Going to a Dead Man's Party, Pt 1
Who: EVERYONE.
What: CASKET’s 16th Annual Halloween Party!!!
Where: CASKET
When: October 30th, starting at 7 pm sharp! This thread is getting posted early so everyone can get a head start on the festivities, since this weekend will undoubtedly be busy.
Warnings: Anything can happen.
Notes: All right, boils and ghouls, this is how things will go down.

Upon arriving at CASKET, for two hours everyone will remain in their mortal forms. Drink, discuss, have a good time. Please label your thread with the location of your character - At The Bar, On The Dance Floor, Lounge Area, On Stage Singing My Drunk Little Heart Out, In The Bathroom Puking My Guts Out, whatever strikes your fancy.

Let’s have everyone be nice and courteous: please ask before entering a thread in which there are already two people, unless of course you already have it planned that way.

At 9pm sharp, the deities will begin to take over their mortal shells, though not entirely; only certain aspects will show through, whether it be appearance, powers, or whatever. No full transformations. In this thread, you don’t have to worry about the deities just yet - I will post a second thread for that part of the night.

Have at!

Waiting for an invitation to arrive...goin' to a party where no one's still alive...

CASKET was done up with bells - every inch of the club was redecorated for the main event of the year. Though Julian professed to like no holiday above another, Halloween had always held a special place in his heart. Even if, in modern times, it was meant for those of a younger age, that didn’t mean those of a younger spirit couldn’t join in on the festivities as well! And he strove to provide the most elaborate environment possible for everyone to get their freak on. The addition of Pax patrons was a nice touch, or so he thought - with how lucrative his neighbors had been thus far, who knew what could happen next?

Red lights were exchanged for ultraviolet, hoping to pick out and showcase ghoulish specters in their best light. Every bartender was done up in the best make-up money could buy, elaborate skulls painted on their faces and dressed to match with bones detailing arms and rib cages. The stage area was covered in a thick, ground creeping fog, The Crypt Keeper Five’s instruments already set up and ready to take center stage once the karaoke was done for the evening. Multicolored string lights of skulls were hung from the rafters, adding a festive air to the space amidst the spiderwebs and other macabre decorations. Julian was surveying his work, his own face done up in a friendly looking sugar skull, skeletal gloves covering his fingers while a suit made him seem rather dashing despite his dead demeanor.

The club was already brimming with costume guests, ranging from the sexy to the obscene; as long as no one toted a fake weapon, anything was welcome. Lingering by the bar, he watched the entrance to see who might show up first - and to see if a certain wife was going to make an appearance. His mind lingered for the barest of moments over what would be clinging to those curves, but Julian quickly wiped his mind clean of those thoughts. Undoubtedly she’d only be here to cause trouble, nothing more. Instead, he ordered a Blue Voodoo Doll, which a skeletal Yvette handed to him with a smile. With his potentially most loyal ally manning the bar, Julian was ready for whatever this evening might bring; his lips curved into a smile as Oingo Boingo’s No One Lives Forever blared out over the sound system.

Entrance Area (Richard, James)

Lucy wasn't really big on clubs. She'd gone to one or two of them on a group outing, but not enough to really be familiar with the atmosphere. She preferred outdoor settings to loud, confined ones, but she wasn't about to miss out on the Halloween party everyone at the complex was attending. She was hoping James would be there. She hadn't seen him since the incident, and she couldn't decide if she wanted to change that or not. Part of her did, because there was a part of her that was always up for seeing him. She was hesitant though, because what did you say to someone after you lost all of your hair on their couch?

She wasn't about to waste time thinking about it, there was a party to take in. With a little help from her new friend Richard, Lucy had settled on the bell bottoms. She hadn't been able to resist them when she saw the bright daisy patches someone had affixed all over them. It didn't take her long to find the rest. She wore a bright yellow t-shirt, a long, tan, ultra suede vest that no animals were harmed in the making of, a pair of large, round sunglasses with pink frames, a chain that had a large peace symbol dangling from it and topped it all off with a daisy chain head band and a pair of platform sandals. It wasn't anything new or inventive, but she was okay with that. It was a costume that gave her enough coverage to feel comfortable in.

She gave Richard a wide smile and surveyed the area. There was so much activity she couldn't figure out where to look first.

"I don't know where to start!"

