200 — Anniversary Festival!

Happy Anniversary, Marina Nova!

The bots have been busy cleaning up the dome and setting up decorations for this momentous occasion, and by now there isn't a nook or cranny left un-pimped! Bright blue MarinaNova flags wave happily in the artificial breeze together with the colorful ribbons that have been wrapped around poles. The streets are illuminated by strings of lights and paper lanterns and each sector gate has been lovingly decorated with fragrant flower garlands.

Of course, that is far from all! There wouldn't be much of a festival without entertainment and your loving wardens have made absolutely sure that there's something for everyone!

Sector 0 Fairground: If you want to go faster, you have to scream louder! Sector 0 has been taken over by a fairground where you can find such old classics as the bumper cars, a haunted house of mirrors, a more romantic tunnel of love, a roller coaster, a classic merry-go-round and, of course, a ferris wheel.

Game Booths: Step right up! Test your skill and win a prize! Throughout the dome there's a variety of game booths, ranging from the classic ring toss and high striker to kissing booths and dunk tanks. There's also a duck pond game, balloon darts and goldfish scooping game — with mechanical goldfish, of course!

The prizes are all of the carnival variety, including but not limited to: stuffed animals, fake tattoos, cheap bracelets and necklaces, stickers, rubber reptiles, silly hats, wiggle snakes and sticky hands or other sticky things.

Performances: The other way to show your skill! There are two stages set up in the dome: the first one with sound equipment and instruments suitable for a musical performance — or perhaps just karaoke! If no one is using the stage, it will automatically play randomly selected music from a wide variety of genres. The second stage is set up to accommodate physical performances like gymnastics and when no one is performing you're treated to a projection of ball room dancers, gymnasts, modern dance, ballet and similar things!

There are also street performers scattered throughout the dome. You can watch robots juggle, eat fire, swallow swords or charm robot snakes! There's also face painting and the occasional robot dressed up as a human statue for your amusement.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. You can find classic carnival food like popcorn, cotton candy, corn dogs, funnel cakes and pizza slices, but also takoyaki, okonomiyaki, candied almonds, gyros, pirogues, egg rolls and of course snow cones and ice-cream cones. The theme has of course extended to the drink selection and you're welcome to quench your thirst with lemon shake ups, butterbeer, mead and malted milkshakes.

Enjoy!

[Where there's food and excitement to be had, you can almost always bet Saber is close by... and sure enough she's found a spot on a bench, in a simple tee-shirt and jeans befitting the casualness of the festivities, and currently with a mug of butterbeer in one hand and a cone of cotton candy and a candied apple held between her fingers of the other.

Her other half stony partner is never too far away, so she's not terribly watchful of him at the moment, and plus she has her hands literally full now. Once done, though, she's certainly going to have to seek him out and wrangle him into having some food. For his own good]

Excuse me. Where'd you find that at?

[ she points to the cotton candy. sookie's seen a couple people walking around with it, but hasn't been able to locate the booth herself just yet. or maybe she's walked passed it without noticing, which is a strong possibility. ]

[She glances up from her perch, swallowing the mouthful of butterbeer she'd just taken before turning over to the left and uses a free finger to point in that direction as well] Over there.

[However, there's no bunches of colorful cotton candy to be seen hanging at all now, so she gets up with a perplexed expression]

--Strange. Perhaps it moved on.

[ moved. well, she couldn't really say she was surprised by things being shuffled around. this dome wasn't exactly known for consistency or things going they way they were supposed to. ]

Was it one of the bots or a booth of some kind? [ a cart, maybe? ]

'Twas a cart, manned by a machine. Small though, so perhaps it returned to restock its wares.

[She had gone through several of its bundles before settling down on the bench with her current one]

[ something about the way she speaks gives sookie pause. it reminds her of some of the older vamps she's come across, the ones who cling the past and haven't done much adapting when it comes to blending in with modern society. the old ones who are obviously old. ]

I'm sorry if this seems like an out of the blue question, but are you from modern times? Like, 20th or 21st Century?

