200 — Anniversary Festival!

Happy Anniversary, Marina Nova!

The bots have been busy cleaning up the dome and setting up decorations for this momentous occasion, and by now there isn't a nook or cranny left un-pimped! Bright blue MarinaNova flags wave happily in the artificial breeze together with the colorful ribbons that have been wrapped around poles. The streets are illuminated by strings of lights and paper lanterns and each sector gate has been lovingly decorated with fragrant flower garlands.

Of course, that is far from all! There wouldn't be much of a festival without entertainment and your loving wardens have made absolutely sure that there's something for everyone!

Sector 0 Fairground: If you want to go faster, you have to scream louder! Sector 0 has been taken over by a fairground where you can find such old classics as the bumper cars, a haunted house of mirrors, a more romantic tunnel of love, a roller coaster, a classic merry-go-round and, of course, a ferris wheel.

Game Booths: Step right up! Test your skill and win a prize! Throughout the dome there's a variety of game booths, ranging from the classic ring toss and high striker to kissing booths and dunk tanks. There's also a duck pond game, balloon darts and goldfish scooping game — with mechanical goldfish, of course!

The prizes are all of the carnival variety, including but not limited to: stuffed animals, fake tattoos, cheap bracelets and necklaces, stickers, rubber reptiles, silly hats, wiggle snakes and sticky hands or other sticky things.

Performances: The other way to show your skill! There are two stages set up in the dome: the first one with sound equipment and instruments suitable for a musical performance — or perhaps just karaoke! If no one is using the stage, it will automatically play randomly selected music from a wide variety of genres. The second stage is set up to accommodate physical performances like gymnastics and when no one is performing you're treated to a projection of ball room dancers, gymnasts, modern dance, ballet and similar things!

There are also street performers scattered throughout the dome. You can watch robots juggle, eat fire, swallow swords or charm robot snakes! There's also face painting and the occasional robot dressed up as a human statue for your amusement.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. You can find classic carnival food like popcorn, cotton candy, corn dogs, funnel cakes and pizza slices, but also takoyaki, okonomiyaki, candied almonds, gyros, pirogues, egg rolls and of course snow cones and ice-cream cones. The theme has of course extended to the drink selection and you're welcome to quench your thirst with lemon shake ups, butterbeer, mead and malted milkshakes.

Enjoy!

[She looks up from where she's picking out what toysshe'll keep will be going to whomever, no small amount of surprise evident in her eyes before she tries for distanced, careful, impassiveness. It's only natural, though-- she's always been the one initiate any conversation with this girl, and Saya has never seemed to want anything to do with her]

...Hello. Have you been well since-- then? [Her brow knits as she fumbles, breaking the brief facade of indifference and leaving her absolute sincerity clear as day, and she continues quickly] I've heard that that song can leave headaches for a day or two afterwards with some people, but I hope that wasn't the case with you.

[The break in aloofness is surprising, and it shows. But Saya recovers quickly; Hei is focused, but she well knows that he wouldn't care for someone who is entirely cold. And Hei is why she's here, after all.]

No, I didn't notice anything. I mean, it would be a small price to pay. [She'd been far more focused on her actions than the spell Tear used to stop her.] I wanted to thank you, by the way.

And... I wanted to maybe talk to you. About Hei. [She uses his real name not only because he'd implied that Tear knew, but so that they'll both be on the same level, here.]

[At first her mouth merely pulls down into a slight frown, when it seems as if Saya is diminishing herself, but she still gives a small nod at the intent of thanks... before her expression reverts back to distanced at the mention of Hei, complete this time and without any breaks in it.

Turning her head a bit to the side perplexed, she still keeps her eyes on Saya intently, taking a silent moment to judge this; clearly curious about what she has to say on that particular topic, but incredibly wary about it all the same]

What... about him?

[Too late, Saya questions her wisdom in pursuing this. She and Tear don't, have never, had the sort of relationship where tensions are low enough to drop all pretense of hostility. She's feeling the results and regret of all that posturing now.]

[But this is for Hei, the man who gives her everything. And beyond that, it's the right thing. Saya puts her hands behind her back so her blue wristband, the match of Hei's, isn't visible.]

I know how it feels when he hides things. [Saya's gotten used to it, and has no right to throw stones, but that doesn't mean she likes it.] I don't even think he wants to, sometimes, but it's... habit, maybe.

He wouldn't have told you the truth if he didn't like you. And trust you.