Now, wasn't this a hell of a thing? As much as the past few weeks had sucked (and oh, had they ever sucked) this party had been one of the few solid things he had to look forward to. And it was, to be fair, pretty much the only plan he had made in recent memory where everything had gone right. The club looked great, screechy karaoke or not, and he was arriving with a date that was both beautiful and funny. That alone was enough to set this near the top of his list of holiday parties. Add the fact that he had found an amazing costume, and that he had an interview for a new job already and, well, Richard had decided that this was going to be a great night. The strange shit that had been happening to him since he got here was not going to happen tonight. No blackouts, no strange feelings of deja vu, no mood swings. Tonight was a night for partying.

He shifted in the bomber jacket, already starting to wonder how long it would be before he was in shirtsleeves. The bomber, and the goggles and cap that came with it, were the spoils of his trip to the costume shop where he had met Lucy, and he knew that he looked good in them. On the other hand, both the hat and the jacket were lined with wool. If he didn't want to end up sweating like a teenage driver... No. No worries tonight. He'd figure it out.

At Lucy's question he turned and grinned at her. "We'll get to everything, don't worry! How about bothering the corpses for a drink, first?" He nodded over towards the bar. It was, he had to admit, impressive how much effort had gone into this party. Apparently not even the bartenders went halfway. "Can I get you something?"

"You think we can actually get to everything?" The bar had gone all out and she was completely delighted by the elaborate decorations and set up. It almost felt like she had walked into Halloween Town from the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. She wondered which one of the skeletal employees fit the role of the pumpkin king.

"I'll come with you," she stuck her hand firmly in his. She wasn't going to lose sight of him in this crowd of spooks. Perhaps the creepy collector from the apartment complex was here. Everyone in the building had received an invitation after all. Lucy did not want to find herself coming face to face with them alone. She was not going to leave Richards side for a second.

Once they reached the bar, Lucy let Richard place his order before she asked for a Smirnoff Ice. Lucy was a lightweight with her alcohol and it had been a while since she'd had a drink. One Smirnoff was going to be her limit for the night, she'd promised her mom that she'd be careful about it. She may have been twenty seven, but that didn't stop her mom from mothering her. It got annoying now and then, but Lucy usually listened to her. She wondered if there ever came a point in a persons life where they stopped doing as their parents told them.

Once they had their drinks, she took another look around the club. "We checked one thing off the list of everything. What next?"

Normally, Richard would have started the night with something hard and burning and strong enough to loosen him up a bit. Tonight, though, he ordered a tap stout so dark that it bore a strong resemblance to drinking bread. When Lucy placed her order (which he made sure went onto his tab) it only confirmed his choice. There was never any good reason to end up more drunk than your date, especially not when that date was the most teasable person in the world. Smirnoff? Really? It took all of Richard's self-control not to gleefully make fun of her for her choice, and he used her question as an excuse to scan the room.

"Well," he said, thoughtfully. "I'll need a few more of these before I subject anyone to my vocal stylings." He had enough musical knowledge to understand that his voice wasn't a gift to anyone. It couldn't be worse than whoever was up there speaking rhythmically about... thongs? Tongues? She really needed to enunciate. At any rate, he required a lot more lubrication before he thought belting Bon Jovi in a crowded room sounded like fun.

But he had been thinking a little too long. Richard shrugged, "I chose this one," he said, raising his glass a little. "It's your turn now. What do you want to do? Dance? Make fun of costumes?"

She grinned. "I can't wait to hear you sing! Do you have a go to song?" Lucy took a small sip from her bottle and licked what was left behind from her lips.

"I hope it's better than what she's singing up there." She gestured towards the stage with her bottle, her expression a mixture of curiosity and uncertainty. "I'm not even sure she's singing an actual song up there."

So it was going to be a night of trade offs, how fun! It was sort of like a game. "I get to choose? Okay, let me think." She surveyed the bar, her eyes stopping on individual areas for assessment. Dancing could be fun, but she'd be more inclined to do that after she had a little more of her drink. After the incident with James, she was paranoid about her wig staying on, and dancing in a big crowd of people made the possibility of it falling off far too probable.

Her eyes settled on the lounge area. That looked to be a safe place. She wasn't sure she liked the idea of making fun of peoples costumes, but perhaps they could guess what everyone was. Everyone tried really hard on their costume, she assumed, and making fun of them for it wouldn't be fair.

"Why don't we go sit and see if we can guess what everyone is suppose to be!"

"Trust me, you can wait to hear me sing," Richard responded, wincing a little at the thought of his own off-key tenor. "Ask me again after a couple more beers, and we'll both be better off." The beer washed down that thought and as Lucy considered their next move, he came to terms with the idea that he would probably end up singing, if only to entertain her. He should probably track down their karaoke list at some point.

