TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

This is the day many of Gooseberry's Quidditch players have been waiting for. The mood is tense, as a lot of the participants have pinned a great deal on making this team. Thorn repeatedly tries to assure the athletes that this won't be a make or break deal for their Quidditch career, but a lot of his words fall on deaf ears. It's a brisk January morning, and although the bleachers have been magically warmed for supporters, the players are still going to have a chilly day.

Tryouts will take all day. Starting at 10:00 AM, players will do individual trials. Then the players and audience will break for lunch. At 1:00 PM tryouts will resume with three small skirmishes. Players don't know which team they'll be on until minutes before the games begin.

Thorn says that he intends to post the final roster tomorrow, but he'll let everyone know if there's a delay. (What this means is that if this IC/OOC is busy and we get a lot of information from it, we can probably make a decision tomorrow. But if it's slow, we'll wait until after the lottery event to make the announcement.)

THE RULES
  • There are two stages to the tryouts:

    • Individual Tryouts: Mr. Thorn has drills set up to observe individuals on technical skill. He's looking for accuracy, speed, and skill on a broom.

      • Chasers focus on passing and scoring.
      • Beaters on accuracy and strength.
      • Keepers on defense and alertness.
      • Seekers on agility and perception.

    • Skirmishes: Thorn randomly assigns teams and has them play one another on the spot. The games last about 30-45 minutes, and there's no time to strategize. He has an eye out for teamwork and flexibility.

  • Only characters that signed up are eligible for a spot on the team.

  • There are not any scouts present. They won't arrive until the first game against Ilvermorny, and after that they will attend games regularly.

  • The results of the skirmishes are random and do not have any impact on if your character is chosen or not.

  • However, things said and done in this IC/OOC might.

  • Players will be chosen based on three major criteria:

    • ACTIVITY: Is your character social and contributing to the game and subplots? Being a presence in the game will contribute to being selected. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to be involved in the metaplot (we realize that's random-ish) or that sheer comment count will win you a spot, but characters that are accessible and engaged will get preference.

    • CHARACTER ARC: Does being selected serve the arc of the character in an interesting way? Does it sound like being on the team will create some interesting challenges? These questions will be taken into consideration as we build the team.

    • RNG: In cases where we can't choose between two characters, we'll leave it up to random chance.

  • One character will be chosen to be the Captain of the team, who will be responsible for arranging practice times and building strategy. If you have any strong opinions about your character not being captain, we will take their name off the list of potential captains.

Sy's not entirely focused this morning. He's still in Coppertale captain mode instead of team tryout mode, and part of him has serious reservations about how he's going to manage his team and play for Team Gooseberry at the same time. On the other hand, Quidditch is his career goal and there has yet to be a competition Sy won't stick his head into, so he's aiming to do well today.

He might have a reputation for being a tyrant during practices, but Sy's never asked his team to do drills or exercises he wasn't willing to do himself, for twice as long. The passing and scoring tests Thorn calls for are easy. Showing off isn't Sy's style—for all his swagger, he's not a showy flier—but he can't resist occasionally shouting "aggressive encouragement" at the other competing Chasers (at least until Thorn tells him to cut it out).

Every time he has a spare moment, he's watching to see how Reid, Roxie, Chris, Penny and Ana are doing (and Faye? I guess???). Somehow, having so much of his team here undercuts Sy's nervousness. Often, he finds himself more invested in how they're doing than worrying about his own performance. Is this what friendship feels like? No, it's just that he wants to see them fucking win because Coppertale's performance reflects on him. None of you fucking assholes better shame him today.

It might be a little surprising to some people when he stands with the Seekers and not the Chasers. Either way, Reid has a lot to prove.

He knows how to be a Seeker, but up until this year it had all seemed very simple. Which is just how Reid likes it. Winning was nice, losing was whatever. They got the cup in the end, so it hadn't mattered. He didn't give a shit.

