250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping. The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

[ Something is very clearly wrong this morning in MarinaNova, and any time something is so clearly wrong, an investigation is the obvious next step. Naturally, that means Data has wound up out in the dome with his tricorder in hand to pursue that step. Of course, the investigation didn’t last long before the threat in the dome revealed itself. Fortunately for Data, he’s able to defend himself rather easily when the first raptor sets its sights on him, incapacitating it handily.

It seems the investigation is not the immediate priority - with it apparent how much danger the majority of the population will be in, Data takes it upon himself to patrol the dome. He’s focusing his efforts in Sector 5, the sector he’s assigned to through the Defense Force, but he’s moving about as needed, ensuring the safe passage of anyone who finds themselves out and in over their head today. It is his duty - twice over, here - to protect any who need it. ]

[ooc: Basically, run into Data anywhere you need to. Data is available for rescues as needed, to fight alongside, for… whatever. And yes, he might just encounter some fear effect and have to push himself through that. No turning the chip off for him today.]

[Not far away, Geordi and a raptor are circling each other. Not quite as well equipped for combat sans-phaser, he's doing his best to try and make it out of this situation in one piece.]

[The raptor lunges and Geordi dives, too slow. A trio of claws slash through his flank and he lets out an abbreviated yell before rolling to a crouch and glancing around the flickering light to try and find cover. He's not done yet!]

[...But a little help wouldn't be turned down.]

[ Thanks be to android precision, that brief vocalization is immediately identified and it's all Data needs to move toward it, without any hesitation whatsoever.

As soon as he's within range, the scene is clear: Geordi, wounded but still in a defensive stance, the raptor still poised to attack. What Data can't possibly be aware of, of course, is that a shadowy patch of something that produces only pure fear is creeping ever nearer.

His initial line of attack, at least, is completed before that draws too close. He moves swiftly and directly toward the raptor, connecting a blow to knock it to the ground. It's not enough to take the beast out of commission yet, but his first priority is to prevent it from striking at Geordi again. ]

[ at some point, he'll run into the lone spartan here as kelly literally takes down a raptor with her own hands. being so fast she's almost a blur for normal humans helps immensely, but still sometimes some of these are a little too fast or too strong for her. usually it's the latter, as they have teeth and claws to use and she does not. even so, she's capable of taking them down and so that's what she's doing.

she kills the one she's working on and turns to see if there are more, managing to catch sight of one slinking up on both her and this other person nearby. she'd noticed him, but hadn't considered him a threat or in need of her assistance yet. however, that new one behind him will have to be dealt with. he's otherwise occupied. so, she darts around to it, faster than human eyes. it also helps that she can virtually see in the dark, so not having a flashlight or any means of creating light isn't a problem for her. ]

[ Too fast for human eyes, of course, is not too fast for android eyes, and as he turns after dispatching of his own raptor, he tracks her movements with interest. She certainly appears to be an organic humanoid, though her speed, strength, and the accuracy with which she moves in limited light seems to indicate she is no typical biological organism.

There is also the matter that she towers over him, but that is less notable when you've met as many alien species as he has.

She does seem capable of handling the raptor that she's engaging, but standing around won't do. So, here comes a bit of android strength as he moves alongside to assist - careful to not get in her way, but to provide some support with extra hand-to-hand combat. (And, perhaps, provide the raptor with a target that is far less susceptible to claws and/or teeth.) ]

[ she's going to hope this person is an actual person for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, the knowledge that a) the covenant would die first before impersonating a human an b) she really doesn't want to deal with yet another threat here other than the raptors. though she may be super-human as far as strength and endurance go, she still has her limits and those are a lot closer than she likes to admit, especially since she doesn't have her armor.

she's faster than normal humans, taller, and stronger by far, as proven by the fact that she rams this new raptor with her shoulder. she's lucky that she was faster than it, too, as it didn't have a chance to deal with the element of surprise that she dealt it, slamming her shoulder into its throat. the move would have shattered bones on any normal human, but kelly doesn't even flinch. instead, she uses her momentum to snap its head back. a moment later the raptor is distracted by someone else behind it, a someone else who's going to be in the line of kelly's momentum.

she's about to issue a warning, but somehow this fight seems to be taking a turn. the raptor is dispatched easily between them and kelly turns warily towards the newcomer. ]

...Thanks.

