed, to fight alongside, for… whatever. And yes, he might just encounter some fear effect and have to push himself through that. No turning the chip off for him today.]

[ kelly can be found all over. she doesn't have a specific sector to protect, but she's taking this new threat very seriously. she was up early and in the athletic complex at an hour to notice that the sun didn't rise, so she starts off near there when the raptors begin to make their appearance. she doesn't take long to realize that these things aren't friendly and soon enough her training kicks in.

she'll be tossing raptors everywhere, fighting them like she knows her way around a similar enemy. to her, they're just another pack of elites, though this time she has to be careful. this is like fighting with her first suit of armor, back when the human-covenant war was still new, or even before it, when she was fighting insurrectionists. she has to be careful, pick her battles wisely, and fight a little more defensively than she normally would. but she can still fight and fight she does.

if anyone seems to need help while she's running around, she'll do her best, but she might not notice them right away. her first priority is fighting. that's what she's good at. however, civilian lives are also important. if she can save them without endangering herself or anyone else, she'll at least give it a good effort. ]

[Robbins has no inherent fear of the dark, but there's something decidedly unsettling about this disruption in the prison's routine. Still, she's not the sort to cower indoors in the face of the unknown, so she heads out to face it, ill-armed except for her flashlight.

You might find her standing uncomfortably in the edges of fear zones, trying to rationalize away her reaction; she's curious to a fault, pressing forward when she ought to be running away.

If you're in need of assistance, she'll definitely come to your aid... though against the raptors, it remains to be seen how much she can really do...]

[If you were going for a textbook creepy setting, you couldn't do much better than this. The flickering lights, the unidentifiable sounds. It's almost admirable. Early in the day-- before the raptors, before the inexplicable terrors-- there's a part of him that's darkly amused by all this. It's like someone has seen one too many horror movies. Rudy has lived one too many horror movies, so he thinks he's well prepared.

And he is, but only to a point.

Later in the day you might come across him, stalking alone through the shadows, vigilant and grim. He'll be a mess-- at least much of the blood won't be his own-- but he'll be managing, armed with makeshift weapons and surprisingly competent in defending himself.

Much later, you might find him wide-eyed and disheveled, jumping at sounds and hurrying as he looks for... something. Someone. You can ask, but he's not likely to explain anything.]

[ as the queen of makeshift weapons, helen will be wandering around with an armguard and a flashlight in hand in the early part of the day. she's cautious about how she walks, very clearly either trained in hand-to-hand combat or having great experience with it. while she isn't capable of taking down a raptor by herself, she's able to severely injure them, at least enough for her to escape or to allow her to help anyone she comes across who might need assistance.

later on in the day, she can be found at the clinic and will be there until the wee hours of the morning, pulling as late a shift as she can manage. she may or may not fall asleep at her desk out of sheer determination not to let the fear effects she can feel get the better of her. if anyone is to see her now, she's very obviously upset, closed, stand-offish, and snappy, as though she doesn't want to see anyone and is avoiding whatever might actually be wrong, which is a clear indication that she needs someone to bother her.

she can be encountered anywhere in the dome in the early morning hours and in the clinic by noon. ]

[Of course the first real crisis Wally has to deal with as the squad leader involves the lights of the dome flickering on and off like in a bad horror movie and giant reptile-like creatures. Really. It just wouldn't be his life if he got a normal crisis right off the bat. Sigh. He's definitely going to have to have a talk with Miss Kitty about all this when it's over.

But first, there's work to be done. And while he might not be able to do much damage to the raptors physically, he can outrun them. Which is why he will be darting around Sector 4 and other places in his Kid Flash uniform looking to see if anyone needs help while constantly checking up on his squad and friends.]

[But later in the evening, anyone passing by the movie theater in Sector 4 might notice him propped up against the building. They may also notice the way he's clutching his left side with a hand as if he's in terrible pain. That's because he had just escaped a group of raptors thanks to his super-speed, but not before one of them got a good swipe at him with their claws. The wound doesn't seem to be too severe despite the pain and the way that it's bleeding, but he knows that he's in no shape to really do anything until he gets it taken care of.

The problem is that he's having a hard time getting going again. Between the wound and running around all day without so much as even a snack, he just doesn't have much left in the tank. And just because the lights are on and there's no raptors around at the moment doesn't mean those things can't change in a few seconds. So he could really use some assistance. And a pizza. But mostly the assistance.]

Mal had gotten up at his usual time and went to the stables early. As he was saddling up the horses, he realized something was wrong. Namely the lack of sun or morning announcement. A few minutes later and he started hearing the screams. When he looked out there were... what the hell were those things?

He immediately closed up the stable. He wasn't going to let the horses get hurt, minus the one he needed to ride. Mal grabbed large pitchfork and jumped up on his steed. Time to go save people. Or get chased by the raptors.

Sarah didn't know anything about this place. Lack of sun and morning announcement didn't mean much to her. She'd slept somewhere, but she wasn't quite sure where. So she was out exploring when she found out things weren't right.

In fact, it's pretty easy to find Sarah. She's screaming and running and not sure what is happening.

[There's a strange sense of foreboding in the air and M'gann was definitely on edge. She could hear the sounds of everything that was around. She was bound and determined to try and figure out what was going on. Maybe she could use the chance to try and get some information from the Wardens.

