Lucy stared at the couple that Richard pointed out, completely baffled by their costumes. They looked like nerds combined with cats. It wasn't a combination she could explain. Just as she was about to come up with a story to explain why the cats were wearing ties, James approached.
Her entire face lit up and she stood, unable to help herself. Despite being completely unsure of where she stood with him, she couldn't help being thrilled to see him.
"Hi," she said hesitantly, tugging at the hem of her shirt. "This is my friend Richard. He helped me pick out my costume."
She turned back to Richard and gestured towards James. "Richard, this is James. He's a..."
What was he to her, exactly? A friend? A good friend? More than a friend? She hadn't tried to classify him before. He stood apart from everyone else she knew, and as a result she had no idea what to call him.
"He's a friend of mine." That was simple enough. It hardly encompassed everything he was to her, but it would have to do.