[A thin eyebrow raises somewhat at the indeed "out of the blue" question, but she remains polite; the girl hasn't offended her or asked anything she isn't open about]

No, I lived during the late 900's.

Oh. Well, that's pretty... far off. Not that far off from when my boyfriend was born, but still far off from the 21st Century. Were you brought here from that time?

No, I had spent some time in the modern era-- 1991, to be precise-- and was taken from immediately after that.

...Who is your acquaintance, if I may ask?

[Someone has spent the last hour at one of the game booths, determined to defeat the stupid thing which has to be rigged. He finally returns to Saber's side, a bag of caramel corn in one hand and a fluffy, stuffed lion in the other. Both for her, of course, though he could be convinced to share the popcorn if she insists (as he expects she would).]

Looks like I'm too late. You're out of places to hold things.

[She's about halfway through her cotton candy when he returns, a wisp of it stuck to her chin as she merely gives him a curious look in answer to his question. Taking in the bag of popcorn and the stuffed toy he has on him with clear interest, her gaze lingers a bit more intently on the latter before she shifts her mug to her other hand before holding out her now free one to take whatever he means for her to take; she's personally assuming it's the caramel popcorn, it makes the most sense]

Where did you acquire that? [Like her outstretched hand, it's up in the air as to whether she means either the popcorn or the lion here too]

[He feels his face heat at her adorable reaction, but it's not enough to be noticeable. Hopefully. Besides, she's probably more focused on the candied popcorn or the stuffed lion he's carrying. The latter reminds him overmuch of Yomi, but it was better than the others.]

The popcorn is from a vendor. This [he holds out the lion, averting his eyes. Offering it to her without offering it directly.] came from the ring toss game.

[Her surprise at... well, all of this isn't hidden at all as she takes the stuffed toy from him and examining it with curious eyes, figuring that his focus on it means it's what he'd intended for her. Strange yes, but she's not disappointed; in fact, she plays with the fluffy-- and surprisingly soft-- mane, balancing it on her legs as she only has one free hand at the moment, before taking one of its front arms and giving a little wave with it]

It is rather small for a lion. But perhaps that is why it seems more endearing. [Matter-of-factly, as she fiddles with it. Actual lions, even cubs, didn't really tolerate being set in one's lap and played with]

[He does a poor job of fighting back a soft smile at her frankly adorable reaction to the lion. She seems to like it, which is a relief although, now that he considers, worrying may have been misplaced. Things since he returned have been so refreshingly easy that he's beginning to wonder why it had ever been so trying at all.]

They have bigger ones, if you want me to try again. [Zelgadis settles down on the bench, not overly close but enough that if he places the popcorn down she'll be able to reach it easily.]

[Even while taking a sip from her mug she keeps her attention on her toy, tracing a finger over the stitching on its belly, but a tiny frown forms when he speaks, and she turns the doll around to face outward before holding it to herself and looking over at him]

I would not invalidate the effort you already put forth into winning this one. No, you have my appreciation for it. [There's no shadow of falsehood in her words or returning smile at all, she truly is pleased by this. And the popcorn too, a little bit, from the approving sound she makes when she lets go of the lion long enough to pop a few into her mouth.

However-- there's yet another point of interest to her out there]

...What manner of games are there? [Skill or luck? She'll find no difficulty in either case]

[Only Saber could make him feel this good and this inadequate at once -- the latter being his own, perhaps fanciful, desire to be everything she could need. Even though she's stronger than he is in every way, that it's her who is everything he needs.] You're welcome.

[He thinks back on the games he passed by, making bets with himself over what she might like.] Shooting games and a game where you catch goldfish [hmm, not those...] and a test of strength. [Ah yes, that's the one.]

[She watches him expectantly as he lists them off for her, her honesty giving away in her expression her incurious opinion on the shooting game(hmph projectiles, she's not an Archer here), the goldfish(fish are only good for eating), before predictably animating at the mention of a test of strength.