Hadn't given a shit. Now he cares and it's possibly the worst thing in the world. He cares about winning, he cares about Sy, he cares about the team. It keeps him up at night sometimes. His head is a lot less empty now when people catch him staring out into space. But no matter how much he hates it, he can't change it, and so here he is, standing out on the pitch with his broom (a new-old broom from Sy) feeling nervous. He misses being Seeker. He wonders if that's been what's sinking Coppertale. A Chaser who doesn't care enough. A player who's always daydreaming about something besides what's right in front of him. Who would have just been cut from the team if he weren't Sy's friend. Fuck.

But outwardly Reid looks pretty normal, wearing his standard light scowl. Nerves aside, Reid is well suited for Seeker. He's quick and agile, and very independent. He's not good at putting on a show or pulling off stunts, but instead demonstrates a lot of economy in his movements. He makes risky judgements about how fast he can go, how sharp can he take that turn, how close he can skim an obstacle, etc. Reid rides a fine line where he's very hard to hit, but if he ever does miscalculate or someone lands a Bludger on him, he's clearly going to wipe out in the worst way.

When it's not his turn, he watches his teammates and friends intently. He's not much for cheering, but he's very invested, I promise.

Leo Fiori
[info]challenge
2017-01-29 04:04 pm UTC (link)

Weirdly, Leo's in a good mood. He hasn't played Quidditch in a little while now, and it's nice for him to get out of his head and be able to enter Pure Quidditch 100% Adrenaline Mode. He's gracious; wishing everyone good luck before the tryouts start. Ebonhide Quidditch members get an extra special pep talk, with reminders to play to their strengths, which Leo knows and will recite now. He can't quite divorce himself from Captain mode, either. Everyone else gets a cordial "Good luck," which people who know him can tell also consists of Leo looking them up and down to decide how tired, how distracted, how nervous they are. It's like a tic he can't quite turn off, when something competitive is involved, even if he won't be directly competing against them.

Drills are, as his team is notoriously aware, his forte and his lifeblood. He thrives off developing tricky ones to run through dozens of times until they're flawless. He hasn't had a chance to run through Thorn's hundreds of times, though. Leo's naturally very strong and by practice, also accurate. But if there's a flaw in Leo's performance, it always comes at the beginning of the drill, when he hasn't had a time or two to perfect it yet. He's much better at implementing skills when he knows what's coming. The good news is that he's a fast learner. Though Leo isn't solely interested in professional Quidditch as a career, he wants it as a backup, AND he's cringing to think what it would look like if he couldn't make the Gooseberry team as a Captain. He knows he can't afford to be at anything but 100% dedication, and he is. He goes hard. He flies like he lives, not showy, just very scarily dedicated to what he's doing at any given moment.

When he's not in the air, he watches everyone very carefully, taking in their performances here to at least use in school games. Even in the event that he doesn't make the team (which he's trying to accept as an outcome, difficult as it may be,) he wants this to be a valuable experience. Seeing people without a team to support them, alone in the air with some drills, is always a good opportunity. He stops just shy of actually taking notes.

Ana is a bundle of nerves this morning, which isn't like her. Looking around at all the other players, she questions whether she belongs there. She's the youngest keeper trying out, and without Sy to scream at her at first, she finds herself a little overwhelmed.

This doesn't last long, however.

Once she's put on her broom, those nerves vanish. She sees how many of her team are trying out, and it inexplicably gives her the boost she needs. Not only that, but Quidditch is her life. It's always been the one thing she can count on, the one thing that sets her apart from a family that ignores her. She's got this. When the drills start, she just acts like it's a game. Her natural agility on a broom shines, and it's like she's keyed into every quaffle that comes towards her. There's no knocking her off today, either. She's in the zone, thinking of how Sy will be disappointed if she lets any past. They're better than this. Their record has no bearing on skill, and Ana is still very much of the belief that they're the best team and she will play professionally as she's dreamed for so long.

