TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

This is the day many of Gooseberry's Quidditch players have been waiting for. The mood is tense, as a lot of the participants have pinned a great deal on making this team. Thorn repeatedly tries to assure the athletes that this won't be a make or break deal for their Quidditch career, but a lot of his words fall on deaf ears. It's a brisk January morning, and although the bleachers have been magically warmed for supporters, the players are still going to have a chilly day.

Tryouts will take all day. Starting at 10:00 AM, players will do individual trials. Then the players and audience will break for lunch. At 1:00 PM tryouts will resume with three small skirmishes. Players don't know which team they'll be on until minutes before the games begin.

Thorn says that he intends to post the final roster tomorrow, but he'll let everyone know if there's a delay. (What this means is that if this IC/OOC is busy and we get a lot of information from it, we can probably make a decision tomorrow. But if it's slow, we'll wait until after the lottery event to make the announcement.)

THE RULES
  • There are two stages to the tryouts:

    • Individual Tryouts: Mr. Thorn has drills set up to observe individuals on technical skill. He's looking for accuracy, speed, and skill on a broom.

      • Chasers focus on passing and scoring.
      • Beaters on accuracy and strength.
      • Keepers on defense and alertness.
      • Seekers on agility and perception.

    • Skirmishes: Thorn randomly assigns teams and has them play one another on the spot. The games last about 30-45 minutes, and there's no time to strategize. He has an eye out for teamwork and flexibility.

  • Only characters that signed up are eligible for a spot on the team.

  • There are not any scouts present. They won't arrive until the first game against Ilvermorny, and after that they will attend games regularly.

  • The results of the skirmishes are random and do not have any impact on if your character is chosen or not.

  • However, things said and done in this IC/OOC might.

  • Players will be chosen based on three major criteria:

    • ACTIVITY: Is your character social and contributing to the game and subplots? Being a presence in the game will contribute to being selected. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to be involved in the metaplot (we realize that's random-ish) or that sheer comment count will win you a spot, but characters that are accessible and engaged will get preference.

    • CHARACTER ARC: Does being selected serve the arc of the character in an interesting way? Does it sound like being on the team will create some interesting challenges? These questions will be taken into consideration as we build the team.

    • RNG: In cases where we can't choose between two characters, we'll leave it up to random chance.

  • One character will be chosen to be the Captain of the team, who will be responsible for arranging practice times and building strategy. If you have any strong opinions about your character not being captain, we will take their name off the list of potential captains.

Cricket doesn't understand the appeal of competitive sport, in general, and she certainly doesn't understand why anyone would want to zoom around in the freezing cold while dodging projectiles, but if it makes Ulysses happy ... so be it. She's a little resentful that she felt obligated to waste her Saturday evening being nice to people she doesn't really like and now feels obligated to spend her Sunday afternoon watching a game she doesn't really enjoy, but she arrives at the pitch bright and early with a smile on her face, nonetheless. While she is tempted to sit off by herself in a relatively quiet corner of the stands, she ultimately decides to sit with her fellow Ebonhides.

During the majority of the independent tryouts, she has her nose in a book but sets it aside to cheer for her friends and her darling baby bro. The skirmishes capture her attention a bit more. She looks to Vee and Mina for cues on when she's meant to clap and when she's meant to 'ooooh!' appreciatively. Ulysses gets the loudest cheers of all, regardless of whether or not he is performing well, though he elicits more shrieks of terror from his big sis than anything else.

Maggie doesn't really like or understand Quidditch, but she's here to support her Ebonhide children and Cricket, who's obligated to be here. Maggie brought a large thermos with hot chocolate inside to share with Cricket. Hopefully, it makes sitting in the freezing cold through these tryouts a bit more tolerable.

She cheers for her Ebonhides whenever they do a particularly impressive thing (everything seems particularly impressive, so she's cheering even when the crowd is silent) but she definitely favors Uly and his team because... It's Ulybear.

"AHHH! ULY!!! YOU'RE SO TALENTED!!!!!" she calls out and waves enthusiastically before his individual tryout even begins.

"JEEZ, MAGGIE, RELAX ABOUT IT. I KNOW." Ulysses goes bright pink, because he's still kind of tense and this feels like having his mom there. But at this point she's spent enough time around him to know that he loves her and appreciates her support. He waves back.

It does make him happy, honestly. Thank you, Cricket. Ulysses chills out significantly when he sees her in the crowd... if just because he gets distracted showing off some daring and idiotic stunt just to make her yelp. Probably something really dumb, like, idk, pretending to leap off his broom mid-air, only to catch himself at the last minute. You can expect a giant, shit-eating grin if he manages to scare/impress her.

Cricket does not care for these antics! After a particularly believable feigned fall, she jumps to her feet and lunges to rush toward the pitch before realizing it was just a stunt. "CUT IT OUT!" she hollers at him, face red with embarrassment. She petulantly refuses to clap for him for the next few minutes, but it's not long before her resolve breaks and she's back to WOOOO girling!

Pulling Cricket's pigtails is just as fun as it was when they were 5... as long as she forgives him straight away, of course. Which she always does, so it's okay. He loves you! Be impressed!
