TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

This is the day many of Gooseberry's Quidditch players have been waiting for. The mood is tense, as a lot of the participants have pinned a great deal on making this team. Thorn repeatedly tries to assure the athletes that this won't be a make or break deal for their Quidditch career, but a lot of his words fall on deaf ears. It's a brisk January morning, and although the bleachers have been magically warmed for supporters, the players are still going to have a chilly day.

Tryouts will take all day. Starting at 10:00 AM, players will do individual trials. Then the players and audience will break for lunch. At 1:00 PM tryouts will resume with three small skirmishes. Players don't know which team they'll be on until minutes before the games begin.

Thorn says that he intends to post the final roster tomorrow, but he'll let everyone know if there's a delay. (What this means is that if this IC/OOC is busy and we get a lot of information from it, we can probably make a decision tomorrow. But if it's slow, we'll wait until after the lottery event to make the announcement.)

THE RULES
  • There are two stages to the tryouts:

    • Individual Tryouts: Mr. Thorn has drills set up to observe individuals on technical skill. He's looking for accuracy, speed, and skill on a broom.

      • Chasers focus on passing and scoring.
      • Beaters on accuracy and strength.
      • Keepers on defense and alertness.
      • Seekers on agility and perception.

    • Skirmishes: Thorn randomly assigns teams and has them play one another on the spot. The games last about 30-45 minutes, and there's no time to strategize. He has an eye out for teamwork and flexibility.

  • Only characters that signed up are eligible for a spot on the team.

  • There are not any scouts present. They won't arrive until the first game against Ilvermorny, and after that they will attend games regularly.

  • The results of the skirmishes are random and do not have any impact on if your character is chosen or not.

  • However, things said and done in this IC/OOC might.

  • Players will be chosen based on three major criteria:

    • ACTIVITY: Is your character social and contributing to the game and subplots? Being a presence in the game will contribute to being selected. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to be involved in the metaplot (we realize that's random-ish) or that sheer comment count will win you a spot, but characters that are accessible and engaged will get preference.

    • CHARACTER ARC: Does being selected serve the arc of the character in an interesting way? Does it sound like being on the team will create some interesting challenges? These questions will be taken into consideration as we build the team.

    • RNG: In cases where we can't choose between two characters, we'll leave it up to random chance.

  • One character will be chosen to be the Captain of the team, who will be responsible for arranging practice times and building strategy. If you have any strong opinions about your character not being captain, we will take their name off the list of potential captains.

If no one stops him, Sy is taking charge of this Chaser team. I say this and then I actually looked at the results. Oh. Well. This is possibly why they don't do so hot? Jesus Christ, Sy. GIVE UP THE REINS TO SOMEONE ELSE SOMETIME.

On the other hand, Team #2 doesn't get that far ahead either, so I'm going to say these teams were evenly matched!!!

Clementine is willing to entertain this for exactly the amount of time it takes them to lose. Come on, Sy. First beer pong, now this.

BY ONE GOAL DECOURT

No, no. She's right. This is fuckin unacceptable. (He can see Rosy in the stands, jotting down his failures today.) If Team #1 hadn't won the next game, Sy was going to challenge Clem to a fight just to redeem himself.

Okay but if no one stops him Chris takes the reins of the team because he's still in captain hockey mode and there's no Sy here to fall back on. Since there's no time for strategy Chris actually just recites people's strengths back to them in a brief pep talk and tells them to have fun and actually smiles because apparently despite his defense of Sy on the anon post he believes in positive morale too?

But Chris plays as brutally in these games as he does for coppertale. Only better because he knows all of Sy's and Roxie's weaknesses too.

This is a good chance to watch Etta though, in case they decide to cut her off at the knees next quidditch game.

Since ribbonfin is currently in lead for the cup (and Chris is friends with Avery) Chris acknowledged and respects her ability to captain. Even though these try outs are important, he's no where near as bullheaded as he usually is.

Somehow these coppertales ended up on the encouraging friendship team.

Sy respects any time Chris manages to press one of his weaknesses to almost nail him with a Bludger. And by respect I mean Sy shouts "AIM BETTER NEXT TIME, YOU FUCKIN' ASSHOLE" at him which Chris will understand to be the utmost sign of respect anyway.

Chris does. He sees your praise Sy.