Although Quinn wishes her friends good luck in the locker room, she doesn't make any of her regular attempts to provoke opponents with well-practiced taunts. She'd signed up for tryouts because she loves Quidditch and misses playing entire games, however, after topping off a few stressful weeks with spending last night brooding anonymously over what ~could have been,~ she radiates cold fucking determination as she walks onto the pitch.

She's irritated with herself and can't figure out if it's because she actually resents having come to Gooseberry (thus uprooting her home life and precluding her from a promising future in nomaj pro sports), or because she'd even consider regretting what she had set her mind to (and can't change, anyway). As someone who spends nearly all of her time working toward a career goal, the very idea that she's capable of doubting her ambitions, of getting or cold feet or whatever is happening, is unsettling.

Rattled, the Azurcrest needs to prove to herself that she's still capable of accomplishing something athletic, that she can still succeed even when the task isn't to regurgitate a textbook.

It's a cliché of the worst kind but today it's accurate as hell: she's here to win.

The staggering force behind Quinn's shots makes her strength clear (#armday, motherfuckers) and each hit is precise. She's obviously a talented flier in general—or else she would never have made a team in the first place—but she isn't a Talented Flier. She's fast and agile enough, but if she's going to be 'one with' anything, that connection's reserved for her bat.

Despite her effectiveness, there's something about her technique and drive together that makes every hit seem like it has the potential to become much more savage, even uncontrolled. While she'd argue that it's "just part of the sport!," the severity with which she hammers Bludgers into targets points to something further back than that — to onlookers especially well-versed in either Quinn or Quidditch, it may even be unnerving.

2017-01-29 04:45 pm UTC (link)
Ulysses isn't in the pro-Quidditch track or anything like that, but boy, does he want to make this team. Seriously, there are so many layers of his bullshit tied up in this try-out that it's basically a feelings croissant. #1: he used to play on the Ilvermorny team, back when everyone thought he was a naive baby butterfly and now he's got to show his old classmates that actually, he's hot shit now. #2: if Clem gets a spot and he doesn't, he'll have to take a melodramatic swan dive off the divination tower. #3: if he's not good at Quidditch, what is he good at??? #4: a hot girl wished him luck, holy shit. Time to prove he's a winner.

Suffice it to say, he's having palpitations. This whole thing is a war between skill/practice and nerves. One the one hand, one can't play on the Ebonhide team without developing a proficiency at and, dare I say it, Stockholmian fondness for, drills. This stuff is second nature now. On the other... Ulysses has a lot of strengths on the pitch, but recovering from mistakes isn't one of them. A few impressive throws at the outset will drive up his confidence and let him relax, have fun, and show his stuff. One dumb error, though, could spiral into several. It's up to Lady Luck to decide which way things will tip. In general, Ulysses shines when he's being challenged. He's got sticky fingers and good speed on the broom; the tough tosses let him show that off. Easy stuff, he's more likely to overthink and fumble.

When he isn't in the air, Ulysses is sitting off sides, watching the others intently, his right leg bouncing. Every so often he turns, and glances quickly back at the audience. When he sees his people (ex: Casper and oh wow, Kenzie) he gives an almost-shy little wave.

Chris is fucking focused today. He may or may not have brought his rock with him but he's clearly bouncing on the heels of his feet with barely contained energy. Instead of deterring him, the anonymous post the night before serves only to fuel him. He plans on reminding anybody that doubts coppertale that they're still here.

He hasn't had to legitimately try out since he made first string the year before, but instead of feeling nervous, he feels exhilarated. This is terrifying and more important than he can stand to think about and he's spent weeks training extra for this but he feels exhilarated.

For the first time since Ty gave him his broom, Chris brings it with him. He hasn't been using it for practices, even the ones he's done with Levi. While in the air, Chris focuses on his actual abilities instead of savagery. He focuses on hitting the targets head on with staggering strength. He isn't a flashy flyer and he doesn't have any tricks outside of dodging bludgers but he's agile and fast, the bat an extension of his arm that may move his body with every hard swing but never actually moves his broom, making every hit look more fluid than it actually is.

