Day 221 — Morning mingle : Main shelter
[Wake up and smell the lack of coffee. You're on a bunk bed. Maybe you're a top and maybe you're a bottom. There are five other people in your room. Maybe they're friends or enemies or faces you barely recognize if at all. It doesn't matter much. You can leave this room and you don't need to come back to it.

You should get your rations though. You're probably hungry. You're definitely a little sluggish of body. What happened to that bruise you got sparing yesterday? What happened to your newly dyed hair? Mystery, mystery... Move along. Find the public bathrooms and do your business with a hundred of your closest friends.

Find the kiosk and get your rations. Careful not to let anyone steal them. You won't get more until tomorrow and the bots won't care. They aren't here to hold your hand. If you get sick or hurt and they deem it necessary they will take you to the hospital whether you wish it or not. But why dwell on such things? You're here now and you might as well enjoy it. You even get a free day today.]

(OOC: OOC info. This mingle takes place in the Main shelter over the morning hours.

It's not until mid-afternoon that Nikola finally runs into Helen, and it's utterly aggravating that it took him this long to locate her, though not for lack of trying. This compound is new, unfamiliar, and without the use of heightened Abnormal abilities... well, even Johnny would have a hell of a time cornering her. Luckily for him, the universe has decided to cut him some slack as he rounds a corner, nearly colliding with the woman in question.

He catches her by the shoulders to steady them both from the near impact, clucks his tongue at her. "Klutz."

She certainly isn't expecting to run into anyone and her hands reach up to grasp his arms to hold onto so he doesn't knock them over. Of course he would blame it on her. She would expect nothing less.

"Good afternoon to you, too," she responds, ignoring the implications of what he's saying. "Elena said she ran into you in the rations line. How are you feeling?" It's a mixed bag of comments, though the way she says it would merely suggest to an outsider that she thinks he might be ill. He should know she's asking about his vampirism. How badly are his "abilities" repressed and how is that affecting him?

There's also the tiny inquiry as to whether or not Elena knows his secret.

"Quite sated, despite the poor quality," is the answer he provides her with, knowing fully well that she'll understand what he means by that — along with this. "But if you're offering something with a bit more flavor, I wouldn't say no."

Nikola suspects he knows what she's asking in the underlying and unsaid, but opts not to address it.

She eyes him for a moment as she lets silence permeate the air in the wake of his words. There are so many things she could say to that.

"Only if you really need it. I might be able to spare something that fits your taste."

They both know well that she'll force him to feed if she has to, but only as a last resort. It's much easier for him to deal and feed on what's available than be force-fed from a still-living human.

He flashes her a grin, the kind that often serves as a prelude for more witty, inappropriate banter, but the notion of continuing along that train of thought is banished almost as soon as it's indulged.

"If you must know, yes. Clever girl, that one. I suspect she knows a lot more about our particular line of work than she lets on."

Or rather, Helen's line of work. Nikola was more of a consultant that got paid in wine.

She's fully expecting something along their normal line of witty banter and finds herself almost disappointed when a quip doesn't follow. That grin of his usually means terrible things are following and it's got her guard up -- in the way that it usually is around him, which is quite different from the guard she has around anyone else.

"Ah... Interesting. I may have to keep a closer eye on her in that case." She's curious about what Elena does know, especially if Nikola thinks it's along the lines of her work. "I've met quite a few fascinating people in my three days here and she's certainly one of them."

Those quips don't follow, because Nikola isn't in the mood to be so lighthearted. No, he's gone from what was practically a resort and not minding so much being there, to being shoved into a place where people are expected to cohabit in close quarters without means of proper privacy, which crosses all sorts of lines and boundaries he is very much not okay with. Being uprooted once was tolerable — this is not. And that mind of his is already working on doing something about it.

"You do that," he says, seeming almost distracted by something else entirely.

She would have commented on his lack of quipping at her if she hadn't noticed how distracted he's looking. Knowing him as well as she does, she's well aware that this means something is up. His mind is somewhere else and that can't bode well.

"Nikola..."

She draws out his name on a warning, knowing full well that a distracted Nikola means trouble for her.

"We worked with less in our day," he finds himself saying, already taking a mental inventory of the available materials — which aren't much. "Surely I can MacGyver something."

He could be commenting on any number of things at the moment, and though she has a feeling she knows what this is about, she wants to hear it from him first. "What are you planning?" she asks with the air of someone who knows her partner is up to something and it's most likely not good.

"Nothing you need to concern yourself with," Nikola answered ambiguously, taking hold of her elbow with the intention of pulling her along with him as he headed off in the direction of the dormitories. "Besides, there's no — and this stays between us — guarantee that I'd be able to do anything about our current situation. As in do. If I were running on full battery, so to speak, that wouldn't be a problem. Without... Well, as brilliant as I am, I can't exactly fashion something out of lettuce, clothes, and toothpaste. Nothing that will do enough damage, any way."

The trouble with him telling her she needn't concern herself with whatever he was contemplating was that it meant she needed to concern herself with it even more. She stiffened almost imperceptibly, enough that someone who knew her would be able to tell that she didn't like being steered around, but she allowed him to guide her around.

His words had a point to them and she would recognize that, but even the fact that he's considering that at all is worthy of her concern. At the moment, she was considering it as well, though she didn't quite see how anything was possible without potentially blowing something up and, despite the words she'd entered the last dome with, she wasn't in the mood to have the deaths of innocent people on her conscience here.

"You do realize you're giving me more to concern myself with, don't you?" she asked quietly, pointedly ignoring the comments about his "battery" being drained. She knew what he meant, understood that his abilities had been dampened as Rebekah's had, and understood that it was seriously hampering his ability to exist, let alone his comfort in doing so. Even so, considering doing damage at all before every option had been combed over and the pros and cons weighed carefully didn't sit well with her. This entire place made her nerves hum.
