Elphaba isn't the wicked witch you're looking for ([info]tothewesternsky) wrote in [info]wariscoming,

Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:claudia donovan, elphaba

Who: Claudia and Elphie
What: Meeting and showing Caludia around town a bit.
When: Not long after this
Where: Starting outside the complex, then around Lawrence
Warnings: Shouldn't be too high

This place certainly had quite the effect on Elphaba. Despite her current state of being blackmailed, having both herself and Galinda being watched, here she was reaching out to a new arrival. She still didn't understand herself with this new need for reaching out to people, but she'd credit that to Galinda and Elena's influence. Well, and Bonnie and Caroline when they had been there before. It really did seem that in the times when she was so close to closing herself off again and not letting anyone in, someone came along to make sure that didn't happen. Bonnie had done that when Jack had been sent back home. Galinda and Elena had done that when Bonnie had been sent back home. And now in the wake of Elena being sent back to her world, here she was actively reaching out to someone new. Perhaps it was also due to the fact she was getting so absolutely paranoid knowing she was being watched, and she just wanted to do something that seemed normal and mundane. So, she would do this and try to forget about being watched. Let Moriarty's men watch her, she wouldn't act any differently than normal. Though inwardly she'd want to constantly look over her shoulder, but she couldn't give off the feeling that she was in trouble or scared. Not now.

So doing her best to steel herself against those feelings, she changed her clothes, put her hair into a braid, then cast the degreen spell. Grabbing her coat, she told Galinda she was going out for a while to show one of the new arrivals around the city a bit. She walked over to the complex, sliding her hands into the pockets of her jacket. She could feel the eyes on her, and she knew that even without the green skin, Moriarty's men knew who she was. So she just kept herself in check and walked as though she didn't know they were there. No reason to tip anyone off that she needed to be watched closer than she all ready was.

When she arrived at the complex, she waited outside the door, looking up at the building. She'd been there so rarely, it always gave her pause to know how many displaced people lived there. And she had no doubt in her mind that they would form a lynch mob against her when it was revealed she was the one that was shielding Moriarty from detection by magic. She knew it wasn't her fault. Had she not helped the man, she'd currently be in jail and Galinda would probably be dead, or worse. But that didn't mean she wasn't trying to find some way out of it. She just needed to be very careful in doing so. Finding a loop hole wouldn't be easy, she knew that. But for now, she was going to be good, and she was going to potentially make a new friend. Which was still a strange concept to the witch. Even in the year she'd been here and the friends she'd made, it still amazed her when she was treated nicely by people and grew to be their friend.

Claudia was still kind of confused on this whole Kansas: The Apocalypse thing, but she was just trying to go with what she was given and so far, she was doing all right. She had a place to stay for the time being until she could figure out a way to get home, if it was possible, though she was being told that it wasn't, so she wasn't putting too much stock into it. But Claudia was never one to entirely loose hope, either.

She was glad to have someone coming to show her around, though. The only places she knew at this point were the coffee shop she'd found when she first arrived and the complex, so this little tour that she was going to being going on would be a good way to start off her time in Kansas. She was at least sure of that.

She walked out the front doors of the building to find a very not-green Elphaba waiting for her. She smiled as she jumped off the last step and extended her hand for a shake, "Claudia, in the flesh! Nice to officially meet you."

When Claudia came out of the complex, Elphaba turned her attention to the other girl, returning the smile. Smiling, thankfully, came to her more naturally these days. And at least she had something to focus on now other than the eyes she felt on her back. She extended her hand, shaking Claudia's.

"Hello Claudia, it's nice to meet you in person." The question of whether or not Claudia was ready was obvious and went without saying. "Is there anything you'd particularly like to know where it is? Or shall we just go wherever the sidewalk takes us? And if you even say follow the Yellowbrick Road, I may hit you. Fair warning." Elphaba had to chuckle a little. Wizard of Oz jokes didn't sit well with her, for obvious reasons, but there were occasions when she did find them funny, if for no other reason than to poke fun at that stupid story that wasn't even true to begin with.

Before heading somewhere, she'd wait for Claudia's response. After all, there was a lot to see in Lawrence. Though sometimes the whole having plenty to do was very much lacking here. This was Kansas after all.

