Characters: Everyone!
Setting: Great Hall, evening of Saturday, 30 October
Content: SFW
Summary: Everybody parties at the Halloween Ball!

This is your ball post, everyone! Here's how this will go.

Different locations in the Great Hall will be posted as separate comments, which will include a little description of each. These will be the Entrance Hall, the Dance Floor, and the Tables. You should reply to any/all of these comments with your character, and if other characters reply to that subthread, they are interacting with your character. Please indicate in the subject whether your character's subthread is open or whether it has participants in mind already (EG, maybe John is at the ball and taking a break from dancing at the tables, waiting to see if someone comes up to him, so the title for his comment would be "Jack/Open", but maybe Jill is meeting Adam at the ball, so she would reply to the Entrance Hall thread with "Jill/Adam" in the subject).

Please wait to reply the ball until all the comment locations are up. Backdating of threads/journals related to the ball is allowed until Tuesday, and posting placeholders is not allowed. If you have any questions, feel free to PM the mod account!

Now that you're inside, you can tell that the dance is rocking! Sonorus, a wizarding rock band that's been played all over teen stations on the WWW recently, has been booked for the dance. Well done, Dumbledore! Sonorus' songs are great to dance to, and so there are students getting their groove on en masse. The Professors seem to be turning a blind eye to dirty dancing, too, so long as you're in the midst of the crowd rather than on its fringes.

Having just that morning transfigured a spare button from his school trousers into a rather nifty stick-on moustache, Amos felt that his Clark Gable costume was rather a success. Having made his way back from the bathrooms - where he had been checking that the thing was still stuck on straight - Amos joined the crowd of dancers, grinning as a gang of second year Hufflepuffs descnded at once on their prefect to gawp at his Muggle-themed choice.

Most of her afternoon had been spent getting her hair perfectly in place. Ava usually was the type to just let it fall loosely in its natural waves or a ponytail, but for the occasion, it had to be pinned up without any stray tendrils. She'd managed to to obtain the perfect little black dress and gloves, and amazingly enough was able to vaguely resemble Audrey Hepburn.

As she made her way onto the dance floor to check things out and look around at all the costumes, she caught sight of Clark Gable getting ogled and looked over by some younger students. She grinned a little and walked up to Amos when there were a few less kids around. "Hello there, Mr. Gable." Her eyebrows rose a little when she was close enough to inspect his face. "Nice mustache."

Amos grinned wickedly at her and twiddled the ends of his moustache in a suitably rakish fashion. "You're not looking bad yourself, Ms Hepburn" he replied, having taken in the sight of a dressed-up Ava as she approached.

Putting on his most charming Clark Gable-esque smile, he offered her his arm. "Fancy a dance?"

Until late last night, James had been in a state of utter confusion. He had been sure that would be a perpetual state he'd have to work himself out of. When his sole supporters began to accept this fact as well, the boy figured he was a lost cause. Still he did his best to mimic the actions of the Marauders, knowing well enough that was a good place to start acquiring his former glory again. The one thing he couldn't bring himself to, however, was loathing Severus Snape. He couldn't quite figure out why he'd begun to hate the boy to begin with. Sure he was a Slytherin, and from all James had read, he didn't receive Slytherins warmly back in the day (i.e. two weeks ago). All that aside, Severus had made a point to meet with him following his arousal from the comatose state, and through him James was able to piece together the missing information. When James had finally come clean with Sirius, his other half was beyond furious. He wasn't sure if Sirius was more upset over the fact Severus had visited, that he had told James about the accident, or the fact James was grateful for him. Nevertheless, the damage had been done.

True to Lily's suggestions to Pomfrey, James' memory returned shortly after his relocation to the Gryffindor boys' dorms. He made arrangements to spend alone time with Lily that evening in hopes they could start building up a relationship again before their upcoming date, and out of nowhere he began to recall information no one had told him about recently, such as the falling out between Lily and Severus. Though the two were beyond ecstatic his memory was coming back full steam, it was somewhat bittersweet. Having seen a different perspective of his rival over the past few days, James felt somewhat guilty for the way his friendship with Lily had turned out. He wasn't about to tell that to anyone else, particularly because it was a brand new feeling he wasn't willing to face just yet. Surely he couldn't go on being friendly to Snape, but maybe he could refrain from torturing him without just cause. That would be apology enough, right?