[It takes everything she has not to snort at the girl, but it's clear enough in her expression that gets chillier by the minute. Tear's not sure if she should be more offended at Saya now acting like she understands her when not that long ago the other girl rebuffed her when she tried just the same, or Saya talking like she has all the whole, right situation]

And he wouldn't have told me the truth if I hadn't found him to be lying to me in the first place, either. [Her tone is light and caustic, but it's not just hurt and bitterness coming out here, it's the truth. It'd been fairly clear when they had talked that he never had had any intention of telling her anything, that he would have been content to keep everything wrapped up for as long as absolutely possible]

So, I'm pretty sure that invalidates those two reasons...

[Saya shakes her head slowly, but with certainty.] It doesn't.

[She's always been reluctant to share herself with Tear, suspicion having colored their interactions. Only now can Saya admit it was her own kneejerk sensitivity that skewed her viewpoint.]

[But regardless, she needs to do this for Hei. So he won't be alone when she's gone.]

I don't tell people what I am all the time. I'm afraid they won't get to know me, or will be scared of me. I don't set out to lie, I just don't know who I can trust when I first meet them. But by the time I trust them, I'm even more afraid of them hating me and it just gets harder and harder to tell them.

He made a mistake, and he tried to correct it. Can you honestly say it's unforgivable?

I never said it was. [Sharp but still controlled, as she balls her hands into fists and crosses her arms tightly, her tension about this topic finally bleeding out into her body language. Unforgivable? It could be, and to some in the same situation as her it would be. But she had never hinted at what she considered him before finding out nor acted on it, so those... particular feelings can't influence anything. She can only feel and hold him accountable as someone who'd been lied to for a long time-- and that's a stance she knows unfortunately well]

But do you think two of us should be fine right away? After someone who had been given my trust, had been confided in, had-- had seen me at my most vulnerable... still continued his act, with no intention of telling the truth despite the many chances to open up? And left me wondering if he'd have ever said anything if I hadn't found out myself?

He stepped on everything I gave him. Even if he does try to fix things, how can I be expected to really believe it? ...Especially when you're here doing this.

[Anger flickers in her eyes, close to the surface. Saya knows who he is, and hearing him disparaged isn't well taken. Still, she maintains a more or less even tone, because it's not for her own sake that she's here.]

He could have shrugged you off when you found out and reacted like this, if he was so cruel and callous as your words. He didn't. Because you mean something to him and I think he means something to you. You wouldn't be so upset in the first place if you didn't see that side of him at all.

What I'm here doing is looking past my own problems with you in order to keep someone important to me from suffering. It would be easier for me to let you and he grow apart, wouldn't it? [But she's not. It was never even a thought. She bows her head to hide the wetness in her eyes.] He didn't ask this from me, he would never, and I think you know that.

[A spark of indignation fires up at Saya's insinuation-- assessment, but just as quickly it rushes out of her, her tense fingers easing out for a second before kneading into the cloth of her sleeves, her mouth drawn into a thin line as she casts her eyes away, not out of anger or even to hold back a sharp retort, though. Hesitation, uncertainty, consideration are now at the forefront of her expression.

Because she does know, deep down. The truth in Saya's words about the feelings that were smothered just after she had realized them, that are still very much there-- maybe not as much as, or maybe different than, before-- even if she wishes they weren't. She does know that the part of him she's certain she saw for real wouldn't do this, he'd try himself or accept the result. This is Saya's venture alone.

But even knowing all this, and being so tired of the distrust born from the lies of the people she's built her life around, that same wariness keeps her from moving past it, because if she does, it'll happen again. It's like mud, sticking and pulling, weighing you down as you try to climb out of it. She wants to be unburdened, and though she has reached the point where she's no longer brushing him off, it's too soon to be even close to how things were before.

Shifting her weight slightly, she continues to keep her sight off Saya during the long, empty pause and even when she does finally speak; her voice low, and more than a little raw]

And how would you be keeping him from suffering, exactly?

[Not agreeing to anything that's been said, just willing to hear Saya out. They've thrown words at each other, but haven't yet breached what the other girl actually wants from her, she feels. Forgive and be fine with each other? That can't be just all. And, really why...]

[Saya dials her anger down to a low simmer, though not without effort. It's difficult to remember, with Hei's disappointment so sharp in her mind, that Tear has every right to be angry and upset with him. But she manages, and it keeps her tongue civil.]

All I'm asking is to give him a chance. [It seems such a little thing to say, though Saya knows it's anything but. It was chance that she's still alive, and everything was very nearly ruined because of it.]

[That hasn't answered Tear's question explicitly, of course. Saya isn't sure she could speak the truth of it aloud.]

