200 — Anniversary Festival!

Happy Anniversary, Marina Nova!

The bots have been busy cleaning up the dome and setting up decorations for this momentous occasion, and by now there isn't a nook or cranny left un-pimped! Bright blue MarinaNova flags wave happily in the artificial breeze together with the colorful ribbons that have been wrapped around poles. The streets are illuminated by strings of lights and paper lanterns and each sector gate has been lovingly decorated with fragrant flower garlands.

Of course, that is far from all! There wouldn't be much of a festival without entertainment and your loving wardens have made absolutely sure that there's something for everyone!

Sector 0 Fairground: If you want to go faster, you have to scream louder! Sector 0 has been taken over by a fairground where you can find such old classics as the bumper cars, a haunted house of mirrors, a more romantic tunnel of love, a roller coaster, a classic merry-go-round and, of course, a ferris wheel.

Game Booths: Step right up! Test your skill and win a prize! Throughout the dome there's a variety of game booths, ranging from the classic ring toss and high striker to kissing booths and dunk tanks. There's also a duck pond game, balloon darts and goldfish scooping game — with mechanical goldfish, of course!

The prizes are all of the carnival variety, including but not limited to: stuffed animals, fake tattoos, cheap bracelets and necklaces, stickers, rubber reptiles, silly hats, wiggle snakes and sticky hands or other sticky things.

Performances: The other way to show your skill! There are two stages set up in the dome: the first one with sound equipment and instruments suitable for a musical performance — or perhaps just karaoke! If no one is using the stage, it will automatically play randomly selected music from a wide variety of genres. The second stage is set up to accommodate physical performances like gymnastics and when no one is performing you're treated to a projection of ball room dancers, gymnasts, modern dance, ballet and similar things!

There are also street performers scattered throughout the dome. You can watch robots juggle, eat fire, swallow swords or charm robot snakes! There's also face painting and the occasional robot dressed up as a human statue for your amusement.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. You can find classic carnival food like popcorn, cotton candy, corn dogs, funnel cakes and pizza slices, but also takoyaki, okonomiyaki, candied almonds, gyros, pirogues, egg rolls and of course snow cones and ice-cream cones. The theme has of course extended to the drink selection and you're welcome to quench your thirst with lemon shake ups, butterbeer, mead and malted milkshakes.

Enjoy!

Well then perhaps you might donate those to some of the younger inmates and try some of the food.

[He's still very amused with her at the moment. But he looks around and points to some of the food booths. Honestly, he hasn't seen anything like this since his days as a young boy in Labarre, France.] Cotton candy or... other various foods that quite possibly should be illegal for its lack of nutrition.

I've been unable to locate a proper place to do so, and the majority of the inmates are not children. In fact, I do not believe I have seen a single child during my incarceration.

[ his suggestion, particularly cotton candy, has her furrowing her brow in confusion. cotton candy, of course, makes her think of cloth candy. ] Cotton candy?

You could decorate your room at the flat with them. That's certainly another option.

[Another option that he finds pretty amusing. But now he's looking around him at the various booths.] And you must try cotton candy at least once.

When I was a child, my parents gave me a toy Borg Cube to play with. [ she hadn't thought much of it then and had frankly been delighted to play with something pertaining to her parents' work. now, it was a disturbing thought and she resented them for desensitizing her to the drones who boarded their ship, who she hadn't initially perceived as a threat until it was too late. ] I should've been given stuffed animals.

[ her optical implant arches upward slightly. ] Is that an order, Captain?

Yes, you should have. [All that amusement he'd had dissipates as the implications of what her parents had done with her are once again all too apparent. It leaves him with a feeling of unease that he does his best to keep hidden. Instead he focuses on the last question, mulling it over for a moment before answering.]

And I do believe I will make that an order, Seven. Come with me. [Cotton candy most certainly wouldn't make up for Seven's lost childhood. But he suspected that it wouldn't do any harm either. He turns to walk toward the cotton candy booth, expecting her to keep up.]

They did not perceive the Borg to be a threat. It was our undoing. [ she's happy to leave the topic alone. discussing the hansens only brings up negative feelings of resentment and abandonment, a sense of helplessness and frustration over having been denied a normal human upbringing.

she falls into step beside him, matching his stride with ease. ]
While taste is irrelevant, as long as it is not made of leola root, I suspect I will enjoy it. [ the things the crew did to avoid eating the concoctions neelix made with leola root. some would rather eat sand than leola root. ]

Oh I suspect you will as well. It's a simplistic Earth concoction, really. Something you would usually find at a Carnival or a Fair, perhaps some sort of side show.

[He steps into the short line at the cotton candy booth, waiting their turn.] When I was a young boy, there was Carnival that came through close enough to the Vineyard that Robert and I could walk to it. We always saved the cotton candy for the walk home as our fingers would be sticky with it by the time we were done. Of course it is possible to eat without making a mess of it, but as a child you don't think of such things.