James forced himself not to think about the events of the past week this evening, though. He had made plans to meet up with Lily on the dance floor within the hour, and prior to that the Marauders would have to successfully sneak in and spike the punch. Thankfully working mischief once again brought back a great deal of his former pride, and as far as anyone else could tell, the old Potter was back in action. Wormtail slipped past Filch in his animagus form, only to cause a ruckus in the Great Hall to gain pursuit. At that point, the remaining Marauders poured various bottles of alcohol into the punch. Just prior to that they'd spiked the reserves in the kitchens directly below, so the entire evening was set. It helped they'd mixed potions into the concoction to ensure the taste of alcohol was so faint that the adults and prefects couldn't figure them out.

Once that was finished, Remus returned to wait in the Entrance Hall for Dorcas while James and Sirius moseyed about the dance floor as the other students began filing in. Though James had gone as Godric Gryffindor before, this year he decided to one-up himself by working with Sirius to nick the original sword of Godric from Dumbledore's office. It was a tricky feat, but they managed. If anything, Sirius seemed tickled pink to have James back to his normal shit-disturbing self.

James cut his best mate's talk short with an abrupt hand to Sirius' chest, his eyes glued to something, or rather someone, else. Even though he could only catch glimpses of her hair through the crowd of students, he knew precisely who that was. "Sorry, mate," he interjected, his eyes still fixated as he allowed his hand to drop from Sirius' chest. With that, James began the trek through his fellow students on the way to Lily, giving a smile here and a clap of the shoulder there as they welcomed him back.

Though Lily often proudly stated with Dorcas that she was not a 'giddy girl', that just meant that her whole life didn't revolve around preparations for balls and dates, not that she couldn't enjoy them, or even devote the occasional day to them. Today, for example. The Halloween ball was always a big celebration, and this year was no exception. Both of Lily's costumes, the Athena gown for tonight and her slightly more risqué costume for tomorrow, were ordered from a muggle mail-order costume catalogue her mother had sent her.

Because tonight was a special occasion, Lily allowed herself to primp a little. She felt she deserved it, too, after the stresses of the last week. Having someone you deeply cared about fall into a coma and then suffer from amnesia all in the same week took its toll on a girl! She let her stress out by taking an extended bath in the prefect's bath, then spent most of the afternoon getting ready with Dorcas and keeping her friend focused on the evening to come rather than the one that had just transpired. She wasn't going to let anything ruin the evening that Remus had planned so much for, after all, especially not since Lily knew that Remus and Dorcas would be just wonderful together.

In regards to her own date, Lily was excited to be going with James, as they had originally planned back before everything in their lives had gone a bit mad. Hopefully the insanity would be merely temporary, and everything would be a little calmer now, at least for a while. James had asked her to meet him on the dance floor, undoubtedly because he and his mates were going to pull some sort of prank (likely their usual punch-spiking). Lily was actually pleased that he had made that request, because it meant he was compromising and trying to split his time equally between her and his mates-and his failure to do just that was what had started the avalanche in the first place, so this was a welcome change.

Lily had left Dorcas at the entrance hall to find her man and was mingling at the edge of the dance floor, eyes idly casting around for James or perhaps one of her mates to chat with, when she felt a hand on her waist. She smiled at once and turned, knowing it would be James. Her smile widened when she was proved right, and Lily reached up a hand to the back of his neck, pulling him gently down to her for a soft kiss. "Hello, Godric," she teased gently when they separated, taking in his costume with a glance, then looking into his eyes again.

Trish had certainly been throughout the masses this evening. She and Ed had danced a bit, mostly in a ridiculous fashion for the sake of a laugh, and she'd even managed to sneak in a few with Mia and some of her mates. About halfway through the ball she headed to her table to set her hat down next to her muggle broom. Trish knew she ran the risk of someone lifting her props should she leave them, but at this point she couldn't care. The girl had to free herself in hopes of cooling down a bit. It was hot enough in that heavy, black material! One of her mates blew on Trish's neck to help cool her down, but she still opted for paying a visit to the punch bowl. By this point in time, she'd already had a few drinks. She couldn't taste the alcohol, but she knew it had to be there. For one, Sirius had acted all too fishy in his recent journal entry. That aside, Trish felt as if she were getting tipsy despite her not tasting the heavier drink.

She downed another glass before pitching it in the rubbish bin, deciding it was best to make her rounds on the outskirts of the dance floor to ensure students were behaving. Distasteful dancing hardly concerned Trish. She just wanted to make sure no further arguments broke out. Already a Slytherin and Ravenclaw student, both sixth years, had to be escorted out of the Great Hall. The staff was on high alert, so Trish figured it was best to pull her weight.

