200 — Anniversary Festival!

Happy Anniversary, Marina Nova!

The bots have been busy cleaning up the dome and setting up decorations for this momentous occasion, and by now there isn't a nook or cranny left un-pimped! Bright blue MarinaNova flags wave happily in the artificial breeze together with the colorful ribbons that have been wrapped around poles. The streets are illuminated by strings of lights and paper lanterns and each sector gate has been lovingly decorated with fragrant flower garlands.

Of course, that is far from all! There wouldn't be much of a festival without entertainment and your loving wardens have made absolutely sure that there's something for everyone!

Sector 0 Fairground: If you want to go faster, you have to scream louder! Sector 0 has been taken over by a fairground where you can find such old classics as the bumper cars, a haunted house of mirrors, a more romantic tunnel of love, a roller coaster, a classic merry-go-round and, of course, a ferris wheel.

Game Booths: Step right up! Test your skill and win a prize! Throughout the dome there's a variety of game booths, ranging from the classic ring toss and high striker to kissing booths and dunk tanks. There's also a duck pond game, balloon darts and goldfish scooping game — with mechanical goldfish, of course!

The prizes are all of the carnival variety, including but not limited to: stuffed animals, fake tattoos, cheap bracelets and necklaces, stickers, rubber reptiles, silly hats, wiggle snakes and sticky hands or other sticky things.

Performances: The other way to show your skill! There are two stages set up in the dome: the first one with sound equipment and instruments suitable for a musical performance — or perhaps just karaoke! If no one is using the stage, it will automatically play randomly selected music from a wide variety of genres. The second stage is set up to accommodate physical performances like gymnastics and when no one is performing you're treated to a projection of ball room dancers, gymnasts, modern dance, ballet and similar things!

There are also street performers scattered throughout the dome. You can watch robots juggle, eat fire, swallow swords or charm robot snakes! There's also face painting and the occasional robot dressed up as a human statue for your amusement.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. You can find classic carnival food like popcorn, cotton candy, corn dogs, funnel cakes and pizza slices, but also takoyaki, okonomiyaki, candied almonds, gyros, pirogues, egg rolls and of course snow cones and ice-cream cones. The theme has of course extended to the drink selection and you're welcome to quench your thirst with lemon shake ups, butterbeer, mead and malted milkshakes.

Enjoy!

I haven't had much chance to look around as yet. The Ferris wheel looked interesting, however. Have you been on one?

Oh yeah, I used to go every summer when I was still livin' at home. There was this travelin' carneval that used t' stop by... smaller than this an' definitely rattier, but it was still a lot of fun.

[She smiles as he recounts the memory, thinking of what he'd said about his father. Such a different childhood from Helix -- it's no wonder they connect so well.] Then I defer to your experience. What were your favorite things to do?

Oh, uhm... th' roller-coaster was always a lot of fun. Most of th' time we'd just drift 'round though, us kids. Play games or eat too much junk food.

That was th' best part, really. Just bein' with my friends an' do whatever we felt like doin'.

It sounds wonderful. I must admit, I'm envious. [Her childhood involved military hangars and performances and peace-keeping missions. Not that she didn't love and believe in what she did, but there are experiences she feels she missed in the process.]

[ It's bitter-sweet, hearing that. Familiar, too. Helix didn't have any of this either and ever since they met, Aidan's been determined to give the blue boy everything he missed out on. ]

It ain't too late, y'know. You're here right now, at a festival, surrounded by games an' rides an' junk food an' friends. Everythin' you need!

Of course, it's never too late to experience such things. And I'm very glad to do so with a friend like you.

[ He grins, practically beaming. All too happy to be of service! ] Alright, since you're th' one who needs to catch up... where do you want to go first?

[She glances about, her eyes passing over the scene with genuine wonder and enthusiasm.] Wherever you deem is the most memorable carnival experience. I trust your judgment in this, and all things.

[ If he wasn't already smiling like an idiot, he would be doing so now. There's something warmer creeping into his expression though, as he ponders on the best way to do this. ]

You need to go on at least one ride. Before you eat cause that could be... really bad, even if eatin' a lot of crap is super-important too.

My stomach is well used to spacecraft launches and zero-gravity, I should hope these rides aren't so bad as that. But nevertheless, it's sound advice.

[She glances around, searching for the biggest baddest ride out there. If that's the place to start, then that's where she'll be.] Which one first?

[ He grins some at that, a touch sheepish. Of course she's used to tougher things and these rides are nowhere near the stress of a spacecraft launch. Still, a word of caution is never a bad thing. ]

Well, if you wanna start with a bang... 's gotta be th' rollercoaster. Ain't nothin' better than that.

[She lights up with a girlish smile.] I've heard of those! They sound very exciting. [Reaching back to tie her long hair into an elegant knot, she makes ready to follow Aidan's lead.] I wonder if it will be very much like the space travel simulators back home.

[ He waits until she's ready before setting off for the roller-coaster, a bounce in his step. ]

Y'know, I've never been on one of those... space travel simulators, I mean. I ain't even sure if we had any, aside from th' military stations.

They're not too common among civilians where I'm from, either. But because of my father's position, I spent a great deal of time in military installations.

I'll be sure and let you know how the experience compares. I'm sure the roller coaster will be exciting in its own way! I'm imagining steep drops and corkscrew turns -- is that right?

Yeah, somethin' like that! Some are worse an' some are more friendly... I think this one's somewhere in th' middle though, so it should be a lot of fun!

Then it's perfect! [Lacus' enthusiasm, it's a formidable force.]

I do wish I could show you one of our simulators, for the sake of comparison. Perhaps if Rebecca and I get the virtual reality simulators up and running again.

Mm, I quite agree. Our project was never intended to substitute for true and real experiences, but rather to present a taste of things we lack the ability to try while here.

A small bit of freedom, true, but the best our abilities can provide for, thus far.

I guess that makes sense. Still... I don't know, it seems kinda dangerous. Like, with that machine I'd be able to go home, right? Kinda?

I don't know if I'd ever want to go back if I could do that.

It's certainly not something that would comfort everyone. If there were something that you think would do so, I would gladly do everything in my power to make it available.

[ He's quiet for a beat. Thinking. ] Y'know... I don't think somethin' like that exists. There ain't no pleasin' everyone at th' same time. We're all different, with different needs an' just cause somethin' ain't for me, that don't mean no one else can enjoy it.

[A smile; she knew he'd think that way. Aidan is considerate and thoughtful, always.] As you say.

But if there were anything I could do for your comfort, specifically, I would. [That's something of a question.]
