200 — Anniversary Festival!

Happy Anniversary, Marina Nova!

The bots have been busy cleaning up the dome and setting up decorations for this momentous occasion, and by now there isn't a nook or cranny left un-pimped! Bright blue MarinaNova flags wave happily in the artificial breeze together with the colorful ribbons that have been wrapped around poles. The streets are illuminated by strings of lights and paper lanterns and each sector gate has been lovingly decorated with fragrant flower garlands.

Of course, that is far from all! There wouldn't be much of a festival without entertainment and your loving wardens have made absolutely sure that there's something for everyone!

Sector 0 Fairground: If you want to go faster, you have to scream louder! Sector 0 has been taken over by a fairground where you can find such old classics as the bumper cars, a haunted house of mirrors, a more romantic tunnel of love, a roller coaster, a classic merry-go-round and, of course, a ferris wheel.

Game Booths: Step right up! Test your skill and win a prize! Throughout the dome there's a variety of game booths, ranging from the classic ring toss and high striker to kissing booths and dunk tanks. There's also a duck pond game, balloon darts and goldfish scooping game — with mechanical goldfish, of course!

The prizes are all of the carnival variety, including but not limited to: stuffed animals, fake tattoos, cheap bracelets and necklaces, stickers, rubber reptiles, silly hats, wiggle snakes and sticky hands or other sticky things.

Performances: The other way to show your skill! There are two stages set up in the dome: the first one with sound equipment and instruments suitable for a musical performance — or perhaps just karaoke! If no one is using the stage, it will automatically play randomly selected music from a wide variety of genres. The second stage is set up to accommodate physical performances like gymnastics and when no one is performing you're treated to a projection of ball room dancers, gymnasts, modern dance, ballet and similar things!

There are also street performers scattered throughout the dome. You can watch robots juggle, eat fire, swallow swords or charm robot snakes! There's also face painting and the occasional robot dressed up as a human statue for your amusement.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. You can find classic carnival food like popcorn, cotton candy, corn dogs, funnel cakes and pizza slices, but also takoyaki, okonomiyaki, candied almonds, gyros, pirogues, egg rolls and of course snow cones and ice-cream cones. The theme has of course extended to the drink selection and you're welcome to quench your thirst with lemon shake ups, butterbeer, mead and malted milkshakes.

Enjoy!

Well, rampant destruction can be fun. [She's glad to hear he differentiates, so it isn't all anti-alien. Another ring goes over another bottle.]

And you're a human from Earth? [Tends to be the majority anyway.]

Not if you're the one trying to stop it. [And if he's honest its much more destruction and guns blazing than helping aliens, but maybe that's just because they're unlucky.] What do you do? Before this place, obviously.

[A nod.] Cardiff, 2009. You?

True enough. [Story of her life really.]

I'm an X-Man. [Not using past tense because you're an X-Man for life. It just tends to be a short life. Hers was. Long story.] I was training the next generation of mutants. [Says the nineteen year old. Not that she doesn't present a bit older than that.] Trained assassin. [Surprise?]

I'm from Chicago, but the training facility was in the Rocky mountains.

[He would have understood. Torchwood employees die young and painfully. He can also take the odd combination of age and profession in stride. After all, its only a few years younger than he is and his job is weird enough. He has a hard time being shocked by much any more.] Sounds like an odd career change. What do you mean when you say mutants?

My husband at the time [awkward] wanted out of active work, so we went into the training thing.

And when I say mutants I mean this. [She takes a step through the solid booth. It remains completely intact, but she's definitely occupying the same space as parts of her disappear within the wood and colorful banners.] People born with genetic mutations causing—in most cases—special abilities.

[That sounds like a subject she doesn't want to discuss so he doesn't press about the husband thing.] It must have been a hard transition to make.

[His eyes widen, and he stops just short of a jaw drop, then lets out a low, impressed whistle.] Can everyone do that, or are all your abilities different?

I can't say I know every mutant on Earth, but I didn't run into anyone else who could phase until I was here. [She steps out of the booth again.]

And...the transition wasn't as hard as you might think. [She has never liked killing people. It was just necessary to protect others and for survival.]

There are a lot of mutants where your from, then? [It certainly sounds that way to him, but if there are why would they be called mutants, as if it isn't the norm?]

Not nearly as many as there are humans. Though that ratio was changing fast.

Is it a recent thing? What caused these mutations? [He's obviously such a nerd about these things and thinks this is the most fascinating thing ever.]

Not so recent. It's only been public knowledge for about a decade though. Don't know what caused it. Some say it's just evolution.

Not so well, but that probably has a lot to do with the genocide. [So calm.]

Don't worry about it. It's all I knew for years before coming here. Couldn't really afford to be too sensitive about it or traumatized by it.

Sounds like other worlds had better luck with it. [She had yet to meet another mutant who sounded like they were from a worse world. Not that everything was coming up roses either though.]

Are there other worlds with similar circumstances, then?

Other worlds with mutants anyway. I'm not the only one here.

I was going to say it must be nice to have them here, but this is a prison after all, so perhaps not.

[She shrugs.] I've been worse places. [Though the difference between being free and not being free is a huge one.] I didn't bring them here, so I think I can handle the company without the guilt.

Fair enough. I've been surprised how many people here I know. With all of time and space to choose from you'd think they'd be a bit more far reaching in who they abduct.

Rose Tyler and the Doctor. They're both from my world as well, and I've met them both once before.

I've only met them once as well, and we were all a bit busy saving the world at the time, but it's still nie to have a familiar face or two around.

Yeah... Most of my familiar faces are just faces and names and powers. They come with completely different memories.