Circling a group of third years, Trish spotted one acting particularly boisterous as she flaunted her cup of spiked punch around, spilling it all over the dance floor. Instinctively Trish's hand shot out to catch her wrist before the other hand removed the cup from her grips. "Sorry, love. Perhaps if you and the gals care for refreshments the tables would be more appropriate?" The group slowly staggered away from their mess, at which point Trish unpocketed her wand and gave a quick clean-up. Once that was sorted, she set the nearly empty cup on a tray as one of the house-elves slipped past. Pocketing her wand once again, Trish began fanning herself with her hand as she continued to patrol the floor.

For his part, Sirius had been having an excellent time ever since James ditched him to go find his girl. He had had more than a few glasses of the punch, and danced with several really fit birds. His costume certainly did him plenty of favours where they were concerned. After all, who didn't want to imagine Sirius Black as their own personal knight in shining armour?

As the latest song ended, Sirius gave his latest partner a kiss on the cheek as a goodbye, and then slipped off to look for someone new. Suddenly, he caught a glimpse of Trish Fells, to whom he had promised a dance. For a moment, he was confused by her costume, and then he remembered seeing a picture of it in his Muggle Studies text. She was dressed as a muggle interpretation of a witch, of course. Sirius had to laugh to himself as he wove through the crowd towards her. What a clever way to stick it to the purists!

When he got close, he noticed Trish fanning herself. In his typical overconfident fashion, Sirius reached out and took the hand with which she was fanning herself, and shot her a winning grin. "Is it hot in here, or is it just me?" said Sirius, oozing charm. Without waiting for a response, he set his other hand on her waist and pulled her a bit further into the crowd, just as the next song started up. "I think I'll take that dance now."

As the knight made his way toward her, Trish didn't notice. She'd been preparing to head off another group of troublemakers. Fortunately for them Sirius managed to snag her hand in advance to her getting anywhere. Shifting her eyes back to the culprit, she couldn't help but smile when she realized who it was. Despite the fact he was a year younger, it went without saying it was damn near impossible not to enjoy one's time when she had Sirius' complete attention. As he complimented himself in an underhanded, yet obvious way, Trish tossed her head back and laughed briefly before shaking her head at him. "It's not just in your head, dear knight. I tend to have that effect on people," she teased, feeling his hand slip around her waist as he guided her toward the dance floor. "Just in the nick of time, you know. I was about to dock your house points for deceiving me." Of course Trish had planned nothing of the sort, but it was just her way of thanking him for the offer. "I think I'll give it to you, in that case."

Typically Trish wouldn't flirt about with other boys when on a date of her own, but Ed was her best mate. He'd only agreed to go with her under the initial assumption they'd be babysitting Mia and Tiberius. Since that was no longer a problem and Ed was off on his own, Trish figured it couldn't hurt to have a dance or two with Sirius. That aside, it had been far too long since she'd flirted around with a bloke. Ed had requested she stick to the list he'd predetermined a few weeks ago, and needless to say, Sirius Black was nowhere on that list. She figured he'd understand all the same.

Once the couple had stopped near the middle of the dance floor, Trish reached with her free hand to pull the hair clip from her formerly tightly bunned hair. It had been heavy enough all night, and frankly she was ready to let loose a little more. Perhaps the punch had something to do with that, but Trish didn't know nor care at this point. Slipping the clip over the neckline of her gown, Trish wrapped both arms around Sirius' neck before lowering them to his chest, her hips swaying along to the most recent, upbeat Sonorus single. "Try to keep up," she added as she leaned in to his right ear, trying to make it possible for him to hear her over the music. As Trish pulled back she cocked an eyebrow at him as if to challenge the boy, tossing her head back to keep her hair out of her face before her hands slipped up to his neck again, holding him at a distance for a short while before allowing him to pull her in closer.

Molly couldn't have asked for a better birthday, really. She knew, of course, that the Halloween Ball wasn't for her, specifically, but it was just wonderful to see everyone having such fun- well-mannered frivolity! It didn't hurt, either, that she actually felt- if not beautiful, well, at least pleased with her outfit. Her mother had made the dress (in a light blue, with red trim), and she had knit rabbit ears to wear as well- the goal being to imitate Babbitty Rabbitty. (It wasn't perhaps the most clever idea, but Molly enjoyed it.)

Though she wasn't really dancing with anyone in particular, just in a group of students, she didn't mind. This was perfect, so far as she was concerned.

Deciding to dress up as someone who she felt matched her personality, Mary was going as Miss Elizabeth Bennet from the classic of Muggle literature, Pride and Prejudice. It was probably the only time that Mary was happy wearing a dress. And, secretly, if she met her Mr. Darcy, that would just be all the better.

Even though dancing was not normally her cup of tea, she saw Molly in the crowd and began wading over to her friend.