"I vote for just going wherever feels right. And you can point out the need-to-knows as we go." She nodded, laughing a little at her joke. "Well, I won't make promises, cause I'm sure that phrase has come out of my mouth at some point and it's likely to do so again, but...I'll try my best not to." She grinned. She didn't know anything about Elphaba outside of the movie and the musical, but she figured if she was going to be trapped in some multiverse with fictional people, she may as well take the time to get to know the ones that weren't trying to kill people.

"Let's goooo...." she glanced right, then left, then back again, "This way!" she said, swinging her arm to point in the direction she was indicating, which seemed as good as any and like there might be more to see in that general direction. Or she might be wrong, that happened more than she might like to admit.

"That works for me." Which really was a good plan. Sometimes wandering did work better than having a determined destination. "As long as you try, I won't hold it against you." Elphaba smiled, well knowing there were some hot buttons she had, but she was trying to keep her temper under control these days. Flying off the handle didn't exactly do anyone any good, especially now that one of the times she'd snapped was being used against her.

Glancing to where Claudia pointed, Elphaba nodded. "I say that's a good way." So she started heading in that direction. "As I'm sure you've all ready discerned, while there are things to do around here, it can still get boring. Kansas City isn't overly far from here, and tends to have more exciting, non-Apocalyptic things going on. Well, at least most of the crazy that happens here seems to be focused here in Lawrence." Though obviously the Apocalypse thing would eventually get to the whole world, but it was starting here.

"So where are you from?" Because Elphaba was curious. She liked learning about other people, it did help her expand her horizons and know more about this world and the places other displaced people came from. It was hard to tell what kind of place Claudia had come from. Was she from a place similar to this one? Had she dealt with the supernatural in her world? And if Claudia needed further explanation on just what they were up against in this world, she'd be more than happy to explain.

Claudia smiled and walked along with her. "Well, it doesn't really sound like this is a place that has all that much potential to get boring, what with the whole Apocalypse thing and all." She pointed out. "Then again, how long have you been here? I guess after awhile that almost becomes normal, right?" She shrugged. She had been pulled into her own weird world when she'd joined the Warehouse team, and eventually the weird she faced there was almost normal.

"I was staying in South Dakota, mostly. Traveled some, though, for work. If you can call it that. It was more like one insane adventure after another. No Apocalypse, though." She wasn't sure how much she should really explain. The Warehouse was kind of a top-secret thing, but she wasn't exactly in her world anymore. "I'm not sure how the whole not-being-in-my-world thing goes in the how-much-I-can-talk-about-it thing..." She pursed her lips and shrugged.

"Well true, there's always something to keep things exciting." Elphaba agreed. After all, it was true. "I've been here almost a year and a half now. And yeah, it does kind of become normal after a while. After the adjustment period and the first two or three really crazy or horrible things that happen, you just learn to roll with it." Some things were definitely easier to go with than others. Elphaba had, for the most part, gotten over the torture she'd been through a couple months earlier.

She listened as Claudia told her about having been in South Dakota and traveling. "At least the adventure part was exciting? Doesn't leave you wanting for more or anything." She walked along, pointing out a restaurant that was pretty good. "I understand. But from my experience, there's no backlash about talking about things here. Though of course there is the fact that the seal can bring anyone from anywhere at anytime, so just keep that in mind. People from your world could show up at some point, and hopefully not the ones who'd frown on you talking if you chose to. I know I won't repeat anything. I'm good at keeping secrets." She wasn't going to make Claudia say anything if she didn't want to, but Elphaba was putting that out there. Because from her experience, having someone to trust upon suddenly being in this world was a plus. It had kept her from closing herself off completely from people.

"A year and a half, really?" For some reason, with hearing about the seal sending people back the same as it stole the away, Claudia hadn't entertained the idea that it might keep people around for such great lengths of time. Maybe it was wishful thinking on her part, hoping to be tossed back into her own dimension where things were familiar. "I guess those of us that are used to crazy and horrible might adjust a little easier, yeah?" She wasn't sure if that was a correct assumption, really.

