TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

This is the day many of Gooseberry's Quidditch players have been waiting for. The mood is tense, as a lot of the participants have pinned a great deal on making this team. Thorn repeatedly tries to assure the athletes that this won't be a make or break deal for their Quidditch career, but a lot of his words fall on deaf ears. It's a brisk January morning, and although the bleachers have been magically warmed for supporters, the players are still going to have a chilly day.

Tryouts will take all day. Starting at 10:00 AM, players will do individual trials. Then the players and audience will break for lunch. At 1:00 PM tryouts will resume with three small skirmishes. Players don't know which team they'll be on until minutes before the games begin.

Thorn says that he intends to post the final roster tomorrow, but he'll let everyone know if there's a delay. (What this means is that if this IC/OOC is busy and we get a lot of information from it, we can probably make a decision tomorrow. But if it's slow, we'll wait until after the lottery event to make the announcement.)

THE RULES

There are two stages to the tryouts:
- Individual Tryouts: Mr. Thorn has drills set up to observe individuals on technical skill. He's looking for accuracy, speed, and skill on a broom.
  - Chasers focus on passing and scoring.
  - Beaters on accuracy and strength.
  - Keepers on defense and alertness.
  - Seekers on agility and perception.
- Skirmishes: Thorn randomly assigns teams and has them play one another on the spot. The games last about 30-45 minutes, and there's no time to strategize. He has an eye out for teamwork and flexibility.
Only characters that signed up are eligible for a spot on the team.

There are not any scouts present. They won't arrive until the first game against Ilvermorny, and after that they will attend games regularly.

The results of the skirmishes are random and do not have any impact on if your character is chosen or not.

However, things said and done in this IC/OOC might.

Players will be chosen based on three major criteria:
- ACTIVITY: Is your character social and contributing to the game and subplots? Being a presence in the game will contribute to being selected. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to be involved in the metaplot (we realize that's random-ish) or that sheer comment count will win you a spot, but characters that are accessible and engaged will get preference.
- CHARACTER ARC: Does being selected serve the arc of the character in an interesting way? Does it sound like being on the team will create some interesting challenges? These questions will be taken into consideration as we build the team.
- RNG: In cases where we can't choose between two characters, we'll leave it up to random chance.
One character will be chosen to be the Captain of the team, who will be responsible for arranging practice times and building strategy. If you have any strong opinions about your character not being captain, we will take their name off the list of potential captains.

Rafael has friends and Coppertales trying out today, but there's one particular Ebonhide whose success he's especially invested in. Rafael's dressed in his normal Coppertale colors, but he has a single purple crocus (taken from the greenhouse) pinned to his coat. For all of Rafael's severity and the noise he makes about how practical he is, he'll never escape his mile wide romantic streak.

	There's only two Ribbonfins competing today, but they're Z and Avery, so YES OF COURSE Ravi's here in green and copper to support them. He's sitting beside Rafael, and will also cheer for Leo, Levi, Etta, Quinn and Regan, and praise them afterwards for how well they flew. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Can Ty crash this party? In high spirits today, Rafael and Ravi will have to put up with a very energetic (even for him) Ty as he cheers, shouts, whistles, and otherwise encourages those trying out. 	Sun-mi's a cheerleader and Z's her roomie so she is totally huddled up with this group as well. Etta, Z, and Leo get her loudest cheers, but she's quick to make noise whenever someone does something exciting. (Reply to this) (Parent)

	After a performance he isn't quite sure of, Leo's really glad to be coming back to the stands to that flower. He couldn't focus too much on Rafael during the tryouts, but makes sure to catch him afterward to thank him for being there. He helped. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

When Leo comes up to Rafael, he pulls him in close immediately. He insists upon complimenting how well Leo did while he takes the flower off his own coat and pins it to Leo's Quidditch uniform. If Rafael were in charge of making the roster, Leo would clearly be on it. Is he biased? Maybe. But he's also right.

"And your team members were performing well, too," he adds. "See? You have good leadership skills. Didn't I tell you?"

Leo can take the compliments, but he's nervous. The team he was on lost twice. He hates what that implies, even if he knows, at some level, that he can't carry a team on his own. (He only knows that on about half a level.) But it's done now, and it's not going to help to obsess about it until the roster's posted. He smiles despite himself at the flower on his uniform, and kisses Rafael's forehead in a wordless show of gratitude.

"They did do well. Didn't they." There's a fondness and pride in that, because it's easier to focus on. "I should know by now you're always right."

"You are catching on," Rafael teases back. He feels more centered around Leo, and his company is a welcome reprieve from any heavier thoughts. They don't need to talk about it. He leans in a little more so their foreheads touch. Now that they're this close, he speaks more quietly. "You must be proud. The team will probably be all Ebonhides. Maybe some Coppertales."

Leo steps close, gladly. He's been worried about Rafael since before last night. It's been another hard week. Again. He doesn't know how to help, other than what he's doing now. So he tries by combing his fingers through Rafael's hair and holding him, smiling more gently than he normally would in public. "I'm proud. But I don't want to jinx it. I could've done better." (He resolutely keeps himself from launching into the ways how.) "Coppertales looked really good today. Everyone did."

"You looked the best," Rafael murmurs, tilting his head into Leo's touch. If they weren't in public, he would be shameless. There's a lot that Rafael is willing to do even with prying eyes, though. He's always thinking about who's watching, and then dismissing them immediately. More than ever, he thinks 'This just a small bubble full of people whose names we ain't gonna remember one day.'

"You feel tense," he ventures cautiously. Usually he would ignore the signs, but today... He's sad, he's frustrated, but Leo can make all of that seem very, very far away.

The observation surprises Leo. This is usually territory they stay away from. That he does, anyway. It's second nature to present himself as invulnerable. The more surprising part is that he doesn't grow more nervous or shy away. Truth is easy this close to Rafael. "It's hard to forget the mistakes I made. And what they could mean. Even if no one else saw." His voice is barely a murmur, no one will hear, it's fine. "It's better now."

All of that is true. He lets his head drop, so that he can speak directly onto Rafael's jaw. One truth has made him bold enough to ask for one too, but he keeps it open enough. "And you? How are you."
