Day 221 — Morning mingle : Main shelter
[Wake up and smell the lack of coffee. You're on a bunk bed. Maybe you're a top and maybe you're a bottom. There are five other people in your room. Maybe they're friends or enemies or faces you barely recognize if at all. It doesn't matter much. You can leave this room and you don't need to come back to it.

You should get your rations though. You're probably hungry. You're definitely a little sluggish of body. What happened to that bruise you got sparing yesterday? What happened to your newly dyed hair? Mystery, mystery... Move along. Find the public bathrooms and do your business with a hundred of your closest friends.

Find the kiosk and get your rations. Careful not to let anyone steal them. You won't get more until tomorrow and the bots won't care. They aren't here to hold your hand. If you get sick or hurt and they deem it necessary they will take you to the hospital whether you wish it or not. But why dwell on such things? You're here now and you might as well enjoy it. You even get a free day today.]

(OOC: OOC info. This mingle takes place in the Main shelter over the morning hours.

[ Data is not prone to stiffness or sluggishness upon waking, regardless of how long he's been inactive. This is one thing for which he can be grateful when he reactivates, immediately bringing himself into an upright sitting position in one swift motion. The first thing he becomes aware of is the extent to which his range of vision is limited - his usual routine upon activation is to survey his surroundings, which includes a thorough examination of his surroundings across each spectrum visible to him. But nothing beyond a standard human range of vision is possible for him to access. At the same time, he discovers that his hearing is similarly limited, many frequencies which he can typically monitor entirely blocked from his perception.

A self-diagnostic informs him that all his systems are functioning within normal parameters, even as a cursory examination of the ports in his fingers and forearms informs him that his auxiliary systems are offline, rendering many of his nonessential abilities inoperable. But what is exceptionally distressing is how he flexes his fingers only to find them incapable of exerting any exceptional force, his grip weak and slack by comparison to his usual abilities.

The growing anxiety as he takes stock of his current state is enough to inform him that at least his emotion chip is functioning properly. He lets it be for the moment as he takes stock of the room around him from his position on a bottom bunk. All told, his entire examination has only taken a few moments - to him, of course, it feels like dragging eons. ]

[Buffy is trying to locate everyone she knows and members of her defense force team are included in that. She smiles tightly upon seeing Data.]

Not ideal circumstances, are they?

[ Though he's not going to quite manage to set aside his anxiety any time soon - not unless he actually turns his emotion chip off - he returns her smile with his own, a bit terse and uneasy. ]

They certainly leave something to be desired.

[ And because Data is really less comfortable worrying about himself than he is making sure everyone else is okay... ]

Have you arrived unharmed?

I have located two of my crewmates, as well as the majority of my friends. It would seem that we have, at least, been fortunate in some respects.

[ to someone who's used to viewing the world in spectrums not visible to the human eye, waking up with not only a human's visual range, but a considerable amount of dimness present in her cortical implant is alarming. it isn't so disorienting as having her neuro-receptors being thrown out of alignment while afflicted with sensory aphasia, but it is affecting her depth perception, which makes climbing down from the top bunk she's awoken to find herself on a daunting task. on any other day, she would've slid to the floor with ease, lacking any concern for the state of her lower extremities—but today she uses the ladder and is mindful of her footing as she makes her short descent.

she feels week, sluggish, and finds she is legitimately hungry for the first time in decades. seven is accustomed to her human physiology failing her, for it is imperfect and susceptible to flaws. what she isn't used to is her borg implants malfunctioning to this degree, as even her left hand feels stiff and the exoplating resists when she flexes it.

neither of these things stop her from wandering out of the room and down the hall, peeking in doors until--

the amount of relief that washes over her when she comes upon data is very nearly overwhelming. ]

Annika.

[ That relief is certainly mutual, and as Data feels the way it cuts through his distress, he's immediately grateful that he hasn't given in to deactivating his emotion chip yet. Just a touch slower, a shade less certain than usual, he's on his feet and moving toward her. He doesn't hesitate in wrapping his arms around her, as tightly as he can with his drastically weakened grasp. ]

Are you unharmed?

