200 — Anniversary Festival!

Happy Anniversary, Marina Nova!

The bots have been busy cleaning up the dome and setting up decorations for this momentous occasion, and by now there isn't a nook or cranny left un-pimped! Bright blue MarinaNova flags wave happily in the artificial breeze together with the colorful ribbons that have been wrapped around poles. The streets are illuminated by strings of lights and paper lanterns and each sector gate has been lovingly decorated with fragrant flower garlands.

Of course, that is far from all! There wouldn't be much of a festival without entertainment and your loving wardens have made absolutely sure that there's something for everyone!

Sector 0 Fairground: If you want to go faster, you have to scream louder! Sector 0 has been taken over by a fairground where you can find such old classics as the bumper cars, a haunted house of mirrors, a more romantic tunnel of love, a roller coaster, a classic merry-go-round and, of course, a ferris wheel.

Game Booths: Step right up! Test your skill and win a prize! Throughout the dome there's a variety of game booths, ranging from the classic ring toss and high striker to kissing booths and dunk tanks. There's also a duck pond game, balloon darts and goldfish scooping game — with mechanical goldfish, of course!

The prizes are all of the carnival variety, including but not limited to: stuffed animals, fake tattoos, cheap bracelets and necklaces, stickers, rubber reptiles, silly hats, wiggle snakes and sticky hands or other sticky things.

Performances: The other way to show your skill! There are two stages set up in the dome: the first one with sound equipment and instruments suitable for a musical performance — or perhaps just karaoke! If no one is using the stage, it will automatically play randomly selected music from a wide variety of genres. The second stage is set up to accommodate physical performances like gymnastics and when no one is performing you're treated to a projection of ball room dancers, gymnasts, modern dance, ballet and similar things!

There are also street performers scattered throughout the dome. You can watch robots juggle, eat fire, swallow swords or charm robot snakes! There's also face painting and the occasional robot dressed up as a human statue for your amusement.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. You can find classic carnival food like popcorn, cotton candy, corn dogs, funnel cakes and pizza slices, but also takoyaki, okonomiyaki, candied almonds, gyros, pirogues, egg rolls and of course snow cones and ice-cream cones. The theme has of course extended to the drink selection and you're welcome to quench your thirst with lemon shake ups, butterbeer, mead and malted milkshakes.

Enjoy!

If they lack skill, they are only good for fodder when put into a life or death situation. Genin are often left to handle more menial tasks until they progress enough that they can fight well enough not to die.

[She was going to agree that's the point, giving them the weapon they can at least do some damage with before they die, but--]

Genin?

First level ninja. Those who have managed to graduate from the Academy, but lack the training, experience, and decision-making skills to be promoted.

[He considers how to explain it. Tear is from a world different from his own so he is not sure how people in her world are measured in terms of progress.] For civilians it may be similar to when one graduates from school before proceeding to higher education. Or an apprentice graduating to more difficult duties before becoming their own master in right.

[She nods, understanding spreading clear across her face] Ah, I see.

The military I serve in on my world has a similar rank after finishing the initial testing: Cantor. They've completed their combat training and education, but can't go on any missions outside the country by themselves. Some become an apprentice of a Major or such in order to move up instead of waiting for a platoon position to open.

All genin work in teams with a jounin team leader. Jounin are the highest of the three levels, one capable of leading missions, training students, and being sent out on missions of their own for indefinite spans of time.

Are you able to apply for certain teams? Or is your placement decided for you?

Genin teams for to further their training are designated by the Hokage. After that it is the chuunin in charge of the mission control department who give out missions and decide who will be in charge of the mission. Mission leader have the right to select their own teams if they do not already have one.

[She nods, mentally substituting the titles Itachi uses with what she knows and is similar to what he's describing. Definitely more Special Forces or Intelligence than the regular military divisions]

Even if they are newly promoted?

If necessary, yes. To be promoted meant that you were found to have the leadership capabilities and skills meant to be the captain of your own unit. If they did not think you ready, you would remain a genin. That is why the genin greatly outnumber the chuunin or jounin.

[Itachi would not see the difference considering the only other military of his world is the samurai who follow the daimyo.]

I suppose that's true... But even with all the training and preparation they may have, suddenly being in a real situation can throw some people-- so it's not uncommon in the division I'm in for some trainers to come along on a mission as an adviser.

[Thankfully, she never had to be babysat]

That is the purpose of the genin level. Young shinobi are guided through missions by a senior jounin, and then sent at times on their own. If they cannot manage themselves, they should never be promoted. Some genin remain in that level for years.
