It was getting cold rather quickly now with the winter holidays right around the corner. In just a matter of days, the echoes of multi-colored leaves had faded, fallen to the ground, leaving nothing but withered branches in their absence. Soon enough, there would be snow. 

Megan had been in the Great Hall, mulling over a bowl of hot oatmeal, topped with melted brown sugar, when out of the corner of her eye she caught the sight of Neville Longbottom exiting the dining area. 

Neville Longbottom. Gryffindor Extrordinaire.

She wondered if the majority of the Hufflepuffs in her year disappeared, would she become more Puffy to fill the gap?

Megan finished the last of the bowl and swung her legs over the bench and into a standing position. Quickening her footsteps, she caught up to the awkward boy. "Oi, Longbottom."

"Once you've successfully cast the curse, give your subject a few simple tasks. Have them pick up a book then maybe have them imitate an animal, perhaps a monkey." Amycus said, a small leer twisting his mouth. That second command should be easy enough to pull off when the class - like the school - was overrun with these dirty-blooded animals.

"Remember the longer a subject is under the Imperius Curse, the harder it is to fight off. As the recently departed Alastor Moody found out a few years before." It bugged him that annoying old besom Umbridge had taken Moody's eye; Amycus would have quite liked that little trophy for himself.

"After they've completed the simpler tasks, you're going to ask them to point their wands at themselves and perfom a hex. Nothing too big or painful." For now. "Maybe just a Stinging Hex. Because once your subject is willing to hurt themselves or a loved one, then you have total control over them and you have mastered the Imperius Curse."

Over the past few weeks, Amycus had grown suspicious. The students hadn't put up the fight he'd expected when they started on the Imperius. They were taking to it too easily. The little brats were up to something, he could feel it. But he couldn't prove it. The Imperius Curse was an easy enough one to fake without worrying about detection.

To a point.

He'd given each student a white rat to put under Imperius, knowing there was no way they could fake that.

"When you've successfully cast the curse," he began as he strolled through the room, "make your rat stand up on its hind legs. Maybe have it give a little wave with its paw."

According to Mr. and Mrs. Jones, Megan was spending her Saturday evening work at the Gemini. In fact, Darlene was given strict orders to cover for Meg if she had any contact with Megan's parents, though that was rather unlikely. Mr. Jones had never even visited Diagon Alley without the attendance of his daughter and Mrs. Jones was working late that night, catering a party at a local museum.

As soon as her shift was over, shortly before suppertime, Megan changed out of her work robes in the backroom and into something more suitable for underground bar. One of her favorite bands, Phoebe's Oracle, was playing tonight at the Fwooper & Hellhound and Megan would be damned if she let the bar's location prevent her from seeing them.

She was nervous, of course, to head down Knockturn Alley, but she did not allow her fears to be visable. Her face was stoney, a look that was easy for her, as she pushed open the door to the establishment. Inside, it looked nothing like her typical gatherings - the Three Broomsticks or even the Leaky Cauldron. Megan was hoping it was not obvious that she was a newcomer here.

But as she hear the sounds of the band warming up on stage, all her worries were pushed aside. Surely her love for this hard edged indie band, would make her a welcomed customer.

It was amazing that what started out as a simple shift at the cafe could turn so terribly ugly. Megan hadn't realized it at first, simply navigating between the tables - leaving steaming beverages at some, clearing empty cups from others. In fact, if it hadn't slowed down from a post lunch rush, she might not even have noticed it at all.

Two older witches sat at a table in the corner casually sipping tea, yet their conversation touched on more than just their knitting or attendance at last week's social. As Megan dropped off a saucer of lemons, she overheard such stinging words "filthy", "dangerous", and "Muggles" - not to mention "I support whatever needs to be done..."

When it became obvious that there would not be enough customers for the remainder of the evening to support the current wait staff, Megan's boss relieved her from her shift. It was only 8pm - which many people consider early on a regular day, let alone on Saturday, but the lull in business didn't suprise Megan. Diagon Alley had not been the same in the last year, with more and more business mysteriously disappearing overnight - while other suffered simply from lack of patrons. Fortunately, the Gemini Cafe had continued to pull in crowds during the day with the temptation of well made coffee and tea drinks. But the closer it got to nightfall, the quieter it became. More and more people were rushing home earlier, finding a sense of safety behind the walls of their private residences.