"Molls! Happy birthday! I'm so happy that everyone else realized that we needed to throw a school-wide event to honor you. And you look great! But... who exactly are you supposed to be? The Easter Bunny?" Mary guessed from the ears. Being of Muggle background, she never grew up hearing any of the Tales of Beadle the Bard.

OOC: Sorry! Mary posted while I was writing mine and I didn't refresh. So I'm reposting and adding her in! :D

Once she left Trish and Ed to their own devices, she figured it was time to have some fun. Unlike some of the student body who steered clear of the punch just in case, Mia had a glass or two before she hit the dance floor. She wasn't sure if it was spiked since she couldn't taste the alcohol, but she did start to feel rather giddy the longer she drank. Which is exactly when she stopped herself and decided to dance it off. There were plenty of students on the dance floor, and she was even lucky enough to find Trish a couple times.

Laughing as she came out of a spin, Mia turned and spotted a familiar shock of red hair a few feet away. The rabbit ears had her brightening with delight, and she hurried over to Molly with an eagerness in her step. She'd left her cloak at one of the tables where some girls from her year had seated themselves, so only the dress flowed around her as she spun her way towards her friend. "Mol! I love your costume!" Embracing her friend, Mia then pulled back and beamed. "How is the birthday girl doing this evening?" She said with a grin, then turned as Mary approached from the other side. Surveying the other girl's costume, Mia gave her a smile and a wave as she greeted Molly. "She's Babbity Rabbity!" she said, then looked over at Molly just in case she was wrong; and so her friend could explain who that was.

After all the Huffledrama this week (and earlier, even), Ro was relieved to have the night off to just let go. She had dressed as Marilyn Monroe, and a simple charm blew her dress up ever so slightly (just to her knees- nothing indecent) every now and then. If she got looks for the muggle-themed costume, she didn't care- Ro felt sexy, and that was all that mattered to her. This was her last Halloween Ball, and dammit, she was going to enjoy herself.

If Halloween was a time to slip into costume, then Bertie decided to extend an effort and go as a prince. The irony was obviously not lost on him, as he carefully hid his flask in his pocket. He and Ed had swigged a couple shots of Firewhiskey beforehand, because no bloody way was Bertie facing a school-organised event sober. Ed had already scampered off to find Fells and his sister, which meant that he was left to his own devices. As he lazily sauntered into the dance floor, the chainmail made a clanking sound with every step he took. He hoped he would recognize at least somebody worth talking to.

He caught sight of a flash of white-blonde hair amidst the crowds of people. "RO!" he barked over the buzz of idle chatter, hoping that she'd heard him. A wind came out of bloody nowhere and he noticed Ro's dress flare up to her knees. "Lookin' good," he exclaimed, giving her a wink.

The events the previous night had Kira up until the early morning hours, so she'd slept in until lunchtime on Saturday. That being said, it had been entirely worth it to support her friend in the face of uncertainty. Busting into Narcissa's party had been necessary, but now that it was over, they could all rest a little more at ease knowing Dorcas was on the same page as they were in regards to the entire thing (or at least hoping she was anyway)!

True to the prearranged plans with Lily and her mates, Kira donned a dress she knew would fit the time period for the Jane Austen book Pride and Prejudice. Considering Elizabeth Bennett was an easy character to confuse with Austen favorites, even for those who'd read some of the novels time and again, Kira opted to take a large copy of the book with her for good measure. She used a bit of magic to make it appear more ratty and break the spine open some more, but other than that, she assumed anyone who knew of Lizzie had to put two and two together. She didn't figure many of the students at Hogwarts would be able to decipher who she was going as considering it was a muggle character, but even so she was pleased with herself. It was a shame she didn't have time to work on transfiguring her trunk into Mr. Darcy, but she justified herself in the fact he was a disagreeable sort up until the very end of the story anyhow.

Dancing about with a group of sixth years, Kira swayed to the song. It was a remake of the Hobgoblins' 'No Bones About It'. Kira screamed on impulse, cheering at the band before raising her arms over her head and dancing around in circles like no one was watching. So much for looking a lady! She'd argue Lizzie would have done the same thing if she had only known the brilliance that was Sonorus.

Then, out of nowhere, Kira felt something smack into the back of her head. It was a flimsy sort of something, which obviously provoked her attention. She began to turn to face to culprit, when her eyes went wide. Her hands shot out in front of her face to defend against another freely swinging purple limb before Kira interjected. "What the hell? Who's in there?" she questioned, tugging the nose of the strange creature upward to try to get a better look.

