Lucy frowned. Both of them were acting odd and she wasn't sure why. The tension between them almost felt as if it had a life of its own and it went far beyond this first introduction. Maybe Richard set off warning bells in James as well. She doubted James was going to be as willing to think nothing of them as she was.
She inserted herself between them, trying to put some sort of barrier up in hopes of diffusing whatever this situation was. She looked back at Richard before she addressed James, the confusion evident on her features.
"I met him at the costume shop when I went shopping. We were both having trouble finding a costume, so we helped each other. He was very nice." She wasn't sure why she felt she had to reassure him of that fact. It didn't really matter here, and she doubted he really cared. She needed to try to make this better for him though. The fact that he was so upset was upsetting her.
"I...I didn't know what to say to you," she said quietly, trying to keep this portion of the conversation between them. "Why are you so upset?"
