you're not as brave as you were at the start.
Who: Sam, Lotti, and Julian.
Where: In town, not far from an ice cream parlour!
When: Afternoon.
Maybe he should have tracked down a map. That was all he could think as he slowed his gait and came to a stop in the middle of the sidewalk, looking first one way and then the other, shrugging his shoulder a little to jostle the strap of the backpack more firmly into position. The driver who’d brought him into town after picking him up about fifteen miles away had set him down almost right in the centre of Scarlet Oak but now that he was here Sam didn’t have the first clue where to go or what to do with himself. A map would be a good idea. That was if he could read a map, which he couldn’t.
Maybe this hadn’t been a good idea after all. Standing there wringing his gloved hands together and looking around without the first clue what he was looking for, Sam found himself wishing, on some level, he’d never come here. He was tired, he was hungry, he hadn’t slept properly since he’d left Montana, and he didn’t know what to do next. It all left a distinctly hollow feeling in his chest, not to mention his stomach, and as he stepped back awkwardly out of the way of a couple with a child in tow he found himself feeling increasingly uncomfortable. Here he was in an unknown place where he didn’t know anyone and he hadn’t thought things through, not in the least.
He was an idiot. That was where his mind went and that was where it would stay. Until he came up with something, some kind of plan. If he came up with something. And it wasn’t just what he would do next but where he would go, where he would take shelter, what he would do about food. About water. Why hadn’t he thought this through? Sam felt the back of his pack brush up against a wall behind him and he stopped, he hadn’t even realised he’d carried on moving after stepping out of that couple’s way and he turned his head to watch them go. They were almost to the end of the street now. Still wringing his hands he looked the other way and shuffled his feet, thinking about taking a step forward again.
This was a bad idea. Bad for so many reasons. This was why the others had always made fun of him, put him down and kept him there. He couldn’t do things for himself, he had never been able to, he never would either and now he’d gone and dropped himself in the middle of a strange place with nowhere to turn. Sam sighed and frowned.