While on the ground, he's focused on the rest of his team trying out. He doesn't feel nervous for them. He knows what they're all capable of. He's got faith in them. But outside of his team, his gaze might be straying toward Levi to see how well he's doing too.

Only after try outs have ended does he realize that he didn't reach for his rock once because he's got this. Nothing makes him feel more alive than quidditch.

Roxanne Barringer
[info]tightwire
2017-01-29 04:50 pm UTC (link)
Roxie's in a good mood today. While she isn't the most flashy of her family members by far, there's still something about a crowd that energizes her. She's bouncing easily on her toes and grinning before things even get started, her hair already unraveled more than halfway out of what had probably been a french braid. At one point in time that isn't this one. She doesn't seem particularly bothered by it.

Her eyes light up when Thorn says they're doing drills. People might think that Sy demands practice but, honestly, Roxanne loves practice. Repetition. (She puts in hours of it on her own - stretches, balance, posture, strength and conditioning - when they're off the pitch.) Her accuracy probably pales slightly in comparison to some of the other competitors, but she more than has the strength to back the moves up. And if there's one thing that can be said for her playing style, it's that she comes by her particular brand of insanity honestly - and that, if she's upside-down, it's because whatever she was doing is genuinely easier for her to do when upside-down. Not because she's trying to show off.

She's going to play hard, but this is a different beast than a Coppertale game and she's mostly out to enjoy herself while playing hard. There are people here that want to play professionally and she respects that. It doesn't mean that she'll put in any less of an effort than she normally would, but a Barringer doesn't step on toes. She doesn't mind playing with new people, either - though she shoots a wide grin at Sy and sticks her tongue out at Chris playfully when the teams are selected. (And, hey. Penny gets to exorcise her hatred for her in a constructive manner for once! Good for her. Banner day and all that.)

She's way more enthusiastic in support of her teammates than anything else, spending her down time watching them play and knocking shoulders supportively when the opportunity arises. They look good out there.

Jeffy's in a great mood, you guys. I mean, when is Jeffy not in a great mood is the real question here, but he's just so excited. He gets to play Quidditch with so many awesome people today!! He's never been very good at the whole actual rivalry part of sports, so getting to play with new people just means this is the best time ever, this is so much fun, why don't they do this more often???

In the air, he's enthusiastic and has so much energy. It might actually be too much energy? He's kind of easily distracted by what other people are doing, but he's like super fast, and when he throws the Quaffle it might be way harder than he thought he was throwing it, which is great for scoring but not so great when you're just trying to casually pass to a teammate. His accuracy is pretty good, but he's not a very precise player, more of a "try your best and everything will be fine" kind of player.

When he's on the ground he's so excited to cheer on literally everyone. It doesn't matter if you're on his team or one of his friends or not, today they're all on the same team.

Wilde
[info]destructobot
2017-01-29 05:32 pm UTC (link)
As to be expected, Wilde's taking this incredibly seriously. He hasn't had the amount of practice he'd like to have, but Leo's advice is echoing in his mind as he enters the field.

He's spent the morning in total silence, running through various ideas and mantras in his mind: it doesn't matter that you're reserve, you're still good, you can still do this if you really want it. On the whole, he's -- very calm. Weirdly calm, maybe? He barely says hello to anyone and even manages to ignore Chris! Wow! He does give polite greetings to Avery and Susana before the start of things, though.

As a whole, Wilde's play style as Keeper is very reflective of the above. He's always been like this: gets onto the pitch, transforms into a zen automaton. :u It's difficult to break his focus or knock him around, and he doesn't seem to register any cheers or jeering, or really much of anything but the task at hand. Predictably, too, he pull off some pretty risky/weird maneuvers when tested (he's a skater, he's not scared of falling).

