After Severus recovers, Potter stays close as his shadow, lounging against his workbench, watching him refill the phials on his potions belt. Potter’s slim hips tilt, his corded throat curves, bared by the open-necked shirt. He leans in, licking his lips: as if Severus was likely to give him a kiss. The thoughts behind those green eyes have all the (lack of) subtlety Severus expected from a hormonal Gryffindor.

“I’m tempted to throw you out.”

“But you won’t,” Harry grins, maddeningly smug, beguilingly sure.

“Oh? And how would you know?”

The brat beams, fondling a Felix Felicis phial. “Lucky guess?”

“My Lord, let me go to the boy,” Severus’ hand reaches for the phial. I can’t drink, not while the Dark Lord’s watching.

Luck fails him, as always. Fangs rip into his throat.

Ennervate! Someone shakes him. He coughs blood.

Darkness. Bright eyes. Harry yelling commands at the glowing stag. Harry’s hands, pressing warmth into Severus’ neck wounds. “You’re alive. Please. Live! Don’t you dare die now! D’you know just how lucky you are,” Harry whispers, and Severus remembers the unused phial of Felix Felicis in his potions belt.

Severus breathes, gazes up into green eyes. His luck’s finally changed.

Potter’s obscenely, proverbially lucky: Fools’ Luck. He takes it for granted that his ears (behind which he’s too damned damp) might as well ooze Felix Felicis. His luck survives Wronski Feints and Forbidden Forest escapades. He narrowly escapes strangulation while trapesing invisible through the Slytherin dungeons, stretching Severus’ patience whipcord-thin.

To Severus, luck is as rare and closely guarded as a delicate potion. ‘Luck’ only happens to Severus when preparation meets opportunity. Therefore, amid the bezoars and healing draughts on Severus’ potions belt, a phial of Felix Felicis waits.

When Harry’s natural luck runs out, he’ll have a backup supply.
