327 - Flood Event Mingle
[ Perhaps you're a really strong swimmer. Perhaps you've found a canoe to paddle around in, unhooked a door to recreate the ending of Titanic. Perhaps breathing isn't a necessity for you. Perhaps you're already doomed to drown. Whichever your situation, there's one thing for certain.

The rain isn't stopping. ]

I guess that depends on what kind of experiment we're in. [Brave talk, but she really doesn't like the thought of drowning anymore than he's likely to.]

I thought I was going to die once. I mean, I'm in dangerous situations all the time, but one time someone from the future said it was going to happen. That made it sound a lot more likely.

May I assume that they were wrong and you didn't die? [It's not the kind of assumption that a person can just make, what with death being selectively permanent in more than a couple of universes.]

[Nodding.] I was going deep undercover. My death was faked. I just didn't know that for about a month because they didn't know. [They lied to almost everyone.]

What a thing to be misinformed about. I think that the anticipation of dying is worst, almost, than the actual dying. [Which he feels he can say with some authority, having tried both the anticipating and the dying.]

Probably. The fear of something you can't do anything about is usually harder than just working through something once it's happened or happening. Like trying to keep a lie to protect yourself being more stressful than just fessing up to the truth. [That one she has experience with.]

Personal experience?

Some, yes. I nearly drowned inside of a flooding room years ago; it was very slow, and there was nothing to do but wait to see if anyone would notice that I needed to be saved.

You were being far too specific to not be speaking from experience.

Wow, so today is just one giant traumatic experience recreation for you.

[Gives him a, "That's rough, buddy" look.]

Which time? With the lying?

This dome is much larger than my dorm room was.

[It's fine. It's not like his girlfriend turned into the moon or anything.]

Yes, that time. It must have been an important lie.

[Larger, but still taking on water really fast with no where for it to go, but she nods. It's not like she wants him to feel worse about it.]

It seemed like it at the time.

[Happily, Chekov withstands stress far more gracefully than some people with this face.]

And in retrospect?

No one cared about what I was hiding. They were just upset I was lying to them.

They forgave you, I hope, for keeping that secret from them.

How well do you swim?

They did. I'm not sure how long it took. I don't remember how it went down since it happened slightly in my future if that makes any sense.

I'm a strong athlete. I don't do a ton of swimming in Gotham.

No, no—that makes more sense than it would in a more strictly linear situation.

Would you be able to swim well enough, possibly, to test this raft's seaworthiness? Preferably without drowning in the unlikely event that it would break into pieces in the water.

Sure. [But sure looks at him curiously.] Does that mean you can't swim?

I can't swim well. It is not a popular activity in Russia or in space.

Then at least you're motivated for these to work. [Maybe you should grab some floaties, dude.]

You would doubt that saving others was motivation enough for me? I'm hurt. [He's not really, and he's absolutely not wearing floaties. Never in all of Russian history has a grown man worn floaties, and that is not a tradition that he cares to break away from.]

I will try harder to come across as an altruistic individual.

Now, would you like to test this raft, or are you prepared to cope with the guilt you will experience if I test it and drown doing so?

Yeah, yeah, I'm testing. Let's get it on the water. [Reaching down to get a hold on it.]
