11:36 am [seriousfic] [Link]	Jack Kirby will scare the hell out of you Of the three Fourth World titles, the Forever People was probably the least of them... basically a reworking of the Golden Guardian concept with space hippies replacing the Newsboy Legion. Still, Jack Kirby is like pizza. Even when there's space hippies, it's still pretty awesome. And one issue of the Forever People easily out-fucked-up anything the Saw ~~franchise~~ tiredness has ever come up with. 10:21 am [seriousfic] [Link]	The final defeat of Darkseid and the end of the Fourth World Saga No, for real. Jack Kirby conceived the various Fourth World books to be part of one epic saga with a beginning, middle, and end... a maxi-series, if you will. Unfortunately, low sales forced the cancellation of each series, although on the bright side, this did free up the various characters to make later appearances in the DC universe. In 1985, Kirby wrote a graphic novel called The Hunger Dogs designed to bring the saga to a close, although DC editorial prevented a climactic Darkseid-Orion showdown from truly closing the book, even though The Hunger Dogs was evidently non-canon. Still, it's an interesting look at Kirby's intentions, thwarted as they were. ( As for us, adventure beckons! Green Goblin plays around with a Gwen Stacy doll. The Joker teases Babs. Etc, etc. But when you're really evil. I mean, when you're dag-nasty bad? You don't have to advertise. 12:19 pm [bluefall] [Link]	When Wondy was Awesome, part 13 (Amazon Queen) Back in the summer of 2001, DC kicked off one of their many epic, universe-spanning Crossover Events with an issue of SUPERMAN in which Pluto goes missing. Yes, Pluto, the ~~planet~~ astral body. This Crossover Event was "Our Worlds at War," and it was not particularly well-received by fandom. Which makes sense; the plot was needlessly byzantine and, as ever, there was a lot of c-list fodder happening, particularly with women, surprise surprise. I find it fairly mediocre standard crossover fare myself, but '01 was quite a while before ICk and Shamazons, so I don't know if that's just a calibration issue and maybe it was pretty bad for the time. But I will say this for it: despite being, ostensibly, Superman's crossover (his badguys, mostly his book, his long-term plot threads), the impact on and contribution from Diana and her corner of the DCU was significant, which is something you don't usually see - major impact on Diana's obviously not unheard of, but contribution in proportion to that impact is much rarer and worthy of note and approbation - and it had one of the greater Wondy moments on record, which is what we'll be looking at today.      ( Also, there's Darkseid. Did I mention that? ) Next time: The League is imperialist and Diana pretty much singlehandedly justifies every statement Clark or Bruce have ever made about hating magic.
