Things that go bump in the night

Summary: Anthony is curious about his sister and ends up getting locked out of his house

Had Anthony not been up late that night, reading the latest chapter of the Transfiguration book he had picked up a few weeks ago, he might not have heard it at all. It started with a door closing almost too quietly to notice. Then there was a rustle and a creak, followed by dead silence - the kind of void that would be created if someone had realized how much noise they were making and then whispered a silencing charm.
Anthony slipped out of his bed and went to his own bedroom door, pressing his ear against the wood. He paused, hoping to hear another clue, but was left empty handed. Slowly, he opened the door and slid through the crack. The hallway was dark and empty, but did not stop Anthony from tiptoeing his way downstairs into the main portion of the house. In the living room he hesitated. Should he veture toward the back of the house, to the dining room and the kitchen? Or should he head to the front, where the store was located.
That was when he heard it. The click of the latch on the back screen door. Quietly, Anthony hurried back into the kitchen, just in time to see a shadow grow smaller as it walked away from the house.
Immediately, Anthony knew it was Rachel. He glanced up to the clock on the kitchen wall and noticed it was almost 12 am. Now, if Rachel had been slipping into the house at that point, sneaking in past curfew, he would not be worried. But to leave the house at this time of day? His mind raced as he approached the back door, exiting as quietly as he could.
