It was not the answer Harry had been expecting when he had steeled himself and asked how many Severus had killed for the Dark Lord before he turned spy. He'd braced himself for dozens.

"Just one? Do you... regret it?"

"It was why I switched sides."

Harry's eyes widened. He had thought his mother's death sentence triggered Snape's defection. "You were close to this person?"

"I hardly knew the man. Nobody on either side was sorry when he died."

"Then why...?"

"It was my potion. An invisible killer. Despicable." Shaking his head, Severus muttered, "Dragon pox, at his age."

"Shhh" Harry murmured as he gently removed Severus' robes and stepped out of his own. The older man blinked when Harry pulled him under the covers and wrapped him in a tight embrace. Confusion lined his face.

"So, you don't want to..."

"Tonight, this is all I want".

Snape's eyes closed as warmth flooded through him, an involuntary response to Harry's touch and the foreign sensation of being... held. He flinched but Harry squeezed him tighter.

"Just let me." he whispered.

And curled safely in the boy’s arms, Severus decided that tonight, perhaps he would.

In which she expressed exasperation at the inadequacy of spoken language.

He asked her why she hadn’t spoken before, and she scowled, his expression on her dainty features. “Father. I did. In your head. You didn’t listen.”

Severus gaped, then looked at Harry, who shrugged. “Thought you knew.”

All yesterdays now, in the blink of an eye.

They stand as silent sentries, waving good-bye together, as their son takes his first step away from them into a brave, new world.

“He’ll be home tonight, Severus, it’s only the first day of school.” Harry brushes away the first tear he has ever seen his husband shed.

“I know. But I can’t help feeling like it’s an end.”

Harry smiles. “Or a beginning.”
