Community Rules

This comm is open to anyone to post codes, layouts, resources, tutorials, and requests for help and content. Of course, we do have some rules, so please read through them before jumping in; thank you!

Treat others the way you'd like to be treated. This is not a drama comm, and we expect you guys to be awesome and stay civil. If a situation gets out of hand, please contact a mod, and leave comments intact so we can accurately handle the situation.

Please tag your posts and check out the tagging guide if you have any questions!

■ Very long posts or posts formatted with your own div styling for organization should be behind a cut to save people's f-lists.

Work safe above the cut, please!

■ If posting codes, guides, etc. absolutely do not post content that you did not make. That's stealing, and it's super uncool, bro! If you are posting expanded/edited codes made by yourself using another user's coding as well, please be sure you have their permission (You do not need direct permission if they allow edits to be re-posted in their blanket rules.)
■ Do not post tutorials/links to tutorials that show people how to steal codes from other users. Again: Stealing. Not cool.
When asking for help with something, please check the help tags (help: coding, help: graphics, help: icons, help: layouts, help: other) first to see if your question has already been posted and answered to avoid duplicates.

We do not allow game ads to be posted on this comm since there are so many communities specifically for that already; if you're pimping a game as an addition to a regular post, that's fine. (OK: You post an RP code and mention in the post, oh hey, also I'm running this game! NOT OK: Posts dedicated to game promo.)

We do allow other types of community promos if they are related to RP (icon comms, other types of resource comms, etc.) Just shoot us a comment in our dropbox beforehand and we'll let you know if it's cool to post!

I'm looking for a good icon tutorial. I want to start making icons again but I can't locate the one that I had used before or remember where I got it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What program do you have?

Photoshop CS2

Ah damn. I was going to say I use Gimp which is awesome but I think there's a comm on LJ called ~icon_tutorials or something like that which would probably have stuff?

I saw Tess's tutoriol for gimp and i downloaded it and I was playing around a bit with it. I think I'll like it once I get used to it. When I tried it before, I was trying to figure out on my own and Shannon uses it all the time but she's a terrible teacher...lol. So I gave up.

I get that. Tess's tutorial helped me a lot. That was about the time I started making semi-decent icons ;p

Besides screen which I abuse the hell out of, I really like Color - Auto - Normalise & Brightness/Contrast. They're about the effects I use just about exclusively.

Yeah it's a lot easier to use after I read that. I was lost with just guessing and Shanon's non directions...lol

I generally crop, then copy the image into a new layer (CTL + J) and set that layer to soft light. Sharpen the soft light layer (not the original). Then add a levels adjustment layer - use that to increase the shadows and the highlights a little.

If something's very dark, copy the image into a new layer BELOW the soft light layer and set this to screen (you may need to then decrease the opacity until it looks nice).

If something's very light, copy the image into a new layer BELOW the soft light layer and set this to multiply (you may need to then decrease the opacity until it looks nice).

I basically have all of the above set up as actions, so I can go through a tonne of pictures easily.

If it's gimp, I'm fairly sure that [info]tessisamess had a tutorial!

Yup, I sure do! I know I've seen some others around though, so hopefully someone comes by with the links haha.

I have tried gimp before and couldn't figure it out but this looks easy to follow so I might give it another try. I use Photoshop CS2 right now.

I'm almost 100% positive you can follow the steps for my tutorial in Photoshop too, actually! All the same functions should be available; they'll just be in different areas so my screencaps won't be a whole lot of help haha.

I put together a tutorial for Photoshop here. It may be some use to you, though it was created using CS6.