But the longer she's out in the dome, she keeps getting feelings that something is right around the corner, that something is following her. And each time she gets it, she temporarily turns herself invisible so she can look around without anything seeing her hopefully]

[This wasn't good. Having run into his double thinking the same thing as him at the convenience store, Duo had a makeshift weapon consisting of a detached mop handle, a butcher knife, and a lot of duct tape. It was better than nothing, and didn't require extra ammo, and had been fast to throw together. He wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Now that he was armed, he headed off to find people who weren't so resourceful, or, at least, weren't so lucky to get to the store, and help them out as best he could.]

[Kitty was scared. She wasn't sure of what, either, which bothered her a lot. If she knew where the fear was coming from, that would have helped her get past it, but it was just there. She had this lingering sense of danger and foreboding that seemed to follow her everywhere she went.

That said, though, she knew something was wrong, and something had to be done. She headed out, trying to see if she could find anyone. It might not be the smartest thing to do, but she was fairly certain she could take care of herself well enough. She wanted to make sure her friends could do the same...]

[Piper's apartment wasn't nearly big enough to offer up as a shelter, so she managed to make it to her restaurant instead to get the doors open and let people use that to take cover if needed. She knew a bunch of new people showed up recently, and not all of them would have permanent places to stay just yet.

Once done with that, she headed out, ready to use her powers and make sure the sector she was assigned to was safe. She would guide anyone that needed help to the restaurant, the clinic, or the hospital as needed.]

[Tieria had seen these raptors before. He had initially come out when the power didn't come up and things were flickering because he wanted to check the kiosk. Seeing it was also down and broken, he had started off towards DF HQ. He'd check in there, make sure someone had dispatch covered, and then head off to his sector to check in with Jack.

He realized what was going on when he heard some of the familiar noises and managed to avoid the raptors the first time. His luck, however, might not hold through the day.]

[Asami doesn't like waking up in the dark. She likes even less that neither Korra or Garcia are around by the time she does. So she decides to set out.]

[She packs a bag before she leaves, with a flashlight and a half-dozen of the experimental weapon prototypes she's been working on. Not s single one of them has been tested or even reached the point where she'd be looking to start testing, but it beats being unarmed. At least the flashlight she has seems reliable. ]

[Unfortunately, it doesn't take long for her to run into a raptor. She tosses a sphere at its feet which vibrates on the ground and provides a momentary distraction but doesn't detonate like she was hoping.] Okay. Just stay put, big guy. I'll just be going now... [She backs away from the raptor slowly, searching through her bag as it advances. Hopefully she can get one of these to work...]

Which is why she didn't think twice about gathering a bag of things by candle light, and leaving her apartment with a flashlight for supplies before hoping to head to HQ to check in. But then she got wind of the chills and had an unfortunately timed run in with a clawed, toothy thing that went bump in the night.

She really didn't have any hope of killing it with only one arm while holding a flashlight and then no light and two arms when it bowled her over, so her main priority was fleeing. There were a few snags in that plan, which included losing her headphones slash communicator to the chomping jaws. But she kicked her way free and fled, seeking refuge in one of the storefronts to nurse various scratches, a bleeding forearm and a good smattering of bruises.

Chances are she'll stay there for a bit before braving the dark again with her cracked, now flickering flashlight.]

[ Normally, this would be the time to hide out indoors where it's relatively safe but since Helix's departure... well. He can't sit around and watch others get hurt anymore, no matter what risks to his life he may be taking. That's just not okay. Back home, he risked getting blown to pieces for near-strangers so what kind of guy would he be if he didn't risk being chewed on by lizards for a dome full of people he cares about?

Baseball bat in hand and flashlight securely held in the other, Aidan is out on the streets. Hunting. Maybe he'll come out of it with a few bruises or scratches or broken bones, but he's not going to let fear rule him... unless he steps into a fear zone of course. ]

[Not good. It's been a long time since Raptors were in Marina. A time, even, that Yuuki can't really recall. Although they are fast, and frightening, Yuuki manages rather well against them. She's strong, fast, and can lift well out of their reach if needed.

It's the other's she's most worried about. While mainly centered within Sector Zero, butterflies stretch across the sectors as far as she can reach without tiring too much. They faintly glow (intentionally) while searching out those who might need help. She'll quickly go to someone if one of her butterflies spots trouble.

So while her butterflies spread out, her brows knit while she physically (her true form) waits, silently, and at the ready for the next raptor to pass her way.]

[ darkness does not frighten him, and it isn't bravery that drives him out and deep into it, armed and ready. he has no intent to hunt the creatures, but neither does he intend to be hunted— and the first time one charges, he plunges a knife deep into it and twists.

it's been far, far too long since he's killed. his reflexes remain intact, fluid and catlike, almost unnaturally so, and they are his greatest advantage in dispatching the threats that come too close. he is deft and well-trained and utterly deadly, but there does come a time when his reflexes fail him. it's only for an instant: the briefest chill of terror that he's never felt before keeps him from sidestepping a blow that fells him and tears across his chest. it was only a second's hesitation, a centimeter too close at that crucial moment, but he is down and bleeding all the same, and he has to make use of every ounce of training he has to silence that instinctive animal terror and regain control of himself, scrambling to his feet.

the pain gives way to fear and then to fury, and once it does, he will attack the wretch with new vigor and cruelty— incapacitating it and torturing it brutally with bloody hands and horrifying preciseness until he is satisfied. find him at any time— as he's killing, while he's wounded, during a moment of fear, or anywhere in between. ]
