Community Rules

This comm is open to anyone to post codes, layouts, resources, tutorials, and requests for help and content. Of course, we do have some rules, so please read through them before jumping in; thank you!

Treat others the way you'd like to be treated. This is not a drama comm, and we expect you guys to be awesome and stay civil. If a situation gets out of hand, please contact a mod, and leave comments intact so we can accurately handle the situation.

Please tag your posts and check out the tagging guide if you have any questions!

■ Very long posts or posts formatted with your own div styling for organization should be behind a cut to save people's f-lists.

Work safe above the cut, please!

■ If posting codes, guides, etc. absolutely do not post content that you did not make. That's stealing, and it's super uncool, bro! If you are posting expanded/edited codes made by yourself using another user's coding as well, please be sure you have their permission (You do not need direct permission if they allow edits to be re-posted in their blanket rules.)
■ Do not post tutorials/links to tutorials that show people how to steal codes from other users. Again: Stealing. Not cool.
When asking for help with something, please check the help tags (help: coding, help: graphics, help: icons, help: layouts, help: other) first to see if your question has already been posted and answered to avoid duplicates.

We do not allow game ads to be posted on this comm since there are so many communities specifically for that already; if you're pimping a game as an addition to a regular post, that's fine. (OK: You post an RP code and mention in the post, oh hey, also I'm running this game! NOT OK: Posts dedicated to game promo.)

We do allow other types of community promos if they are related to RP (icon comms, other types of resource comms, etc.) Just shoot us a comment in our dropbox beforehand and we'll let you know if it's cool to post!

These are little tricks and tips I've picked up over the years. Most, if not all, of them are so bone obvious that I'm pretty sure most iconners know about them, so this is more for beginners.

But this is a work in progress as I cobble together the right caps for my examples!


TL;DR: LUTs are a digital filmmaker's best friend, but that doesn't mean I can't use it as well. They're an easy (and expensive) way to gain color and grain. This is a quick example.
They're also hella handy for quick gif making and quick color correcting/enhancing.

To use as an example, I'm going to use a cap from the Expanse.

Photoshop has an option called 'Color Lookup', with some LUTs installed.
Here's what happens when I click on 'LateSunset', set to full opacity.

And now to illustrate its worth on another cap, also from the Expanse. I used 2strip.look, which is one of the presets available on photoshop.

To use a LUT for a gif, you'll have to treat it as a PSD (it needs to go on top of your frames), but keep in mind that LUTS are technically meant to be used at varying degrees of opacity.
In other words, just push that opacity slider back until it looks good! You can also multiply the color lookup layer, or set it to screen )- anything goes.

I'm going to use the same cap from the Expanse.

Problems: Blue. Dark. Not a lot of fleshtones.


Click that. Do it. You can even click all three of those, if you want.

And after throwing a PSD (and a gradient) over it, I have achieved this:


I'm fully aware that it's not the prettiest icon in existence, and it could do with some more brightening, but it's already a helluva lot better than the original cap.


TL;DR: Depending on the cap, you might be better off clicking just the one (usually auto color), as tone & contrast sometimes have that irresistible urge to send your cap right back to its original state.
In the spirit of complete transparency, 1) this won't result in the same homogeneous coloring over the entire set, 2) fading the auto color/tone/contrasts is definitely encouraged, but it's slightly more foolproof than match color ever was and 3) sometimes it might not even work. Because of that, color lookup is my new 'thing'.
