It was situations like this that reminded Sam why it was foolish to be hopeful about anything. It wasn't that he had gotten his hopes up, he didn't do that anymore, but every now and then something happened that cemented it all in his mind. It wasn't for people like him to get excited about anything, they didn't get the same things other people did, they had a set place in the world and it wasn't light or positive or happy. Those like Sam were at the bottom of the pecking order, the lowest rung on the hierarchy ladder, and there were things they were good for but none of them were pleasant. For Sam thought that was just his life, what it had been for years, and he was as accustomed to it as any person could be when the only purpose their life had was to be demeaned and tormented by those bigger and stronger and more dominant than himself.
As soon as Julian reacted the way he did Sam was reacting too, shuffling swiftly away as far as he could, his back pressed against the wall and the bared teeth awoke instincts that were deeply rooted inside of him. He cowered, not just a little and not subtly. He really cowered, hunching and shrinking down, the only tension in his body the kind that helped a person to brace for a physical strike, his face turned away and his eyes closed. The turning of his head bared his throat in an additional display of submission and with his eyes closed there was no chance he could accidentally challenge the aggressor. In the back of his throat he whined, an actual animal whine, frightened and apologetic at the same time. It wasn't just his body that trembled but also his voice, there was a shaky and thin quality to his voice when he spoke, the faltering stutter back in full force as he fumbled his way through his words; "I-I'm sorry, I--" His voice caught but he pushed through it. "I-I can l-leave. I didn't--" Mean anything by it. That was an excuse and he wasn't supposed to do that. Give excuses. "I-I heard h-his name." And came looking for him. But if he wasn't welcome then he could leave, find somewhere else to go. The last thing Sam wanted was to make trouble.