Xeno was twirling and jumping in such an extravagant way that he was surprised when his momentum was put on hold when the nose of his costume was grabbed. "Oi! What in the bloody hell-" The head of the costume flew back and Xeno was suddenly looking down at a disgruntled young woman dressed in an old fashioned gown holding a rather tattered copy of a book he remembered reading in Muggle Studies.

"Oh. My apologies, Miss Bennett is it?" Xeno gently took Kira's hand in his, bowed, and kissed the top of her hand.

He saw Mia, and his whole world shut down for what seemed like minutes. When his self-awareness decided to return to him, he had neither the time to be embarrassed nor to recover. He knew that what he had to do had to be done soon, so he abandoned all regard for propriety and came to her side.
It was only after he barged in that he noticed he had utterly ruined some obviously much enjoyed girl time. Mia's expression immediately changed and Tiberius' regret had started rising. He was stupid for a lot of things lately. He had let things get the best of him and he hadn't tried hard enough. Accepting those ideas were much easier for Tiberius transformed, but of course no one else knew that. Barging in with no attempted costume and two days without a shower straight to Mia probably embarrassed her more than anything.
He had to force himself out of feeling regret in order to plow on. He leaned dramatically fast and close to Mia and barely breathed voice, "Can we talk, alone maybe? Somewhere where you can hear me?"

Mia was enjoying her time with Molly and Mary. She owed a great deal to her mate for convincing her to come to the dance anyway, and there was a birthday to celebrate! Not to mention she had had some punch and her head felt like it was floating away. After dancing for what seemed like hours, since it was one thing she was most passionate about, she decided to stop and take a small break to talk with her friends. The last thing Amelia Bones expected was for a very familiar face to come out of nowhere quite suddenly. She nearly jumped when Tiberius came over to her without hesitation, though she did gape for a few seconds as her stomach did a few flips. Casting a glance at Molly, she then swallowed and returned her eyes to him with no less confusion on pretty face. Yet amongst all that confusion, there was a good deal of hurt that she was trying unsuccessfully to hide.

As he leaned in close, she had absolutely no idea what he was going to say, though Tiberius' words shouldn't really have come as a shock. Managing a nod first since Mia still couldn't seem to find her voice, she eventually cleared her throat so she would stop gaping like an idiot. "Of course." Turning to the two girls, she excused herself, promising to find Molly again later, then waited for Tiberius to lead her wherever he intended for them to talk.

Things had been going according to the plan quite smoothly. He ad gotten Mia to talk to him so he could justify and explain things. He headed off to find the farthest available table from the music. He felt the dim lighting would help him tell his side.

Once they had seated themselves, Tiberius was hit with a sort of shock. He had gotten what he planned to happen, yet he was unable to find the words to begin explaining himself. The plan did not extend beyond this point, so Tiberius was at a considerable loss.

He finally managed to speak with, "Well, I'm sorry I canceled our date. But at least I made it, yeah?" He chuckled at this to himself masking his uncertainty. He didn't know where this could go or end up doing.

Remus was just a few steps behind Dorcas as they made their way out onto the dance floor. It was a bit louder here, and he leaned in closer to her to speak into her ear so he could be sure she'd hear him.

"I'm absolute rubbish at this, so if I'm embarrassing I apologize," he blushed a bit. The other Marauders had taught him a few things during their years together, but he always felt mildly awkward. Somewhat like his arms and legs were connected properly to his body. He started very small, taking one of Dorcas's hands in his and twisting just a little bit from side to side. It wasn't much, but he wasn't exactly captain confidence like his mates.

The dance was going perfectly for one Theodore Jordan. He'd decided to go solo simply because that meant he could dance with as many ladies as he wanted (never mind he hadn't been able to find a date because he'd procrastinated or lost his touch). He was happy with the decision, and even MORE happy with his costume choice for the evening. In true Teddy fashion, his costume had to be amusing, and it definitely showcased the arrogance he was so famous for. While at a costume shop in muggle London, his father had pointed out an idea that they both found too perfect and amusing to pass up. It was a gigantic box, complete with gift wrapping and a bow on the sides; the top of which when on his curly poofed head. There was a gift tag sticking out to one side that read: "To-Women From-God". Teddy had been tempted to add something that said 'you're welcome' to complete the god's gift to women joke, but decided against it at the last minute.

Once he arrived, he went around greeting friends, and was definitely pleased with how much praise he got for his idea. He soaked up the praise, and then Teddy headed for the punch table; which then led to a rousing trip to the dance floor. It was a little difficult to dance with the box surrounding his body, but of course he made do. At least he thought he was until he did a particularly enthusiastic spin and felt the corner of his box jab someone behind him. Attempting to turn and apologize, Teddy just hoped it wasn't some poor girl or something.
