200 — Anniversary Festival!

Happy Anniversary, Marina Nova!

The bots have been busy cleaning up the dome and setting up decorations for this momentous occasion, and by now there isn't a nook or cranny left un-pimped! Bright blue MarinaNova flags wave happily in the artificial breeze together with the colorful ribbons that have been wrapped around poles. The streets are illuminated by strings of lights and paper lanterns and each sector gate has been lovingly decorated with fragrant flower garlands.

Of course, that is far from all! There wouldn't be much of a festival without entertainment and your loving wardens have made absolutely sure that there's something for everyone!

Sector 0 Fairground: If you want to go faster, you have to scream louder! Sector 0 has been taken over by a fairground where you can find such old classics as the bumper cars, a haunted house of mirrors, a more romantic tunnel of love, a roller coaster, a classic merry-go-round and, of course, a ferris wheel.

Game Booths: Step right up! Test your skill and win a prize! Throughout the dome there's a variety of game booths, ranging from the classic ring toss and high striker to kissing booths and dunk tanks. There's also a duck pond game, balloon darts and goldfish scooping game — with mechanical goldfish, of course!

The prizes are all of the carnival variety, including but not limited to: stuffed animals, fake tattoos, cheap bracelets and necklaces, stickers, rubber reptiles, silly hats, wiggle snakes and sticky hands or other sticky things.

Performances: The other way to show your skill! There are two stages set up in the dome: the first one with sound equipment and instruments suitable for a musical performance — or perhaps just karaoke! If no one is using the stage, it will automatically play randomly selected music from a wide variety of genres. The second stage is set up to accommodate physical performances like gymnastics and when no one is performing you're treated to a projection of ball room dancers, gymnasts, modern dance, ballet and similar things!

There are also street performers scattered throughout the dome. You can watch robots juggle, eat fire, swallow swords or charm robot snakes! There's also face painting and the occasional robot dressed up as a human statue for your amusement.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. You can find classic carnival food like popcorn, cotton candy, corn dogs, funnel cakes and pizza slices, but also takoyaki, okonomiyaki, candied almonds, gyros, pirogues, egg rolls and of course snow cones and ice-cream cones. The theme has of course extended to the drink selection and you're welcome to quench your thirst with lemon shake ups, butterbeer, mead and malted milkshakes.

Enjoy!

That's right. [A friendly smile, since he remembers him quite well from their earlier conversation.] Nice to finally meet you in person.

Likewise. [ He shifts a little. Idle chatter was never his strongest suit and that is all the more obvious in person. ] Have you, uhm... had time to settle in okay?

[Ianto, on the other hand, is quite good at small talk and politely ignores the awkwardness.] More or less. I've already managed to run into a bit of trouble with our captors, but otherwise things have been uneventful. I wasn't really expecting a festival like this in a prison, though.

One of the first things you learn in this place is to never expect anything. One day there's a raptor attack and the next we're celebrating Thanksgiving at the end of winter. [ A small smile, before moving on to more personal matters. ]

What kind of trouble?

While I appreciate being kept entertained and on my toes, I really hope they're done with the raptor attacks you mentioned.

[He's decided to avoid the awkward moment he had with Kitty and just get this discussion out of the way with most people. So he tugs back the sleeve of his suit, flashes the black wrist band and smiles like it bothers him less than it does.] I'm usually one for following rules, but not in places as absurd as this.

Oh. [ There's definitely some raised eyebrows here, but no great shock. He doesn't know Ianto, he has no right to judge how incredibly fast the man moves. ]

Yeah, they uhm... they have some arbitrary rules here, but it's actually better than it used to be. [ And for the sake of fairness he lifts his own wrist to show off the blue band that is partially concealed behind his wristwatch. ]

[In his defense it was with someone he was already seeing, but he doesn't particularly plan on going into the details of his personal life. Good to know he's not the only one around here with a wrist accessory, though.]

Arbitrary seems like the right word for it. How was it worse before?

Before, you could only enter a licensed relationship once. If that person disappeared or the relationship ended... well. You were out of luck.

Unlicensed relations were punished a lot harsher as well — you'd be fitted with a collar that repelled all physical contact, regardless of intention. For the first offense it'd be temporary, but if you broke the ban again... well. You'd be prohibited from touching another inmate for the rest of your life.

Well then in that case I'll consider myself lucky. I've heard a lot of people mention how things were before, but I'm not quite clear on just what that means. Was someone else in charge, or did something cause a sudden change in the rules?

I guess you could say it was a bit of both — this is actually the second facility we've been in, to my knowledge. The previous dome was structurally similar but the rules were different and the AI in charge also functioned in a different way.

I have a lot of information gathered on it back at the HQ. There's, uhm... there's a lot. [ He may have done nothing but information gathering for the first three weeks of his stay. ]

I'd be very interested in looking over the information you've complied, if you wouldn't mind. I don't particularly like being in a place I know nothing about. I hadn't realized this was the second facility, for example.

It's not exactly something they advertise. Luckily there's still quite a few of us left from that time. [ He says as if it was a century ago. ] The information is available to anyone who asks, so I have no problem with showing it to you.

[ And since I don't have it written out all neatly yet, I'll just link this part of a thread where he explained it to his team mates. It's pretty much the same. ]

It was day 174 when we arrived here, so that would make it twenty-five days.

[ Sure thing! Just ask if there's anything you're wondering about that information or what Ianto might find out through the IT, I have all the contact information up on this journal. ]

[Cool deal! Thanks!]

Yeah, you have to give them credit for that at least... it's certainly not boring, being stuck here.

Very easy. [ Sigh. ] Between everything that goes on here in an average week and how quickly some of the people here grow on you? It's really just a matter of time before staying starts to sound better and better.

Maybe that's why they throw festivals and give us nice apartments to live in.

Sure does the job of keeping us docile. Considering the power they hold over us just through the life support systems, it's not exactly easy to fight back either. We have everything to lose.

Have they ever made threats with the life support before? I know a lot of people have mentioned prisoners disappearing.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]thisiscalm
2013-01-11 09:01 pm UTC (link)
Threats? No... I have no doubt that they're capable of it though. There was an incident in the previous facility... a coup. A bunch of us ended up in the lower levels and the AI that was in charge at the time, uhm... rewrote our physical status. Dizziness, aches and pains, flu-like symptoms, completely out of the blue.

They're in control of the air that we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat and if that wasn't enough... if we're really at the depth they say we are, it'd be all too easy to wipe us out completely if need be.

[info]readystopwatch

They can do that? That's not particularly encouraging. [An understatement.]

I'm sorry. It occurs to me I've harassed you quite a bit both times we've met for information about this place but I haven't been polite enough to find out more about you.