After his tryout is through he watches everyone else with detached interest. HIs energy is a little more nervous now.

Thorn says this won't be a make or break deal for their Quid careers? Thorn is obviously lying to make them feel better. How can you expect to make it onto a professional team if you can't even make it onto a high school team? Half these kids aren't even going out for professionals and if they make it and you don't, it's a strong indicator that you're trash.

Despite this very black and white view, Levi is excited and confident. He believes he has an advantage over the other players because Azurcrest has been practicing for their upcoming game and Levi has been squeezing solo practices in nearly every evening since the GvI tryouts were announced. Only recently has he been practicing dodging Chris's bludgers in the veil of night as well.

Levi is known for showboating for the audience, because he believes an important part of the Chaser's role is to enthrall the crowd to keep them engaged in the game, but there's not much of an audience to entertain. He knows Thorn isn't looking for neato broom tricks and near-misses with bludgers to keep people on the edge of their seats; he's looking to see how well these kids perform their roles. There's still a bit of cocky, showy flair as he dodges bludgers aimed at him (he can't help it!!) but there are no mid-air loopty loops or spinning divebombs for this individual tryout. The aerobatics are almost entirely cut out so Levi can show Thorn what he's really capable of.

But Levi knows he's not fooling Thorn. Levi is a performer and those aerobatics are going to make a reappearance in the real game to show off the splendor of Gooseberry and how much more star quality their team has versus the shitty public school. ... If he makes it there.

Oh boy.

Z is exhausted. She's spread thin. She did, however, spend most of yesterday resting and flying around on the pitch when it was free, getting herself back into the spirit and swing of things. She feels ready, but she also feels like a loaded spring; today her play is perhaps slightly more aggressive than usual, movements less refined, but in a way that's almost an improvement. It adds to her alertness and ups the quickness of her responses. She throws the quaffle like it's a grenade, and rarely misses.

With that, though, she's used to playing very much as part of a team. Today her unstoppable girl-squad is nowhere to be found, and that makes the start of her solo tryout a little shaky; it's obvious that she has skills, but she has a natural tendency to think as One of Three and it shows. Towards the end of the try-out, though, she comes into her own a bit and even starts showing off here and there. She's quite a zippy flyer.

When she's not flying, she's saying hello to people and doling out hugs. She can also be heard audibly cheering for other players, including direct competition. This is supposed to be a game. There are so many other things she's supposed to care about and be doing with her life instead, but something about today feels really fun and special. She's keyed into that and maybe slightly emotional over it: this could be the first real day of someone's career, someone's future.

Jaime is on today. He had a fantastic time of it last night in terms of the anonymous post so he’s come to the pitch peppy and bright-eyed and ready. He gives cheerful words of encouragement to anyone he sees, teammate or not, and he pretty much winks at every girl he comes in contact with. Today is the best, and he’s happy to let everyone around him know that.

All of this excitability is channeled quite well into his playing, luckily, and doesn’t serve as too much of a distraction. He’s only a bit of a ham today with his flying and is definitely doing his best. His broomwork is solid and focused, his Quaffle handling is steady and pretty accurate, and there’s not a sign of any sort of nervousness in his form at all. He’s just happy and natural on his broom. While he is trying hard, getting on this team isn't do-or-die for him so he's far from aggressively trying to be the best. He wants this, but he also knows that some of his classmates want it more; he’s just going to give it his all without running himself ragged and appreciate that he gets to try out in the first place.

When he’s not playing he watches, he cheers, he high fives. He's especially attentive to the tryouts of other Azurcrest players along with Reid (and also maybe Chris a little).

Clem's in a surprisingly chipper and laid-back mood this morning. She's been looking forward to these try-outs since the games were announced, and she's not too stressed about making the team... because it hasn't occurred to her that she might not make the team. She's full of herself like that.

