TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

TEAM GOOSEBERRY TRYOUTS

This is the day many of Gooseberry's Quidditch players have been waiting for. The mood is tense, as a lot of the participants have pinned a great deal on making this team. Thorn repeatedly tries to assure the athletes that this won't be a make or break deal for their Quidditch career, but a lot of his words fall on deaf ears. It's a brisk January morning, and although the bleachers have been magically warmed for supporters, the players are still going to have a chilly day.

Tryouts will take all day. Starting at 10:00 AM, players will do individual trials. Then the players and audience will break for lunch. At 1:00 PM tryouts will resume with three small skirmishes. Players don't know which team they'll be on until minutes before the games begin.

Thorn says that he intends to post the final roster tomorrow, but he'll let everyone know if there's a delay. (What this means is that if this IC/OOC is busy and we get a lot of information from it, we can probably make a decision tomorrow. But if it's slow, we'll wait until after the lottery event to make the announcement.)

THE RULES
  • There are two stages to the tryouts:

    • Individual Tryouts: Mr. Thorn has drills set up to observe individuals on technical skill. He's looking for accuracy, speed, and skill on a broom.

      • Chasers focus on passing and scoring.
      • Beaters on accuracy and strength.
      • Keepers on defense and alertness.
      • Seekers on agility and perception.

    • Skirmishes: Thorn randomly assigns teams and has them play one another on the spot. The games last about 30-45 minutes, and there's no time to strategize. He has an eye out for teamwork and flexibility.

  • Only characters that signed up are eligible for a spot on the team.

  • There are not any scouts present. They won't arrive until the first game against Ilvermorny, and after that they will attend games regularly.

  • The results of the skirmishes are random and do not have any impact on if your character is chosen or not.

  • However, things said and done in this IC/OOC might.

  • Players will be chosen based on three major criteria:

    • ACTIVITY: Is your character social and contributing to the game and subplots? Being a presence in the game will contribute to being selected. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to be involved in the metaplot (we realize that's random-ish) or that sheer comment count will win you a spot, but characters that are accessible and engaged will get preference.

    • CHARACTER ARC: Does being selected serve the arc of the character in an interesting way? Does it sound like being on the team will create some interesting challenges? These questions will be taken into consideration as we build the team.

    • RNG: In cases where we can't choose between two characters, we'll leave it up to random chance.

  • One character will be chosen to be the Captain of the team, who will be responsible for arranging practice times and building strategy. If you have any strong opinions about your character not being captain, we will take their name off the list of potential captains.

If losing does anything good for Leo, it's the fact that it takes away his last veneer of civility and makes him more merciless, which might explain the fact that they were apparently pretty good at chasing away Chasers this time. If only Wainwright, that little shit, had not snuck through. He regrets not targetting him personally any more than he already did (which was some! Just not enough.)

At the end of everything, he's not sure whether to be proud or disappointed, and goes back to the stands quietly, replaying everything in his head with moments highlighted of where he went wrong and what he regrets already. Leo's weird.

As fantastic as winning feels, watching his captain lose is less great. Once they've all dismounted, Ulysses tries to catch Leo's eye. If he manages it, he smiles and gives him two thumbs up.

Leo shoots off a quick salute at this, and he'll tell Ulysses how well he did (in ridiculous detail, inevitably,) next time they see each other. Leo's REALLY proud of him and all of Ebonhide today.

Chris gives Leo a weirdly enthusiastic 'you played good' pat on the back instead of bragging. Because he's in a great mood so everybody played amazing.

Leo does not trust this entirely.
But he's so much about being sportsmanlike in public, and Chris really did play well. So he smiles and says Chris did awesome, thanks for the game.
And then hurries off before it can turn into gloating, which he's way too nervous for right now.

...And then, like with Chris, make a quick getaway before she can start bragging.

Knowing he's going up against Fiori makes Chris more ruthless only because he knows Fiori can be a brutal beater. and game one is the first game he's won all year okay But there's something slightly different about Chris's gameplay. Whereas in most coppertale games, he's ruthless and wild, intent on incapacitating, here there's a sense of control to every hit and a clear aim. Instead of breaking bones, Chris is intently focused on making sure none of his team breaks a bone. Game one was about how hard he could hit the opponent, on purpose he makes game two about his ability to deflect bludgers before they make contact with his own team.