"Could use a break from adventure every now and then, but at the same time, I don't think I'd know what else to do with myself." She admitted with a soft laugh, making a mental note to remember that restaurant for future outings. "Maybe I'll tell you about it some day." So far, Claudia didn't see any reason not to trust Elphaba, but that didn't mean she was going to let her guard down just yet. For all she knew, this whole alternate dimension could have been some artifact thing and she wasn't ready to deal with repercussions that could come for spilling secrets to the wrong person.

"I know, it's crazy to think about being here that long. But you know, I'd rather be here than be in Oz. I at least have friends here," she added a bit sadly. That was when the seal wasn't being evil and taking her friends away one by one. At least she still had Galinda and Damon here. If Galinda got sent back home, Elphaba didn't know what she'd do. "I think that's a good assessment. I've seen people who come from perfectly normal worlds who have an incredibly hard time adjusting. The rest of us that have dealt with crazy and horrible before seem to have an easier time adjusting."

"When I showed up here, I didn't think I'd get used to not having to run for my life, but I adjusted. There's plenty of things to keep you busy around here when the crazy, life-threatening situations aren't happening." Elphaba smiled gently. "If you do, I'll definitely listen." The witch was starting to relax for the first time since Moriarty had started blackmailing her to help him. And she was also kind of forgetting about the whole being watched thing. At least until they got to a corner and she glanced around while waiting for the light to change. She spotted a guy behind her lighting up a cigarette, his eyes fixed on her. One of Moriarty's men, no doubt. Elphaba sucked in a breath and quickly turned her attention back forward, trying not to seem like she was on edge. "Up ahead is a bookstore. I spend far too much time in to be healthy for anyone. And the public library isn't that far away. It's about a block or two that way." Elphaba pointed to where the library was, covering up her newly found tension and heightened paranoia. She could be normal, she could behave herself and not give Moriarty reason to kill her or anyone else. And she sure as hell wasn't going to put Claudia into that position after having just met.

"I just wish my friends were. If Pete and Myka were here, I'd be good. But there's something about this place that just screams 'hey, Claudia, welcome to Delusion Land' and I already sometimes think the life I've been living the last few years might be some weird way I've built up in my head to cope with what's really going on...so, landing here, definitely not helping in the 'making Claudia think she's sane' department."

"That would definitely take an adjustment, that's for sure. But hey, not running for your life is a step up, right? So maybe this place isn't all bad." She shrugged, not really have anything to base that statement on, but she figured adjusting would be like anything else. It just took time. "Hey, nothing wrong with devouring some books every now and then. Unless you're literally devouring them. Then you might have a problem." She laughed softly and made more mental notes of the places Elphaba was pointing out to her.

"They could very well show up. I've learned not to rule anything out in this place. Personally, I think all of us are a little delusional in our own way, which makes us all normal. I'd be worried if someone showed up who wasn't phased at all by any of this. Those are the people that really have something wrong with them. And are usually the ones who go insane and try to kill us all." Which was a fair point, really. The people that seemed to have no issue whatsoever with showing up in this place seemed to almost always turn out to be the ones who tried to kill them.

"Definitely a step up. There is a bright side to everything, you just sometimes have to look for it." Coming from Elphaba, that was quite the statement. She wasn't optimistic by any stretch of the definition, but she did know there was a good side to things. "I have yet to see anyone literally devour a book. Well, one of my professors at Shiz University in Oz ate them. But he was a goat, so that explains that. So perhaps I should amend my statement to not having seen any human eat a book." After crossing the street, Elphaba glanced one way, then the other, deciding on where to go. "If we go this way, we'll go by the library. Over that way there's this really good cafe that has some really good tea. And coffee, but I'm more a tea drinker. Galinda has forever scared me away from ever consuming caffeinated coffee."

"It would be kind of epic if they did. And I agree it would probably prove to be bad if someone wasn't phased by the crazy, but...definitely makes you wonder." She nodded at Elphaba's comment about the people who weren't phased. "I'll remember that. Be slightly suspicious and wary of too-well-adjusted people."