[ It might be best to leave that "actual person" topic alone - it can be a slightly sensitive matter when it gets called into question. He straightens himself up once the raptor is dealt with, giving her a small nod in response. ]

Likewise.

[ He's certainly curious about her abilities, but this is hardly the time to ask. ]

Are you unharmed?

[ at this point, she considers him as human as she is and for now she'll give him the benefit of the doubt. he doesn't look any different and if he wanted her dead like the covenant did, he would've shot her already.

at his question, she gives one small, firm nod. ]

Yes.

[ actually, she's not fully unharmed. she has a few minor cuts and scrapes by now, but it's hard to tell her blood from the raptors' blood and she certainly isn't acting like she's been hurt or even bruised. then again, this is the spartan who suffered second-degree burns on 72% of her body and was ready to go mere hours after receiving a new lung. to her, as long as she can still move, she's not hurt enough for it to matter. ]

How many more contacts are there?

[ what she wouldn't do for her armor right about now. the motion tracker in her helmet could tell her perfectly. ]

[ He gives a nod back to mirror her own; whether or not she's injured, she's certainly a much better judge than he is. Her movements aren't impaired, and even if she's suffered a cosmetic injury, that doesn't necessarily indicate that she is in need of immediate attention.

At the question, he turns - even in the limited light, he's able to track movements rather easily. ]

There do not currently appear to be any individuals in need of assistance, but there are two of the creatures approximately 32.73 meters from our present position. They do not appear to have detected us yet.

If we can surprise them and work together, we can take them out easily.

[ He glances to her, and gives a small nod. There are certainly a number of questions he'd like to ask about her abilities - under the circumstances, of course, it seems best to put those off. ]

Agreed. At your ready?

[Guess who was checking in with her sector leader! She was trying her hardest to look chipper and ready to go despite that nagging nastiness creeping around in her head. She wasn't going to let it get to her, though. She had a job to do, and she was going to do it.]

Mr. Data. [She tried to give him a small smile, even if it came out weak.] Are you handling things alright?

[ It does come as a relief to see Kitty; one of Data's primary concerns is the wellbeing of his comrades. Though it's a principle instilled primarily through Starfleet, it applies without a doubt to the Defense Force, particularly within the sector with which he's been entrusted. His own smile, given along with a small nod in response, is a bit grim under the circumstances, though as reassuring as possible. ]

Yes, I believe I have been managing sufficiently. [ And with a small tilt of his head, he shifts straight to concern. ] Are you unharmed?

So far. Being so on edge for everything, I'm more likely to walk around intangible automatically than just waiting for someone to pop out first.

[She laughed a little nervously.

As her sector leader, she was pretty sure Data already knew about her phasing ability.]

I haven't come across much, yet, though. Not that I'm like complaining about it, really. It's okay if I don't come across anything at all. But, I'm ready... in case I do, you know?

[The nerves were making her talk more.]

[ He does indeed know about her ability - and it sounds like the best approach, honestly.

Under the circumstances, he's also certainly given to forgive her nerves. He'd be the last one to call somebody else out for talking too much, anyway. ]

That may not be an unwise approach. If you do come across anything but remain undetected, then you are not likely to be taken by surprise.

[ He's looking around the area, keeping an eye on things even as he speaks. ]

At present, I would consider ensuring that individuals in need are brought to safety to be the priority. Your defensive capabilities may be well-suited to that task.

[ Given those apparent nerves, he's doing his best to keep his tone reassuring. ]

I'd probably short circuit someone like you, though.

[ Helena hadn't been there long enough to know when something was wrong but it hadn't taken her long to notice so, not with the feeling that she'd been getting as she wandered the dome.

And that feeling had intensified when Helena had come across a raptor - or it had come across her. She hadn't run, trying to fight it off instead, but it hadn't gone quite as well as it had started. She was still trying to fight it off, but it needed more than just her attempt to do that ]

[ Fortunately, Data spots her in the midst of that - and given the sight of someone in need, he's charging directly in.

There's nothing ceremonious about his arrival on the scene of the fight, he simply goes straight for the raptor with a raised elbow that knocks it off balance and detracts it from its attack. The first priority is to give it a target that won't be as susceptible to attacks by talons and teeth. ]