You were raised on Earth, France? [ data she acquired from reading his file in the federation database that wasn't assimilated by the borg, remarkably enough. trivial data such as personal experiences was often discarded if it didn't hold additional significance relevant to the collective's desires. ] I have never been to Earth.

[ which had her at odds with the crew at times when it came to their determination to get home. seven did not see earth as home. if anything, voyager was as close to a home as she'd ever get. she had no family she was aware of, and--

she regarded the captain with a curious expression as she realized that if she were to continue to consider the borg to be her family, despite how irrational and foolish that was (and she knew that now more than ever), that he was the closest thing she had to family in the entire federation in that regard. perhaps very distantly "related," but more in common with her than all 150 people on board voyager combined. ]

I will try not to think about the mess I will be making.

[She was right about that. And given time and the right initiative, Jean-Luc would come to the same conclusion. He still had much of the Borg implants and thought processes deeply ingrained in him, something he fought against rather than embracing. That is... unless he found it useful such as when he had first encountered Seven here and he wanted to determine her allegiance.]

Yes, just outside of a city called Lebarre. My brother owns the vineyard now and he lives there along with his wife and son. I rarely get back to visit them. I'm unsure of whether you would enjoy such a place. It's... fairly remote and quiet. [And he knows how comforting a mind full of voices can be to a Borg that doesn't know the pleasure of individualism. So it was more of a question even though it was posed as a remark.] Do you enjoy silence, Seven?

I was born on the Tendara Colony. I have few memories it, as I spent the majority of my childhood before I was assimilated aboard my parent's vessel, the Raven. [ she still had nightmares about that ship, odd visions of the had happened and numerous what ifs that plagued her while she was unconscious and regenerating, sometimes so powerful that they brought her out of her cycle to the computer informing her she had not completed it. those dreams had intensified for a while after seeing her father (still a drone under the queen's control) again. she thankfully has yet to experience them here. ] We landed and went planetside only to restock our rations. Unless the environment was considered ideal, my mother would tell me to stay in my room while they saw to the supplies.

[ she tenses at his next question, holding the stuffed animals tighter to her. ] No. I was left in command of Voyager for a month while the crew was in stasis. I had difficulty adapting and eventually succumbed to hallucinations caused by subnucleonic radiation affecting my sensory nodes.

[ quietly, she adds: ] I find silence to be... frightening. I do not enjoy it.

Ah Seven, I fear that your parents did you no favors by including you in their research. And yet I cannot say that many would not have done the same were they with child during such a crucial part of their careers, both personal and professional.

[It was really his way of empathizing with her situation, both before her Assimilation and after. She had never really had a chance to avoid it or to live the life of a human. And that was a sad, sad tale to him, all of the things she had missed out on.

Like cotton candy.

They were at the front of the line and he ordered only one cotton candy to share between the two of them. While the bot prepared it, he turned to look at her.
] Do you ever find yourself curious over the many things you missed out on? Or even ask yourself something as simplistic as why and how one can enjoy silence.

[ neelix had asked her once if she thought of her parents, the hansens, and if she had trouble existing without them. most days, that answer was no, but there were some when something, often the most insignificant of things, would remind her of something she faintly recalled from her childhood and she'd find herself regretting all that she'd missed out on. she'd also told neelix that naomi would adapt when her mother was almost lost, but now she's grateful they managed to find samantha wildman. naomi needs her mother, and seven's been doing her own part to keep naomi happy in ways she wasn't, taking time out of her schedule to play kadis-kot with her and teach her how to help out around the ship. she misses the girl. ]

Yes. I make an effort to explore such things, but there are some I find myself unable to understand, like silence.

Perhaps silence is something we can explore together at some point. There is something to be said for quiet thoughtfulness.

[He takes the cotton candy from the bot and they step aside to a bench where he gestures for her to have a seat, easier for her to set the stuffed animals down. He sits next to her.]

Now, you tear off a piece, just so. [He tears off a small piece, with an air that says that it's been some time since he's indulged in such things.] And let it melt in your mouth. [He gestures for her to try it before putting some in his mouth.] Go ahead.

I would like that. [ she can brave what scares her on such a deep, personal level if someone else -- especially someone who understands why silence is an ex-drone's worst nightmare -- is with her.

seven follows him to the bench, setting the stuffed animals down on an abandoned cart near the bench before she takes a seat herself. she reaches out hesitantly, but takes the wisp of cotton candy from him and pops it in her mouth. her eyes widen, having not expected it to dissolve so quickly. ]

It's... exceedingly sweet.

We will be sure to make it a point to do so then.

[He willingness to adapt continually caught him by surprise. And honestly, he was glad for it. His expectations in the beginning had been low, uncertain, laced with discomfort. But every time that she surprised him, he liked her company a little more.

Her reaction to the sweet concoction delights him and he smiles and even laughs a bit.
] Yes, I should say so. Perfect for the pallet of a child. Beware of licking your fingers and then touching the candy. That's where the trouble comes in.