She quickly downs the last bit left in her mug, and sets it on the bench as she hops up from the latter. Everything else is still gathered up in her arms; she'll naturally let Zelgadis hold onto it when they get to where they need to be]

Where is it?

[He blinks up at her, having only just taken his seat. But small matter in the face of something that would please her; he's been selfish enough for three lifetimes when it comes to Saber. No more.]

[The only complaint he issues is a grumble for her timing, delivered with fondness that can only come from the intimacy of true understanding. He knew that she would want to go immediately, just as she doubtless knew he would make a half-hearted attempt to find it off-putting. Such is their routine, and he basks in the familiarity as he gestures leftward.]
This way. I actually haven't tried it yet, either. [A challenge? Perhaps. He is fairly strong in his own right. (The weight helps.)]

[Her grin widens at both the failing complaint she expects from him, and his ultimate acquiescence, but she follows quietly to hopefully quell anymore insincere grumbling about her. She finishes off the last bit of her cotton candy before getting there at least, and mentions thoughtfully:]

Perhaps you should try first, then. It would be best if I have some idea of what it can handle.

[Wouldn't be the first time she broke equipment due to ignorance, so if it can handle Zelgadis, it can handle her]

[If he didn't know quite well what Saber is capable of, he might take exception to that. But mandatory grumbling aside, the trial they've endured has put him well past petty egoism.]

Fair enough. [He lifts the rubber-tipped hammer overhead and swings, all his weight and strength behind it. The measuring implement sails to the top of the ruler and tings the bell, having no ill effects on the mechanism. The strike isn't especially loud, and he has no doubt that Saber could have the bell resonating throughout the dome if she wished.]

[He hands her the hammer over with a grin. Your turn.]

[Trade with the toy and popcorn she's holding onto, then. Her grin is about just as big as his as she takes the hammer, and adjusting it in her grip-- inadvertently reminding herself of swinging a hatchet as a youth-- she judges the weight and durability of it until she's got an idea of how much force she should use. She wants to do well, naturally, but it won't do to keep anyone else form playing.

It's just half a pause before she suddenly swings with seemingly everything she's got, smashing the measurement panel so that the hammer bounces slightly and the indicator soars up into the bell with a sharp toll, the vibrations themselves audible long after the initial peal. She rests the hammer upright at her side, her hand atop it, and hmms as she simply stares at the bell]

...I suppose that we both are victors. [Since they both hit the top, and that's the point]

[Beginning to explain what he feels seeing Saber beat the hell out of the game would be impossible, even with one as good with words as he is. A combination of pride, envy, and awe in alternating amounts that can only be expressed in the lopsided smile he offers.] I'm not sure it was that close.

But I guess that means you get to pick a better toy. [Surely a performance like that can win her something more than a small stuffed lion.]

[Pulling a mock frown(that might be a little true, okay) she quirks her eyebrows at him, somewhat unimpressed with how it seems like he's trying to change her mind, when she's already stated she likes the lion quite a lot]

Better by whose decree? If it is by mine, then what has been given to me surpasses what I could earn here.

[Sure enough, she's ignoring the robot with the prizes as she speaks]

Surp-- [He was indeed starting to argue before realizing that she's claiming to want the toy he won for her rather than one of the larger ones she earned herself.]

[And then he feels like a complete ass, and an idiot to boot, and he's blushing too much to hide.]
If you're happy with that, then... [He trails off, not sure where he was going with that and reminding himself what Saber doesn't want and that he shouldn't read into this.]

[The flush is a surprise and even more so that he's not even bothering to cover it up or turn away, but she's smiling again too soon to really let it show, in good mood and just a little bit of victory too, over several things yes]

Indeed, I am. [She'll also be holding out a hand to take it back now, too] And now, where we shall go?

[More games? Or food? She has no current preference, which is partly why she's passing the torch]