Near the end there almost immediately after one of those comments, it would be great if Chris could follow it up by aiming better next time and hitting Sy

Which in Chris's world just means 'I hear you boss and I'm currently improving my aim based on your advice' but really comes out as 'HOW YOU LIKE THEM APPLES MOTHERFUCKER'

For all that Ulysses loves a slaughter, this skirmish might be his favorite game in a while. The teams are perfectly matched, and it's satisfying as all get-out. Team 1 keeps him on his toes and it brings out the best in him; it's not "showing off" if the other team forces you to bring your A game.

To win by 10 in the end feels oh-so-good, and he very gamely offers his hand to the LOSERS other team at the end, grinning sunnily the whole time. How ya like them apples, Decourt?

That was a good start. No, that was a great damn start. C'mon. That was well-matched and intense and close as all hell. Roxie's breath is slightly labored and the grin on her face has only widened and gone a little wild around the edges by the time the first bout is up.

And she may or may not have laughed loud enough to be heard if when Chris lobbed a Bludger at her head the first time.

Chris may have accidentally complimented her when she dodged the bludger tho

Like Chris hits a bludger hard at Roxie and Roxie dodges and Chris just shouts 'GOOD FORM'

Quinn's excitement over what she considers a near-ideal roster does nothing except improve her game because beating Bludgers alongside Chris is literally a dream come true. On top of the whole 'besties' thing, they've spent what may be hundreds of hours discussing and watching one another's games, and their years of hockey camaraderie has granted them near-ESP levels of athletic familiarity. They're Thing 1 and Thing 2 except they've traded the red onesies for Quidditch robes.

All of this is to say that, despite never having played together, they rarely need to communicate in the air.

Instead, they take cues from each other based on things like how they're set on their broom, which direction they're headed, and what their body language communicates about their intent. Any directions that do have to be hollered between them are no longer than a word or two and immediately understood by the other. Even when it's "FUCK!", because by golly was that "FUCK!" ever nuanced!

For all her successes in the individual tryouts segment, her weaknesses become apparent in the organized skirmishes. When she hits opponents with Bludgers she tries to outright incapacitate them instead of inconvenience them, which means that her shots can take longer to line up and execute than is ideal. 'Beaters as a distraction' is more or less a foreign concept to Quinn. Despite all of this, she's effective and she's out for blood.

Levi gives a pleased laugh at their team assignment. Chris, Reid, Quinn, and baby Quayle? Oh boy, oh boy! He claps Reid on the back and squeezes his shoulder before leaning in to sing a little, "Reunited and it feels so good~!" This is going to be GREAT. The BEST!!

"Let's fucking slaughter them," he gushes oh-so-jovially before they take to the air.

This team feels like he's playing with friends because... well, he is. He was more serious-minded during the individual trial, but his smile is more relaxed and he looks like he's genuinely having fun during this game. There's a bit of aerobatics whenever he whizzes past Jaime or dodges one of Sofia's bludgers, but he's still focused on showing Thorn his best side and he makes every effort to pass the Quaffle to his teammates (easy!!) and score goals (not as easy!!).

The ten point difference isn't exactly a slaughter, but Levi is no less exuberant about it. Uly and Faye get treated to some sweaty hugs and showered in praise before he skips over to pal around with Chris and Quinn.

"OOOH, THAT BEATER SYNERGY~!"

Now that they're done with individual tryouts, Reid's less tense... but after not getting the snitch that game he's back on guard. This was a taste of going up against Gray, and just like Sy ordered, Reid's mind is still on the February game. The Seeker impasse doesn't do much to make him feel like he's 'got this' as much as he keeps telling Sy he's 'got this'.

Jaime is very excited for the skirmishes! He's a true team player and makes an effort to follow Sy's instructions (even if it onlyyyyy gets them so far). He's not thrilled with the results of this game, but he still is in good spirits and tells everyone they did great. Jaime doesn't even give Sy shit for clearly messing them up because he's a Coppertale~

Even though Sy's team lost (and it feels weird to see Sy trying to captain an opposing team) Chris tells them all they did great by enthusiastically patting their backs. And also ruffling Jaime's hair - his ruffling is a weird mix between aggressive and affectionate.

As with the individual tryouts, Etta is relaxed and confident. The Chasers and Beaters on her team seem happy to discuss strategy amongst themselves, leaving her free to concentrate on her role. She gets a tiny bit distracted watching the game (she can't help it! she loves watching Quidditch as well as playing it!) and blames herself for a missed opportunity to get the Snitch. SHE HAD ONE JOB. But hey ho, the next skirmish is starting soon and there's no time to mope. DO BETTER NEXT TIME, ETTA.
