[Her heart hurts for him. He's been such a good friend to her and she knows how devastating it is to lose someone. Him lying here with her body...it's too much, but she also can't do anything about it. She's not about to suggest moving her away.]

Can I get you anything? [She guesses the answer before she asks. She can't imagine he'd eat even if she brought him food. At this point there are no dry blankets and even if she brought it, it wouldn't be dry long. She can't do what he needs. She can't bring Chuck back or give him time to deal.

She eyes the table instead, trying to determine for herself if she thinks he's safe on it.]

Kitty, I can't... [He chokes off, not even sure what he was going to say to begin with. Can't talk to her right now? Can't accept that this is happening? Can't keep it together much longer if she stays? It's easier to lock everything away when he's on his own but having someone here just opens it all back up again, makes it suddenly dangerously close and real like sharks circling. He's going to lose it if she stays. Or maybe if she goes. He doesn't know anymore.]

[The hand is too busy hanging on to the table for him to squeeze back but he appreciates it. He has to shut his eye, take a deep breath, choke down the emotions threatening to strangle it because he's not falling apart until tomorrow. Not until he knows. Really healthy, sure. It reminds him of the way Donos stayed functional and piloting after losing his squadron until his astromech droid was destroyed. The last member of Talon squadron. The only one he could save. Once that last little bit of hope and responsibility was gone he just turned off, stuck motionless in a hospital bed with Phanan lying about his medical condition, there and gone all at once. Sounds like kind of a nice option, frankly.]

[When her parents died she was on the run, homeless and scared and had to keep moving to survive. When her students died they still had a world to save...by destroying it. She shook off Rogue's comfort by phasing when the other woman tried to show her sympathy. When Reid left, she restructured the Defense Force. Anything to be doing and active and productive and not thinking about it. Not feeling everything that was ready to drag her down. She was waiting and she waited until the first day newbies returned and she listened and watched for him but he didn't show himself and she crumbled. That was Day 262. She's only starting to put herself back together 65 days later. She went through days when she wished she could just go back home even if it meant dying moments later. It just felt like where she belonged. Maybe the only place she belonged. So many times the thought of giving up felt better than the struggle. She's on the other side of that now, but she doesn't want any of that for Ton.]

She's alive. She's in that pod and she's safe. And if they don't bring her back I swear to you we'll find a way to do it ourselves.

[She gives his hand a squeeze as much as she can without dislodging it from the table. She wouldn't be able to save them both if they went under now, and she doesn't want him seeing Chuck slip away like that.

She wants to ask what happened, but she doesn't. The end of the story is more important than the beginning and middle right now.]

Yes I am. [Very quiet. Until she gets back. If she gets back. Kriff he can't think about either of those possibilities right now. Just like he can't stop looking at her, noticing very little difference between life and death on her face. She's the most vibrant, alive person he's ever met, and no matter how casually she can talk about being dead this time she really is.]

[She can understand that too, but it doesn't stop her heart from hurting for him. For all the great friendship and support thrown her way with Reid, there were times—more times than there weren't—where she felt alone too. And she didn't have to do this. She didn't have to hold his lifeless body knowing she couldn't save him.]

I know it doesn't feel like it, but you're going to get through this. I'll do anything I can.

[She means it. Believes it. But she knows it's not that helpful and he wouldn't be wrong to say she was running out of things to say and do, but walking away is harder. Leaving him alone feels wrong.]

The island is probably already under water. We took some of the shelters and put them over rafts. It's...drier. [Softly.] I could get you to one. [What she doesn't say—what she expects to be a non-negotiable—is that she doesn't have the strength left to move two people when one of them is dead weight. That would be a struggle under good conditions. These conditions are very far from good.]

You're part metal and you have to keep you and her balanced on a table while you move through a debris field. Wear it. [Pulling it off and handing it over.] I'll do what I can about clearing the path. [It's exactly because she doesn't think he's concerned that she wants him wearing it. If she goes under she's going to fight like hell to get back up. She doubts that's true of him and she doesn't want to lose him.]

[She tenses, watching the display before her, considering trying to stop him, but it seemed like the activity was contained away from others. And then there was a large boat with enclosed areas. Some place that would really be dry. Well, no more than damp. It wasn't sinking...yet?] Let's check it out. [She knows Ton wouldn't be in the exploring mood. She's not really either, but if she can get them inside then she won't have to worry about him slipping into the water. She hopes. Some days you just have to put your faith in the mysterious, magically appearing ship.]

[Alright, it's weird, and so is the fact that they start levitating up to the boat. That's definitely weird. Normal everyday Phanan would be having a field day with this. Instead he just hangs on until suddenly they're laying one the deck, or whatever it is considering it seems to be made out of buildings. Even the table is still here but he doesn't move to let go of it. Maybe it's shock or the fact that he's too far gone past anything to care, to think about letting go or getting somewhere dry and out of the rain. He's shivering frantically after so long in the water and still clinging to Chuck and the kriffing table that got her stuck in the first place.]

[She did not expect the levitation. She tenses as he manages to ensnare her even in her phased form. Magic is the worst sometimes. Still, it's taking her exactly where she intended the three of them to go and it's a lot easier than trying to climb aboard. She tries to take in the surroundings. Rain is still coming down on them out on the makeshift deck, but she gets to her feet and phases her head into the structure on top. It's dark inside, but it's also dry. Well, damp, but there's no rain. Maybe she could even find blankets? That might be too much to hope for as she rubs her arms and heads back to Ton.]

Can you pick her up? It's dry inside there.