When she finally suggested something, Richard had to fight the urge to pinch her cheeks. She really was just that... not naive exactly... It was more like she was both excited and pleased at everything she saw. Not a very practical outlook, he thought darkly, but definitely something that made her fun to be around. Which was good enough for him, especially tonight.

Linking their hands again, he nodded down at her. "Alright. I'm warning you, though, you might have to explain some of the references. Let's find a place to sit."

With their hands linked, Lucy took charge of this trek. He'd led last time, now it was her turn. She picked a careful path through the throng of costumed revelers and found them a spot with a decent view of the entire club. It was the perfect people watching/costume commentating spot.

She took her hand from his and plopped down, patting the spot beside her in invitation. Then it was time to work. There were lots of costumes to take in and only so much time.

"That's part of the fun! If you don't know who someone is, you just make something up. Like that guy over there." She pointed to a man who was wearing a cardboard box. That seemed to be the extent of his costume.

"What do you think he is?"

"A packing peanut?" The guess was probably more influenced by Richard's recent experiences with cardboard boxes than by any actual possibility that any sane person would dress as a piece of plastic. On the other hand, as they had worked their way through the crowd Richard was pretty sure he had seen someone dressed as a soda can. Maybe his guess was on the money.

"Really, I'd guess homeless person, though. People seem to think they live in cardboard boxes." He took a drink and tried to gauge the appropriate sitting-distance from Lucy. The whole body-language factor was a delicate art in dating, and one that was all too easy to ignore. He propped an arm on the couch back and turned a little to face her, hopefully leaving enough personal space between them to make her comfortable but still suggesting a private space. "Explain those to me," he said, pointing across her at a couple by the stage.

James had been at the bar for only a short while. Short enough that he had one beer in him and was halfway through his second. His costume was simple: black shirt, black pants, plastic fangs. Vampire. He wasn't one to get all creative about costumes and shit like that, he just wanted the discounted beer and to check out who from the apartment complex happened to be there.

He also, secretly, was hoping to see Lucy. He hadn't seen her since the incident with her hair and he hoped she wasn't completely avoiding her. Then again, he hadn't entirely gone out of his way to find her, he was nervous and unsure about speaking to her after the incident.

As if his wish came true, he spotted Lucy sitting with...a man. A man he didn't know. James paused, staring at the couple as they pointed at people in costume. Quite suddenly, that need to protect Lucy flared back to life and it was mixed with rage. That...man...sitting with Lucy. He had thought there was something special between the two of them. Now, after they hadn't spoken for a few weeks, he discovered why.

Some men would brush it off and continue making rounds at the party, casually checking out the butts of the men dressed as superheroes, but James wasn't one of those men. Well, he had been checking out butts before but now his mind was completely directed towards Lucy and so were his steps.

He seemed to appear in front of the couple, staring down at them and working his jaw as he worked out a full sentence. "So this is your date?"

Lucy stared at the couple that Richard pointed out, completely baffled by their costumes. They looked like nerds combined with cats. It wasn't a combination she could explain. Just as she was about to come up with a story to explain why the cats were wearing ties, James approached.

Her entire face lit up and she stood, unable to help herself. Despite being completely unsure of where she stood with him, she couldn't help being thrilled to see him.

"Hi," she said hesitantly, tugging at the hem of her shirt. "This is my friend Richard. He helped me pick out my costume."

She turned back to Richard and gestured towards James. "Richard, this is James. He's a..."

What was he to her, exactly? A friend? A good friend? More than a friend? She hadn't tried to classify him before. He stood apart from everyone else she knew, and as a result she had no idea what to call him.

"He's a friend of mine." That was simple enough. It hardly encompassed everything he was to her, but it would have to do.

A friend, was it? Richard guessed that it was more complicated than that. Lucy's pause for consideration said a lot, and nobody looked ready to throw a punch when they found their 'friend' sitting at a party. Whatever he was about to step in, it was a lot more than just a 'friendship'.

But as he sized James up, Richard couldn't quite bring himself to care. Something about this new guy... The familiarity was almost expected when he met new Californians at this point, but there was something else. Something strong, which he couldn't identify. He stood, slowly, and met James's eyes. If he wanted a fight, Richard would be happy to oblige. Lucy was here with him after all, and he was a little surprised by how possessive he felt about that.