She's having a good time and yells encouragement at her friends as they hit the pitch. She takes a good ten minutes to calm down and settle into what she's doing. Drills are not her favorite thing in the world, and Leo makes them do a lot of them in Ebonhide practice. She really hates repetition, and gets bored easily. The challenge of actually playing skilled, unpredictable opponents is what she enjoys most about Quidditch.

So even though she eventually buckles down and focuses, she's still riding the line between being serious and having fun. For the most part she still manages to complete the drills in a timely, efficient fashion. She's better at scoring than she is at passing, and then better at throwing passes than she is at catching them. She fumbles the ball a handful of times catching passes, and makes a few absolutely bullshit, barely-caught-that catches on top of that ("wow, you barely pulled that off" is her most received feedback, honestly).

She's still high-energy at lunch, and offers whoever's willing to sit with her comprehensive feedback on their individual tryouts. It's after lunch that her usual competitiveness kicks back in. Now there's winning to do.

Penelope Vargas
[info]sneakoscoped
2017-01-29 11:28 pm UTC (link)
She's determined. There's no other word for her mood. Penelope has been practicing so hard, though almost entirely alone, and feels absolutely ready to take it on. There was never an issue with her skill - she was always a good Seeker, it was her shit ass attitude that kept her off the team. But being out of practice for so long has definitely taken its toll - after the first game, she's lost all the confidence she had carried in with her.

Before and after, she doesn't really talk to anyone. She's focused, she's doing her best to be a good team player. She tries to encourage her team after the first game, but she doesn't do a good job. You can tell her spirits are really down.

This meant the world to her.

And then after she loses the second game, Penelope knows there's no hope. She had one job, and she blew it both times. Both games she was unable to get the snitch over the other seekers and knew the losses were entirely her fault. Penelope can't even handle it - after apologizing profusely she just leaves in tears.

Avery is in a great mood. She's excited to play, and somehow even more excited to play in the dynamic of a random team. She's really looking forward to the new team dynamics and the atmosphere more than playing, though she loves Quidditch as well.

If no one else does - and even if someone does, to be honest - Avery steps up to be "captain" of the impromptu team almost immediately. She has no issue stepping up and since she has been captain of her team for over a year, she's ready to take on the responsibility. As a captain, of course, Avery is kind and encouraging more than anything else. She has some good strategies to give in the incredibly short amount of time they have, but mostly she just makes sure to give each person a compliment on their play-style, having observed so many of them play herself.

But she definitely has her game face on!

Ree is not stressing over this. Quidditch is a game. Games are meant to be fun. Yes? So why get so worked up about it, darlings? She's cheery and chipper- maybe annoyingly so- and full of energy, excited rather than worried about the whole thing.

That being said, once she's up in the air, she's all focus. Quidditch is a game, sure, but one she's pretty good at. She's not going to be the shining star of the day, by any means, but energy and excitement carry into the sky and she's on top of the bludgers.

Etta is surprised to see Reid here for Seeker tryouts, but then again it's not like he's really taken to being a Chaser, is it? As for Penelope, Etta knows the other girl is a decent Seeker, but reserves never have the same level of experience even if they can match you on skill. So, she's not worried by the competition. She's here to have fun, and do what she does best, and she's practically bouncing on her heels as she waits for her turn to get in the air.

Doing drills that someone else has organised feels nice, kind of like how it was when Etta's big sister was captain and she didn't have to worry about the organisational and strategy side of Quidditch. The repetition allows Etta to fall into a zone of pure concentration, and that feeling of being ~one with her broom~ is glorious. For a while she actually forgets she's trying out for a team, as her goal becomes to beat her own personal bests and fly better than she did the last time.

When she finally lands, she's high on the endorphins that come with a successful workout. It wasn't perfect, but when she messed up she just focused on getting it right the next time, and she's happy with her performance. She's also really proud of how her friends and teammates flew today. No matter who ends up on the final team, they are going to kick ass.
