TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

This is the day many of Gooseberry's Quidditch players have been waiting for. The mood is tense, as a lot of the participants have pinned a great deal on making this team. Thorn repeatedly tries to assure the athletes that this won't be a make or break deal for their Quidditch career, but a lot of his words fall on deaf ears. It's a brisk January morning, and although the bleachers have been magically warmed for supporters, the players are still going to have a chilly day.

Tryouts will take all day. Starting at 10:00 AM, players will do individual trials. Then the players and audience will break for lunch. At 1:00 PM tryouts will resume with three small skirmishes. Players don't know which team they'll be on until minutes before the games begin.

Thorn says that he intends to post the final roster tomorrow, but he'll let everyone know if there's a delay. (What this means is that if this IC/OOC is busy and we get a lot of information from it, we can probably make a decision tomorrow. But if it's slow, we'll wait until after the lottery event to make the announcement.)

THE RULES
  • There are two stages to the tryouts:

    • Individual Tryouts: Mr. Thorn has drills set up to observe individuals on technical skill. He's looking for accuracy, speed, and skill on a broom.

      • Chasers focus on passing and scoring.
      • Beaters on accuracy and strength.
      • Keepers on defense and alertness.
      • Seekers on agility and perception.

    • Skirmishes: Thorn randomly assigns teams and has them play one another on the spot. The games last about 30-45 minutes, and there's no time to strategize. He has an eye out for teamwork and flexibility.

  • Only characters that signed up are eligible for a spot on the team.

  • There are not any scouts present. They won't arrive until the first game against Ilvermorny, and after that they will attend games regularly.

  • The results of the skirmishes are random and do not have any impact on if your character is chosen or not.

  • However, things said and done in this IC/OOC might.

  • Players will be chosen based on three major criteria:

    • ACTIVITY: Is your character social and contributing to the game and subplots? Being a presence in the game will contribute to being selected. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to be involved in the metaplot (we realize that's random-ish) or that sheer comment count will win you a spot, but characters that are accessible and engaged will get preference.

    • CHARACTER ARC: Does being selected serve the arc of the character in an interesting way? Does it sound like being on the team will create some interesting challenges? These questions will be taken into consideration as we build the team.

    • RNG: In cases where we can't choose between two characters, we'll leave it up to random chance.

  • One character will be chosen to be the Captain of the team, who will be responsible for arranging practice times and building strategy. If you have any strong opinions about your character not being captain, we will take their name off the list of potential captains.

Leo has to swallow the urge to boss this team around REALLY HARD because there's a lot of sophomores involved. He knows Ree is a strong Beater, and talks to her a little about his strategies (aka shouts as they fly) so she knows what he's doing. He goes after Chasers, which apparently only kind of works, and is really not afraid to manipulate his knowledge of how they fly, especially Clem, who is on his team.

He is deeply unhappy at the results of this skirmish, obviously, but tries to shake it off.

Jeffy still thinks Leo did great. Jeffy gives Leo a pat on the back and acts like they just won.

THANK YOU JEFFY. Leo thinks he did great too and tells him this!

Well actually I should probably have added he totally did NOT suppress the Captain urge to give a very brief pep talk between skirmishes. You guys are awesome and they can still do this. Go fight win.

You literally could not ask for a better pep talk recipient. Jeffy nods and grins and fist pumps like, "YEAH MAN, go fight win!!"

It's a good, solid hit that takes the wind out of her, but she laughs it off and keeps playing. Plus, it was a freakin' awesome hit, so she doesn't even hold it against him personally.

(Except for approximately five minutes that night at dinner, when she flops down next to him at his table and loudly laments that she's been "BETRAYED, BY THE VERY PERSON I TRUSTED MOST".)

For the record, Micah was not trying out for Team Gooseberry, he just showed up to support Jeffy and got roped into this??? He doesn't even play Chaser??? Some of his time in the air was spent going JEFFY YOU LOOK SO GOOD JEFFY and WHO'S THAT BABELICIOUS BEATER OH IT'S REE HOBBS. Also cheering for Jaime, Sofia and Etta on the opposing team.

Look, he can't help it that Azurcrests are just naturally more attractive.

Every time Micah yells his name, Jeffy whips around and waves at him. This is not how you stay focused in a game, Jefferson.

Jeffy loves teamwork, and he's the exact opposite of a ball hog. He actually probably passes it to other people more than is entirely necessary, considering Micah's not even trying out for the team, but EVERYONE NEEDS A CHANCE TO PLAY, OKAY.

He's not the best at dodging Bludgers, mostly because he doesn't think to look up and keep track of the Beaters and Bludgers and really anyone but the Chasers and opposing Keeper.

And when they lose? HE DGAF, THIS WAS GREAT, HIGH FIVES ALL AROUND, LET'S GET READY FOR THE NEXT SKIRMISH!!!

Roxie would like to think that she's kind of getting the hang of this whole 'working with new and different people' thing by the time the second skirmish starts up. Well enough, at least. She's been paying attention to the other people on her team and trying to work with what they're doing to the best of her ability.

And these quick and dirty games have a definite appeal. Everyone does well. It's like the whole game bottled up and concentrated. (And, good lord, the entire Sophomore class is offensively adorable.)

So her good mood continues unabated - and only really improves when they win this time around.

Losing the snitch to Etta destroys Penny and any confidence she had going into this.

Oh no. :( Etta didn't even notice Penny's reaction, but if she had she would've been torn between feeling kinda bad, and being all WOMAN UP, PENNY. YOU GOTTA LEARN HOW TO TAKE A LOSS.

Five goals?! Ana is definitely unhappy with her performance in this. She feels like she should have been better prepared, and is determined to make up for it in the next match. It's just residual nerves. They'll get them next time!

YASSSS. Good job, Etta. Her manoeuvres were a lot more precise in this game, and she pulls off an impressive dive to catch the Snitch. She's also pleased that her team scored more goals this time round -- clearly they just needed to get in a ~practice game~ first!

Now, do the non-Azurcrests on this team know that the accepted response to winning is a massive collision airborne group hug?!