And Richard had learned the best way to annoy men like this a long time ago. The smile he offered was direct, and he stepped just a little too far into James's personal space as he offered a hand. "Any friend of Lucy's is a friend of mine," he said in a perfectly calm and friendly voice. "I wouldn't have had anything to wear here if she hadn't been there to help me choose my clothes." The wink at the end of the sentence was probably a bit much, but he couldn't quite hold it back.

James took in a deep breath as he tried to resist the urge to rip the guys throat out. He had been in a number of fights with people through out the years, it wasn't unfamiliar territory for James, but this man... just his very presence irked him. And yet, hearing the introduction, the man stepping far too close felt oddly normal. That was possibly what prevented James from punching him in the face. The familiarity of him was what caused him to cautiously take his hand and give a firm shake.

"Shopping together and everything," James replied with a bland voice. He took back his hand from the man and rolled his gray eyes towards Lucy. "I haven't heard from you in a few weeks. I see you've been busy." He had comforted her, he hadn't been freaked by the loss of her hair, when she disappeared from his life for a few weeks he figured she was upset by what had happened. Instead, she was befriending this pissant.

Lucy frowned. Both of them were acting odd and she wasn't sure why. The tension between them almost felt as if it had a life of its own and it went far beyond this first introduction. Maybe Richard set off warning bells in James as well. She doubted James was going to be as willing to think nothing of them as she was.

She inserted herself between them, trying to put some sort of barrier up in hopes of diffusing whatever this situation was. She looked back at Richard before she addressed James, the confusion evident on her features.

"I met him at the costume shop when I went shopping. We were both having trouble finding a costume, so we helped each other. He was very nice." She wasn't sure why she felt she had to reassure him of that fact. It didn't really matter here, and she doubted he really cared. She needed to try to make this better for him though. The fact that he was so upset was upsetting her.

"I...I didn't know what to say to you," she said quietly, trying to keep this portion of the conversation between them. "Why are you so upset?"

Oh no. It wasn't going to be that easy. Provoking James was fun, and for some reason Richard was determined to get a rise out of the other man. It couldn't be what Lucy, as nice as she was, had in mind for a night out, but Richard didn't quite care. She was sweet and all, but he didn't even look at her as she stepped between the two of them. Why was it that suddenly his attention was so focused on this cheap vampire in tight pants?

Oh. Oh, well, when he put it that way. And that worked too. He could almost certainly get James angry if he played it from that angle.

Richard crossed his arms and listened as Lucy tried to smooth things over. Did she really think that he couldn't hear her? The club was crowded, yes, but not nearly that loud. "Yes, James, why are you so upset?" At the last word, he let his eyes linger obviously lower than James's face. When his eyes worked their ways back up to the other man's face Richard smiled in a way that could only be described as lascivious. Flirting this obvious was not anything he would try with a guy he actually had a chance of picking up, but it was perfect for getting a straight man to throw the first punch. And Lucy, bless her heart, would probably not even notice.

James' expression had begun to soften slightly as Lucy spoke to him. He seemed to calm while she was around but Richard's voice brought him back to attention and the angry gleam reappeared in his eye. Face snapping up, eyes narrowing, he glared at Richard for a long moment.

Finally he looked back from Lucy and took a step back. He gave a shake of his head and worked at his jaw for a moment longer before letting out a short breath. "Forget it," he replied, throwing up his hands in defeat. Ignoring Richard completely he gave Lucy a little bob of his head. "I'm glad you're feeling better. Hope you have a good time tonight...if you need anything, you know how to reach me. But I'm done for the night."

He glanced at Richard, giving him an icy glare before turning on his heel and taking a final swig of his beer before tossing it into a trash can with a breaking of glass. Quickly, he disappeared into the crowd, gone from sight of the couple he had left behind. He wanted to go home and nurse these strange feelings of disappointment he felt.

She stretched out her hand as if she was reaching to stop him but dropped it back to her side. The last thing she'd wanted was for him to be upset. She really had no idea why he was so upset. She felt like she'd failed for being unable to calm things down, but she hadn't had much help in that department, had she? She turned around and frowned at Richard, not at all happy with how that had gone.

"Why did you do that?" She had hoped the two of them would get along but obviously that was out of the question. She took a a decent swig of her drink, knowing she shouldn't but too upset not to.

"You didn't need to act like that. He's my friend. I was trying to fix things, why wouldn't you let me?"