[Saya's answer doesn't really answer much of anything, and her brow furrows faintly in irritation and doubt. Considering the reason for the rift between her and Hei, dancing around the subject surely isn't going to garner Saya any favor]

...We've spoken a few times since. Today.

["Civilly and without any incident" goes unsaid, but is still apparent in the almost defensive tone and body language she takes for a moment as she glances up finally. If that's all Saya wants from her, she's already started an effort for it on her own. That, at least in her mind, merits a completely straight answer, and she sets an underlying hardness in her recomposed voice, that makes it clear that a murky reply like before isn't acceptable]

Why does it matter so much? You said yourself it'd be easier for he and I to hate each other, so-- why aren't you taking the easy way? [Why hasn't she been? She was practically hell-bent on dying before... but suddenly has a reason to live? What's changed?]

[While Saya is willing to concede Hei, in a sense, Tear isn't entitled to more than that. This gesture, broad-reaching though it might seem, has a limited scope; the chasm that separated them until now is still just as wide and deep, only instead of the unstable go-between of the Chevalier now there's something of an actual bridge. But in Saya's mind, that bridge isn't hers to cross.]

Good. [And she means it, which keeps her from any reaction to that tone that would otherwise invoke every instinct of self-protection. There's a finality to the word, a hushed closure. That's all she wanted, and the rest...]

[A sigh, small but visible. Behind her back, she fingers the blue band on her wrist.]
Because he deserves someone.

[The temptation is there to walk off as in Saya's mind the discussion should be neatly tied off. But she can sense it still flowing against her will, constricted but not closed. And so she stands, feet barely held to ground.]

[She scoffs loudly before she can stop herself, and brings a hand up to rake it through the length of her hair in clear gesture of exasperation. Her offense and temper are simmering closer and closer the surface, and she's battling with walking away right now herself. The more Saya refuses to give any real answer to what she wants to know, the more a small, petty part of her feels less and less like having anything to do with what the girl wants.

But she won't give into that part, or her anger, though it is ultimately due to her own self standards and not out of respect for Saya or her wishes. Silently she fiddles with a strand of hair while gathering her composure, exhaling and trying to push down all the indignation and sharp attitude at the same time, leaving her mostly with just a weariness over this entire conversation. Asking any more is clearly pointless, much as it bothers her, but there's still one thing what needs to be addressed before this is done]

...He has you.

[Those few words ring of sincerity, there's no doubt in her muted expression at all. She felt the concern coming off Hei in waves when he intervened that night, saw the care as he gathered Saya up and took her home. Though she definitely has her own problems with Saya, she's also certain that he, at least, is a part of their license because of affection, or more-- that he already has someone in her]

Not for long.

[If Tear wanted honesty, there is is, stark and sullen and brutal. The strange time mechanism here is a constant tug at her and it might be a few weeks only before her Long Sleep is upon her. When Hei's promise comes due.]

[Seasoned killer though Saya knows him to be, she can't bear the thought of him returning to an empty apartment to was his knife of her blood. He may bear it as he does all things but she will not.]

[Saya's posture and tone has become rigid, painfully so, without her realizing. Conscious effort lets her relax by slow degrees before speaking again.]

Please, think about it. [She turns, having no desire to discuss with Tear her own inevitable end. That is between Saya and those few she trusts.]

[Her head quirks in reaction to those cryptic words, and she immediately turns over the possible meaning in them, only having her poor knowledge of what Saya is and her situation to go off of. Does it mean she may yet take her life after all, even with what she has? Or has something else happened? She doesn't have the necessary information to understand beyond that relationship of those two is seemingly coming to an end, but she tucks that matter away, as Saya is already walking away and she can't bring herself to call out, despite the questions. They've had enough of each other already for one day(or several).

And had this little talk been about anything else, right about now she would take the other girl's parting words to heart, start to consider methods and options to make whatever needed to work work even if there was barely any chance of it actually doing so and that wasn't looking to change, continuing for days or weeks until some kind of decent answer came to her, out of respect for the girl's feelings and plea.

But there's nothing to think about, not about this.

She doesn't know why Saya is trying to push her and Hei together, but even if she did it still wouldn't matter. Any kind of feeling or some tattered remain of affection she may still harbor towards him doesn't matter. She knows that Hei cares for Saya and Saya, very apparently, cares for him, so even if something was to happen to Saya... if Saya was to disappear the next day and never return... she would never be able to step in and be something meaningful for Hei. She would never be able to be anything more than a friendship with him, if even that, out of good conscience and respect for herself and Saya]