"Silver linings are kind of hard to find sometimes, but they're always there." She tipped her head slightly to the side. "A goat professor? I have not seen it all." She laughed softly and walked across the street, following Elphaba wherever she decided to go and continuing to take note of the places she was pointing out. "Coffee is of the GODS! I can't imagine why you wouldn't like it!"

"Exactly. Unless, of course, someone says they've been here before, then don't be wary of them adjusting. The seal like to send people back and forth sometimes. It's like a yo-yo." While Elphaba hadn't experienced that herself, she'd had friends that got sent back. It sucked, but Elphaba was very glad she wasn't being used as a personal yo-yo for the seal to play with.

"They are. It took me a very, very long time to realize that." Elphaba glanced at Claudia, smiling as she remembered Doctor Dillamond. "In Oz, animals could speak, and some even were teachers. Doctor Dillamond, he was my favorite professor. He was the only animal on the faculty by the time I got to Shiz." And then that train of thought went into very unpleasant places, so she instead focused on Claudia's coffee comment. "I don't completely disagree, but Galinda consumes coffee like it's air. And she's hyper and energetic without the caffeine, so you can barely imagine what she's like when she overdoses on caffeine. One time she tried at least 20 different coffees in the span of maybe two hours? Some cafe place had free samples, so she had to try them all. I'm still recovering from that episode and that was a few months ago."

"I would be really pissed if I had to jump back and forth between this place and home on any kind of more-than-once-basis. That's ridiculous." She shook her head. "Is there any kind of pattern or is it just at random? I mean, I could end up back home tomorrow if the seal decided that's where I should be, or is it like 'you've been useful and all, but your use has run out, go home'?"

"I still question it sometimes. But I usually have Pete or Myka or Artie around to be like 'chin up, Claudia' or whatever." She smiled, "That's kind of cool. Talking animals...I'd just want to take one home and keep it for pet. You'd never be alone that way, right?" She laughed at Elphaba's story about Galinda and the sample coffees. "Wow, I don't think I could hanlde that much at once, even if they were just samples."

"I think it's mostly random. There's also been things the seal has pulled through that somehow just disappear after a period of time. Like a year or so ago we had an invasion of giant bugs from space. They were everywhere and then one day, they weren't. So it could be some random combination of being totally random and deciding things have outlived their usefulness." It at least put some perspective and reason into an otherwise non-sensical happening around this place.

"That is the beauty of friends, isn't it?" Elphaba smiled gently. She'd never seen the silver lining until she'd met Galinda. "It was one of the things I loved most about Oz. Animals were always nice to me, and I to them. Then things went wrong, animals started losing the ability to speak because they were being caged. Guess it only goes to show good things don't always last." She shook her head slightly to try and keep herself from thinking too much about the Wizard. "Galinda is completely endearing and wonderful, but she's just too much to take when she consume caffeine like that. I keep decaf in the house now, but she still gets the caffeinated kind when she goes to work. It's rather disconcerting."

"Giant bugs from space?" She repeated, a rather incredulous look crossing over her features. "I am so glad I missed that one." Claudia made a mental note to stay inside forever the second anything like that happened again. "I guess it's a good way to keep it balanced...and to keep everyone on their toes."

"It is. They're always there to pick you up when you're down." she smiled. Pete was the best at making people smile with his goofy antics. "Isolation is one of those things that just never leads to anything good." Or at least that was what she thought. She laughed softly, "You have informed her that moderation is key, right?"

"Yeah, it was horrifying, to say the least. Apparently they were from something this world calls 'Star Wars.' I do not want to meet those things again. It is, not that it's necessarily a good thing all the time. But bad isn't the only thing that happens. Some plain weird things happen and sometimes good things. But mostly the bad life-threatening things happen."

"They are." Elphaba smiled gently, grateful for the friendships she'd had here. At least she knew if she ever went back to her world and died or something, she had learned what it was like to have friends and to be accepted. "No, it isn't. Some people should learn that." At the comment about Galinda, Elphaba could only smile and shake her head. "I have, but then she gives me this pouty puppy-dog type look that I just can't say no to. I have a weak spot for...that look." Elphaba quickly glanced away from Claudia, partly to hide the faint blush on her cheeks and partly to see where they were. "Ah. Library. To the right." Yeah. That was a horrible cover there.