[ seven holds steadfast to him, welcoming the comfort his touch provides. her hands remain on his shoulders when she draws back, just enough to see his face. ]

My Borg systems are malfunctioning, and I am unable to access the databanks contained with my cortical array. [ meaning she doesn't have access to the borg's infinite amount of knowledge. the only memories and experiences she has access to right now are her own. ]

I am experiencing issues with a number of my systems as well. I have not yet determined precisely how my functionality has been altered, but it is likely we were affected through similar means.

[ seven should be able to pull up his schematics, to look at it in her head while examining him to see if she can figure out what's been done to him to make him malfunction like this, but she is unable to do so. it makes her realize with a startling amount of clarity how useless she would be to her crew if she didn't have access to all that borg knowledge. ]

Without access to the information assimilated by the Collective, I am unable to investigate this matter further. [ it makes her fear helpless, and seven does not enjoy helplessness. ]

[It wasn't until Data was out and about that Tieria would come across him. The current situation overshadowed any lingering awkwardness that might have cropped up from their previous bot-induced meeting of lips, as Tieria was curious what kind of information, if any, Data had been able to gather so far.

He gave him a quick nod of acknowledgement.]

[ Data would never be likely to dwell on the awkwardness of their previous encounter given the circumstances surrounding it, but given the more pressing matters of their present situation and of his condition, it's not even a statistical possibility.

So he simply returns the nod. ]

Of course, not all individuals are yet accounted for, but the number of people I have already encountered is promising.

Well enough. I am not injured. [Which was good enough for now. The lacking of his quantum brainwaves would require an adjustment, but he would make do.] I suppose that is the best we can ask for at this time.

I was considering compiling a list of the missing.

[Lacus has made her way to the kitchens and prepared as gourmet a breakfast as possible: an omelet, potato/corn/parsnip fritters, and chocolate-sweetened oatmeal. She's on her way out to the grass to eat.]

[She's actually feeling much improved. The new place leaves much to be desires but it does give her a sense of purpose she'd been otherwise lacking. However, she's ever-empathetic to how difficult this is for others.]

[ He certainly has remained preoccupied all day, unable to trust anything that his systems tell him, no idea of how he's been altered or by whom...

Still, when he sees Lacus, he does manage to offer a small smile. ]

Hello, Lacus.

[ He hesitates just a sliver of a moment; he doesn't want his malfunctioning to be completely open knowledge, but he considers there to be trust established with her. ]

Oh -- oh, my. [Lacus understood about power restrictions, but she never imagined Data's systems could be compromised.] If you would like some help with identifying the malfunction, I know quite a bit about artificial intelligence programing.

But of course, if there is anything else that would be of comfort or help, I would be glad to do that as well.

I am... uncertain of how to proceed. There are multiple systems and components which have been affected, and there are a number of means by which this may have been accomplished. My self-diagnostics also appear to have been compromised, as despite my obviously impaired condition they do not report any issues. Additionally, none of our equipment which may have assisted in investigating the matter appears to be present.

[ He and Seven have spoken about it, and there have been some worrisome issues raised. How many different things have been altered, what could potentially go wrong in trying to address them without knowing what they're dealing with... ]

I am, however, most appreciative of your offer.

Mm. [That is the noise of a concerned friend, yes.] It would seem this place's history of tampering with our intellectual and emotional selves is repeating itself. I am sorry, Data.

Perhaps if the problem persists, it might be helpful to have someone examine your components, just in case. It's possible a visual examination will yield some information that the diagnostics do not. [She thinks for another second.] I regret that Pink is not here with me. If he were also acting oddly I would be easier able to determine the cause, and perhaps devise a solution.

That is fortunate. Regardless of the height, an impact upon some surfaces at certain angles is still capable of causing serious injury.
