200 — Anniversary Festival!

Happy Anniversary, Marina Nova!

The bots have been busy cleaning up the dome and setting up decorations for this momentous occasion, and by now there isn't a nook or cranny left un-pimped! Bright blue MarinaNova flags wave happily in the artificial breeze together with the colorful ribbons that have been wrapped around poles. The streets are illuminated by strings of lights and paper lanterns and each sector gate has been lovingly decorated with fragrant flower garlands.

Of course, that is far from all! There wouldn't be much of a festival without entertainment and your loving wardens have made absolutely sure that there's something for everyone!

Sector 0 Fairground: If you want to go faster, you have to scream louder! Sector 0 has been taken over by a fairground where you can find such old classics as the bumper cars, a haunted house of mirrors, a more romantic tunnel of love, a roller coaster, a classic merry-go-round and, of course, a ferris wheel.

Game Booths: Step right up! Test your skill and win a prize! Throughout the dome there's a variety of game booths, ranging from the classic ring toss and high striker to kissing booths and dunk tanks. There's also a duck pond game, balloon darts and goldfish scooping game — with mechanical goldfish, of course!

The prizes are all of the carnival variety, including but not limited to: stuffed animals, fake tattoos, cheap bracelets and necklaces, stickers, rubber reptiles, silly hats, wiggle snakes and sticky hands or other sticky things.

Performances: The other way to show your skill! There are two stages set up in the dome: the first one with sound equipment and instruments suitable for a musical performance — or perhaps just karaoke! If no one is using the stage, it will automatically play randomly selected music from a wide variety of genres. The second stage is set up to accommodate physical performances like gymnastics and when no one is performing you're treated to a projection of ball room dancers, gymnasts, modern dance, ballet and similar things!

There are also street performers scattered throughout the dome. You can watch robots juggle, eat fire, swallow swords or charm robot snakes! There's also face painting and the occasional robot dressed up as a human statue for your amusement.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. You can find classic carnival food like popcorn, cotton candy, corn dogs, funnel cakes and pizza slices, but also takoyaki, okonomiyaki, candied almonds, gyros, pirogues, egg rolls and of course snow cones and ice-cream cones. The theme has of course extended to the drink selection and you're welcome to quench your thirst with lemon shake ups, butterbeer, mead and malted milkshakes.

Enjoy!

[Secret identities could be more trouble than they were worth, especially in a small population. Not that Duo didn't understand the need for one. He'd pulled off undercover stuff a few times himself.]

Lessons or just natural knack?

[He understands the need for a secret ID, though. And by this point it's habit to keep it up, even if there's really no way to protect it.]

A little of both. I've been doing this as long as I can remember.

I've got a friend like that back home. He's really good at it, too. Even got into a circus.

[Duo had no idea just how close he might be to treading on bad memories at the moment.]

[On the contrary, it doesn't bother him. Actually, it makes him curious.]

What did he perform as?

He did mostly acrobatics, but he had an affinity with the animals, so they had him do stuff there, and then he got the joy of being a target for one of their knife throwers. Lucky for him, she was really good at it.

The circus biz sounds like a dangerous job.

[And he misses it a little.]

I guess. In comparison, it was probably just another everyday thing for him.

Funny how easy it is to get used to doing life-threatening stunts, no matter your job.

That is true...

[Duo's tone was heavier than his expression, indicating he knew a little bit about that. Not in the performance sense, either.]

Suddenly, putting yourself at risk doesn't feel like such a risk anymore.

[Well there goes the light tone of the conversation.]

Yeah. Sometimes I wonder if I should be worried, that I can just jump into the line of fire so easily.

Same here.

[Duo shrugged a little, almost like the conversation never got dark... very nonchalant.]

I guess it's not so terrible. I mean, as long as we come out of it in one piece.

Yeah. And I've been trained well. So I just trust in that, and I get out of trouble in one piece.

[But he misses his mentor. A lot. He always felt so much better when Bruce had his back.]

[Duo nodded with a small smile.]

It helps, for sure.

And no small amount of luck...

[He laughed a bit.]

So, hey... you tried any of the games, yet?

[Oh good. Subject change.]

Yeah, I played a round of balloon darts, but not much else.

Well, there's the ping pong ball in the goldfish bowl. Up for a contest?

[Duo didn't mind challenging people.]

Sure. What're the stakes?

Well, there's the normal stuff... keep the prize if you land in the bowl with one. Though, I think those goldfish in there are fake. It's not like it's the pet café or something where you gotta apply.

Anyway, for ourselves, lessee...

Empty bowls are clearly losers. So, I say, we do each other's chores for the day, or maid or butler. Whatever you wanna call it.

Bowls with the little prizes are like second place. So, second place gets out of a day of chores, but still hasta make a meal or something for the winner.

And obviously, the goldfish is the prize, and well, the winner gets the treats, so to speak.
