200 — Anniversary Festival!

Happy Anniversary, Marina Nova!

The bots have been busy cleaning up the dome and setting up decorations for this momentous occasion, and by now there isn't a nook or cranny left un-pimped! Bright blue MarinaNova flags wave happily in the artificial breeze together with the colorful ribbons that have been wrapped around poles. The streets are illuminated by strings of lights and paper lanterns and each sector gate has been lovingly decorated with fragrant flower garlands.

Of course, that is far from all! There wouldn't be much of a festival without entertainment and your loving wardens have made absolutely sure that there's something for everyone!

Sector 0 Fairground: If you want to go faster, you have to scream louder! Sector 0 has been taken over by a fairground where you can find such old classics as the bumper cars, a haunted house of mirrors, a more romantic tunnel of love, a roller coaster, a classic merry-go-round and, of course, a ferris wheel.

Game Booths: Step right up! Test your skill and win a prize! Throughout the dome there's a variety of game booths, ranging from the classic ring toss and high striker to kissing booths and dunk tanks. There's also a duck pond game, balloon darts and goldfish scooping game — with mechanical goldfish, of course!

The prizes are all of the carnival variety, including but not limited to: stuffed animals, fake tattoos, cheap bracelets and necklaces, stickers, rubber reptiles, silly hats, wiggle snakes and sticky hands or other sticky things.

Performances: The other way to show your skill! There are two stages set up in the dome: the first one with sound equipment and instruments suitable for a musical performance — or perhaps just karaoke! If no one is using the stage, it will automatically play randomly selected music from a wide variety of genres. The second stage is set up to accommodate physical performances like gymnastics and when no one is performing you're treated to a projection of ball room dancers, gymnasts, modern dance, ballet and similar things!

There are also street performers scattered throughout the dome. You can watch robots juggle, eat fire, swallow swords or charm robot snakes! There's also face painting and the occasional robot dressed up as a human statue for your amusement.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. You can find classic carnival food like popcorn, cotton candy, corn dogs, funnel cakes and pizza slices, but also takoyaki, okonomiyaki, candied almonds, gyros, pirogues, egg rolls and of course snow cones and ice-cream cones. The theme has of course extended to the drink selection and you're welcome to quench your thirst with lemon shake ups, butterbeer, mead and malted milkshakes.

Enjoy!

[ come one, come all: step right up and force this surly weirdo to do math on the spot!

piter is chilling in a booth with his feet propped up on the counter and his nose in a book, trying to ignore the fact that he has been put on display like a dancing monkey. mentats do not like to be belittled, and forcing one to function so mundanely absolutely qualifies as belittling. thus, piter is deeply, deeply dissatisfied with everything about this and making no attempts to conceal his distaste— and he will indubitably be sneaking off once in a while to get away from these ridiculous festivities. mentats are not the best with parties.

but! fellow inmates should certainly profit from his displeasure while he's around! please, do not hesitate to irritate him tremendously— just be prepared to receive a thorough sassing for it, and be wary of provoking future wrath.

[ with an audible, exasperated sigh, he lowers his book and stares. that was an even worse insult than this entire punishment has been to begin with. ] Are you incapable of reading?

With that sort of sign, it's hard not to read it as a calculator who'll behave like a human.

[ it had seemed obvious enough to him— then again, he does not speak english well at all yet. another heavy, theatrical sigh as piter looks straight up at his newfound companion, giving him a nice look at his human face. of course, his not-so-human-looking eyes are probably not helpful here. ]

This foolishness was not my idea; take up your grammatical quibbles with the Wardens.

[Quirking a brow at his sign.]

Really? [Helix wants to know why anyone would think this would be a fun thing to do.]

Well I guess any human able to count that fast could be considered a side-show freak.

[ not even going to bother to look up from his book. he is certainly not having fun, that's for sure. ] I am not doing this of my own volition. Simple calculations are my most basic function.

[ there's no indication of how helix's little comment jarred him, but he'd be ashamed to admit that it did, just the slightest bit. he consoles himself easily with the notion that helix is not worth the breath it takes to speak to him, as well as with the assurance that the fools he finds himself surrounded by haven't the slightest idea of how tremendously important and coveted he is. ... or, was. ]

I was commenting on your choice of words.

"My most basic function" Is not a very human sounding thing to say. You sound like a robot.

[ a hand comes up to wave dismissively as helix talks, as if trying to dispel his jabbering. ] I am a Mentat first and a man second.

[ it's true— such was his conditioning. it failed in some respects, of course, for a mentat is still always a human, but it's a half-truth that he's come to believe. it's evident even in his expression and posture that he believes it, believes it in lieu of dwelling on his human body and human emotions and all of the flaws that come with them. ]

[To say that he's surprised to see Piter there at all would be an understatement in itself, but finding him manning a booth is just on the wrong side of believable. Of course he'll stop. Of course he'll engage, it's what he does. ]

Somehow I don't think this was your idea.

[ seeing reid here actually isn't entirely unpleasant! reid is actually raising the pleasantness bar, in fact. how's that for the wrong side of believable? piter looks up from his book with a small, bitter smirk. ]

It was not. [ at least he find some small consolation in the fact that he's been spared from manning a kissing booth or a dunk tank. ]

[ The whole world has gone mad. It's nice to know that his presence is welcome though and that alone makes him relax, hands casually tucked into the pockets of his pants. ]

How long are they keeping you here? [ The whys are queue'd up, but he's not pushing his luck just yet. ]

[ a part of him knows that the whys will eventually come, but for now he is in no hurry to get to them. ]

An hour. I can only hope to be bypassed in favor of the kissing booths. [ it would give him time to finish this book— and he doesn't consider it to be an unfounded hope, given how enjoyable he has come to recognize the kissing booths to be. he could definitely use another kiss. ... not from reid, though. ]

That's not too bad then. [ Could've been worse, at least. And here is the moment we've all been waiting for: ] Why? I mean, you must've done something... say what you will about our wardens, but they don't seem to do things unprovoked.

There was a disturbance in Sector 6 recently; those noted to be in the sector during the day of the incident were questioned and punished.

[ phrased neatly and open ended, because the wardens still have not put forth proof that it was, in part, his hand that slew the foul creatures— but the unspoken sentiment is that he thinks reid can make an educated guess as to what happened. ]

There was a disturbance in Sector 6. [ with no desire at the moment for drama, he formulates a nice enough lie of omission. mentats are not excellent liars, but given his twisted nature, he manages, and lets a careful expression of vague disgust and bitterness creep into his expression to accompany his speech. ]

Their assumption was likely based on the fact that I've broken the neck of one of their precious wasps before— yet, what else does one do when attacked but retaliate? Self-defense, let it be known, is entirely punishable in this place.