Lucy's voice and glare of anger were both important, immediate things that needed to be attended to. He knew that, really. But it didn't stop him from watching James stalk off through the crowd, following the half-hearted vampire costume until it disappeared into a particularly thick clump of what looked like they might be X-Men. Really, what Richard wanted to do was follow him, maybe taunt him some more, but overall make him pay attention. Nobody got to ignore Richard, and especially not that guy.

It took an effort to look back at Lucy, even as angry as she was at the moment. It was a good look on her, he decided, though probably not best when directed at him.

"I did that," he said, tilting his head in the direction that James had gone, "because that guy was being horrible to you, and you're my date. You hadn't done anything wrong. And it was most definitely not your job to fix his bad attitude. We're sitting here, having fun, and he comes up like he's accusing you of, I don't know, killing puppies, or something. Who is he, anyway? Angry ex?" The question was far more interesting to him than it should be, he realized. He wasn't sure why he cared so much about what was essentially a non-confrontation, but for some reason he did.

Lucy looked back in the direction that James disappeared. Anger hadn't fit into her mental picture for how the night would go. She had been sure the two of them would get along. For some reason, her mind had connected the two of them. She had just naturally assumed that because of that connection, everything would go swimmingly.

She turned back to Richard and crossed her arms. "I told you, he's my friend. He's not my ex, but he is angry. I don't know why though. Maybe he's just having a bad night. You shouldn't have been so mean. I could have fixed it."

She wasn't sure she'd be able to do that now. She didn't like that idea.

Richard followed her gaze, glaring at the place where James had disappeared. The whole encounter felt unfinished, as if there was more to be said. It was uncomfortable, but he knew that to salvage any of the night he would have to let it go. For now. After all, he'd probably see James again. Something about him was immediately familiar, as if they had run in to each other recently before this event.

But now, he had to focus on Lucy. He hadn't meant to make her angry, and that, at least, was something he could try to fix. Before he answered her accusation he took a deep breath, almost sighing, and rubbed the side of his nose, collecting his thoughts. What did she want to hear?

"I... I have a hard time being nice to people who are mean to me. Or to my friends." He tried for a calm he didn't exactly feel, and shook his head. "I don't care how bad his night was, he didn't have any right to speak to you like that. But maybe I was out of line in how I responded. I'm sorry if it made you uncomfortable." That, at least, was honest. He wasn't sorry for anything he had done, but the way Lucy had reacted... that he was sorry for.

She felt this strong need to defend James. The way Richard was scolding him for his behavior irritated her. James was a good person. He had been nothing but exceedingly kind and thoughtful in regards to her. Richard had never met him before now, as far as she could tell, so he had no right to judge him.

"People don't mean what they say or how they sound when they are upset. He's a very nice person, don't judge him because of this. There's a lot more to him than what you just saw. But apology accepted."

Things felt different between them now. Everything had been pretty light-hearted and good spirited, but now she couldn't help but look at him more carefully. She immediately sided with James in this situation, whatever it may be, and felt herself feeling a little less at ease with him.

"I'm sorry for all of that." She was, too. She was very sorry that their relaxed evening had taken this sort of turn. She was sorry on James' behalf. She had a feeling James would never do it himself, so it was up to her if any apologizing was going to be done.

Richard literally bit his tongue, determined not to provoke her any further. Internally, he doubted very much whether James was a nice person. Lucy seemed the type to make excuses for people, or simply to overlook their transgressions in favor of believing the best of them. It was a dangerous stance, especially around someone who was ready to come to blows because of a casual date, but not one that Richard could talk her out of in one night.

"No need to apologize," he said, shaking his head. "None of that was your fault. Let's just put it behind us, yeah? No reason to let it ruin our night." From the look on her face, it might already be too late for that. Still, he wasn't about to give up the evening without a fight. The beer was good and he liked Lucy, even if he did feel a bit resentful for how far she was going to protect James. Who definitely didn't deserve it.

He was right. This was suppose to be fun. She just had to figure out how to get that back. She wasn't feeling very festive at the moment. She just felt tired. She wanted to go home, curl up in a ball and watch a ridiculous movie. Richard deserved better than that, though.

"You're right. We won't let it ruin the night. Everything will be just fine." She hoped. Maybe if she said it in her head enough, she'd believe it. Power of persuasion, right? Her dad was a big believer in that, so it must be true. She'd focus her energy on believing everything was fine, and it would be. They'd have a great time at the party and the night would be a success. She'd worry about James later.

She smiled at him and hoped it wasn't as tired as she felt. A tired smile wouldn't do much to lift morale.