After the game, after Reid caught the snitch, Chris gives him a very enthusiastic hug because they haven't caught a snitch in a very long time too okay. Like okay this game doesn't technically matter but Reid caught the snitch you guys. Chris is just so proud.

Hugging Reid is a lot like hugging a barely tolerant cat. He's good for two seconds and then the squirming starts.

All the same, he's very pleased by the win and catching the snitch and it all feels so good. Caring about winning might be one of the worst decisions he ever made, but now that he has the Snitch in his hand and everyone is happy and he's happy and he's forgotten all about how stressful it is.

Roxie actually jolts in her seat when Reid catches the Snitch, letting out an enthusiastic (and loud) curse exclamation in German. She has the good grace to look a little bit sheepish about it afterward - but only a little.

Ulysses never thought he'd say this, but boy, he is really appreciating Chris' strategy right now. Team 3 is giving them a run for their money, and without Chris and Quinn, he probably would've eaten shit a few times that match. Some of those bludgers came awfully close. Dodging them was fun, but distracting, so while he, Faye and Levi get some brilliant passes in there and even manage to score twice... Ulysses thinks they might lose this one.

And then, they don't. Reid gets heartily clapped on the back by Ulysses when they all land. What a good day this has turned out to be!

It takes Quinn a couple of minutes to catch on to Chris' defensive strategy and she does her best to mirror it for the remainder of the match. Of course, deflected Bludgers are deflected into someone else whenever possible, and her talents ultimately lie in 'offense' territory.

Although the teenage angst mopey deep and brooding disposition is still stewing beneath the surface at the end, the skirmishes have visibly improved her attitude. Trying to destroy bones will do that to a girl (well, this girl), but so will getting to play two whole short games, beating Bludgers alongside one of your best friends, winning a match, and watching your Seeker catch the Snitch in the other. Even though they're on opposing teams, Quinn will try to give congratulatory hugs to any jays that accept and insist that they did so well and what a show and did you see that goal, wooow!

Guys, playing Quidditch puts Quinn in a really. good. mood.

I imagine they got a one two punch down. Where Chris deflects the bludger from a chaser toward Quinn and Quinn whacks it full force at some poor opponent. Since asking Quinn to go full defensive with him is like asking hell to freeze over.

Jeffy felt like they were on fire this time, so what if someone else caught the snitch?? It does not matter how long they've been going, Jeffy will not realize he's even slightly tired until tryouts are over, and he puts ALL OF HIS ENERGY in this second skirmish. ALL OF IT.

He's still proud of how their chaser team did, because 50-20 means they did their jobs and clearly worked so super well together, more high fives. Or fist bumps? Hugs? WHATEVER MAN, YOU'RE ALL GREAT, COME HERE.

Levi is definitely trying his best, and he's good at passing the Quaffle but his weakness is scoring goals. He wonders if it was a mistake to try to score instead of focusing on passing it to the other teammates, but their success in their first skirmish gave him the confidence to try. It was his fault for underestimating little Susana since Team 1, whom Team 2 already beat, had a 20 point lead on them in the last skirmish.

He knows Ree's play style, but Fiori is definitely a forced to be reckoned with. The other team is doing great and he can't help but feel proud of his sons on the other team for scoring so many goals.

But also fuck them, they're sophomores. Their future isn't riding on this and they have two more years of opportunities to prove their worth.

He's certain the other team is about to win until Reid snatches the snitch out of the air and Levi swerves on his broom to gape at him. "THAT'S MY BEAUTIFUL SPIDER MONKEY!!!!" he starts to scream, bouncing on his seat before taking off on his broom to roll through the air in celebration.

Ana is in the zone still, though she feels angry at herself for letting in those two goals. Still, she keeps her head in the game, working with her new teammates and enjoying how it feels to figure out a unit that isn't the one she's used to. She isn't confident enough to take charge and be the leader, but will offer comments and input when asked while working with her team.

The loss is disappointing, but she's not mad at anyone about it. In fact, she's pretty jazzed by how well they played seeing as none of them are used to playing with each other.