"Sounds like it." She nodded. "That's good that it's not all bad. I mean, I guess the seal is kind of in track of keeping things balanced, right? So it has to throw something good at this place every now and then to keep all the bad off kilter a little somehow." Another one of those assumptions she had no clue whether she was right about, but it sounded good, seemed logical. The world, in general, was a pretty descent balance of good and bad, so that should still apply here, even if things were weird, right?

"They really should. I mean, if people could just get that through their heads, there might be a lot less people running around trying to take over the universe or whatever. But then maybe that goes back to that balance thing. If it was all good, all the time, we wouldn't know to appreciate it, right? So there has to be bad for good to exist." Claudia noticed Elphaba's demeanor change, ever so slightly, with that last little comment about Galinda and she couldn't help but smile a little, but she wouldn't comment on it. "I'll remmeber that one, definitely. I'll probably spend a lot of time there, if I'm not playing with all the new technological stuff I'm sure this place has, with all the world-crossing." She laughed. She was a techno-geek, and would never even try to deny it.

"I do think there always has to be some balance of good and evil otherwise things get out of balance and that is never good. We could probably sit here and discuss the topic at nauseam for years and not have a clear answer. So it'll just save brain cells and headaches to say the seal is chaotic and does what it wants." Elphaba shrugged slightly. While she tended to be the first to question something, the seal was something all together different than anything else she'd come across.

"This is true. People wouldn't learn to appreciate the good they have in their lives if there wasn't bad to go along with it." Oz knew Elphaba had had far more than her share of bad in her life, so she had a great appreciation for what good she did have. And a few horrible things aside, she'd had a lot of good here. Perhaps there was something to karma, after all. Once she took a breath and got herself back in complete control, she smiled. "You may see me in there sometimes. If the city isn't busy exploding with the latest round of crazy, I do like to sit in the history section. I've actually been thinking about taking some college classes, but I don't know. I'd be nervous around all those people, and the whole green skin thing can be hard to work around. The spell I use only lasts for a couple hours at a time, and I've all ready been caught out in public once when it wore off." She would just leave out the part where she'd also been drunk, but it had been needed. And it led to her and Elena growing closer as friends. She was just lucky she'd managed to get out of sight of people before they realized she had unnatural skin. "So you like technology?" It was perhaps obvious, but it would lead to learning more about Claudia.

She laughed softly and nodded, "Fair enough," She agreed, knowing that if there was no clear answer the possibility of theories was endless and therefore, pointless to try to discuss any further. Claudia was a naturally curious person and when she came across something new, she usually tore it apart until she had figured it out, inside and out, but the seal wasn't something she could play with and study. It was just this thing that controlled this world, and others.

"That would be a problem," She nodded, "But if you can figure out some way to make it last longer, college courses could be fun," Then again, Claudia liked learning where most people her age didn't enjoy that aspect of life. "Oh, yeah, it's like, my 'thing', you know?" She laughed, "That's actually how I landed the job I had back home. Kind of cracked the security system...but it was all in good faith. I was trying to save my brother. He was stuck between dimensions...it was bad stuff."

More than a few times, Elphaba had tried to understand how the seal worked. But it seemed that not even those native to this place knew how they worked. So all she could do was form her own hypothesis. Whether it was correct or not was another matter, but it could definitely be headache inducing if one thought about it too long. So she'd stopped focusing energy on that topic, and just went with whatever came through it.

"I can probably re-write the spell now, knowing aspects of other magics I've encountered here. I just haven't actually done that yet." She should really get around to doing that one of these days so she could stay out in public longer without worrying about having to go into a restroom and casting the spell again. Elphaba listened as Claudia explained about her brother. "Did you manage to save him?" She hoped she'd been able to. Elphaba well knew what it felt like to want to save a sibling, what it felt like to move the entire world if it meant saving them.

"You should probably work on that, definitely. It'd be pretty useful, right?" Claudia nodded in response to her question, "I did. It was a crazy ride getting it done, and I was kind of...not in the best state of mind when I was on that little, uh, mission? But I got it done and I saved Josh and ended up with a job out of the deal." She laughed softly. The course of events that lead up to her working at the Warehouse were anything but normal, but she was starting to think that maybe normal didn't exist in any dimension, ever.

