SUMMARY
The last thing Kira remembered about being in Japan was sitting on her floor, flipping through the pages of her sketchbook, and smiling at all the pictures of her sleeping model. Her art teacher had confronted her that day about why she didn't want to pursue art academically after high school, and after being told that with her talent, coupled with a model as brilliant as Rei, she should at least submit something. Winning first place, well, it was not only prestigious but there could be a scholarship there as well. Kira laughed softly as she shook her head, wondering how she could paint Rei when all he did was fall asleep, but nonetheless she closed the book and held it to her chest.
"What are Rei's colors?" Kira's brow furrowed as she discussed her painting out loud, closing her eyes as she tried to picture the composition. "Bold colors -- warm colors, reds and yellows..." After nearly ten minutes of sitting on her floor with her eyes closed like she was trying to meditate, Kira gave in to the fact that she was uninspired. Frowning, she placed the sketchbook on her nightstand and laid back on her bed, watching her ceiling fan circle above before she drifted off.
She hadn't wanted to sleep for long, still having a long list of things to finish which included visiting Rei and asking him if he could model for her again in a different environment, but little did Kira know that this was the least of her worries. The softness of her bed had been replaced with the firmness of earth, and in the early morning, dew from the grass was wet and cold against her face. "What?" Sitting up with a jolt, Kira's eyes widened as she looked out at the unfamiliar landscape: green, rolling hills and a blue sky that stretched out overhead. There were no houses, no buildings, and though she could just make out the tops of telephone poles, there was nothing in this place that reminded her of Tokyo. "W...where am I?" Pushing herself to her feet, Kira felt a wave of panic rush over her as she turned around, unable to understand how she could be in the countryside and have no recollection of it. She had been sleeping, hadn't she? Warm and safe in her bed?
Rei... Shocked by how cold it was here, Kira drew the edges of her sweater tightly around her body as she focused on the first of the string of telephone poles, deciding that she should follow them until she could find a highway, or a payphone, or some way to contact her mother. For all she knew this could be a dream, but never before had she felt anything quite as vivid as this.
After nearly an hour of walking through an endless landscape of green, Kira watched as the sky grew darker as the sun was covered by clouds, and she felt her hopes fall slightly. While the weather in Tokyo was growing colder, this foreign place was colder still, and she sneezed into her hands before frowning. "There has to be someone here," she reminded herself. "Someone will be looking for me!" She stopped walking in that moment, hesitating as she looked behind her. Will you look for me, Rei? Sighing, there was little that Kira knew what to do in situations like these. In all her life she had never been lost, never been without a way to go home, and now she was by herself and it was hard to keep from feeling frightened at the idea. The only thing she knew -- felt -- was that she needed to continue heading the direction she was walking in. That maybe, somewhere, she might find someone like herself who she could talk to and find a way to go home.
