It's dark, and it's cold, and he's never going to manage this, is he? Harry shifts, careful and quiet.
Without warning he feels it: presence, behind him, invisible in the black black dark. He whirls but doesn't speak. Silence.
"You will have just the one chance, Potter," say the feelings in his head. They stand close enough to touch. "On my signal." Fingers brush his, chilly and yet they brand him all over again, and then Snape retreats into the unborn fray to judge the moment.
Harry waits, warmed, and counts his heartbeats until it's time. He can do this.