"He was stuck between dimensions for like...twelve years, I thought he was dead for so long..." She bit her lip, thinking about that time in her life wasn't something she liked, but she didn't see the point in not giving Elphaba the full story. "I had started having these....visions of him and I thought I was going insane, I actually checked myself into a mental hospital, but when I figured it out, I knew I had to do whatever it took to save him, you know?"

"It definitely would be." At least at this point, Elphaba did have more faith in actually writing spells that didn't have some horrendous backlash when cast. Elphaba listened as Claudia told her about her brother. It must have been horrible to go through twelve years of thinking he was dead, and then checking herself into a mental hospital. But Elphaba was glad that there was a happy ending in that respect.

"I can't even imagine what it must've been like to go through that thinking he was dead for twelve years. But at least you figured it out and saved him. And I understand, doing anything to save someone you love." Elphaba had once done the same for Fiyero, or at least tried to. And even though she'd had a strained relationship with her sister, if given the chance, she'd turn back the clock and save her from getting killed. "At least you know now you weren't crazy, that he was trying to send you a message the only way he could, right?"

Recounting the story about her brother wasn't as hard as Claudia thought it might be. Then again, she'd come to peace with the whole thing, so it was expected to be easier to relive now. That's how it was supposed to be when you healed from something tragic, right? Too bad it took so much time to come to terms with things like that, though.

"It was definitely not easy," Claudia admitted, shaking her head. "But finding him, once I realized it was all real and I wasn't insane? Words can not describe the way that felt, honestly." She smiled, remembering that moment when she saw him for the first time again.

"I can only imagine. But I'm glad that everything worked out for you." Elphaba smiled. She did wonder what it was like to have something like that. Yes, she loved her sister, had always done everything she could to help her until the whole Boq thing happened, but she also had an intense jealousy of Nessa. Nessa had always been the perfect child, the one their father loved. Actually, he wasn't really Elphaba's father, she had to keep reminding herself of that. All the neglect and abuse she'd taken from Frexspar had been a far cry from the normal definition of family life and love.

But instead of dwelling on it and letting it turn her mood sour, Elphaba looked up and saw an ice cream shop. "Aha! This place has the best ice cream in town. Do you want some? They have pretty much every flavor you can think of, and then some." She hadn't even realized how they'd gotten here, she'd just been walking and talking and listening, occasionally pointing out the landmarks. How time flew!

Claudia had been following Elphaba, blabbing all over her about her brother, but she had been paying attention to all of the places she pointed out, making mental notes of how to get there. "Ice cream is something I will always say yes to!" She grinned.

She walked inside the ice cream shop and started trying to think of just what she might want. She was looking over their flavor options and glanced over at Elphaba, "You weren't kidding, they have, like, everything here." She laughed softly.

"It definitely is good no matter what." Elphaba grinned and headed into the shop with Claudia. Now was the hard part, deciding just what kind of ice cream she wanted. Ice cream was something they hadn't had in Oz, so she was one to try new flavors. Though she had her favorites. Today it was all about what she had the taste for.

"Right? They make it nearly impossible to choose which flavor to get." She usually stayed away from any ice cream that was green, unless she felt particularly snarky that day. It just felt strange to her to eat something that was the same color as her skin. That was also why she tended to avoid eating green vegetables whenever possible. She pursed her lips as she studied the flavors. She was stuck between Rocky Roads and Moose Tracks.

"It's one of those things that's good no matter the occasion, and it's also kind of a number one comfort snacks." That seemed to be true for a lot of people in Claudia's experience. When things go wrong, get your girlfriends and ice cream and just forget your troubles.

"They do." She laughed softly. After another moment of looking over her choices, Claudia decided on chocolate chip cookie dough and gave the person at the counter her order, going after her wallet in her messenger bag to pay for it.

"It is good no matter what." How many times had she indulged herself on it here when she was feeling down or just needed something sweet? It managed to always make things better for a while, if only because it helped take one's mind away from darker things.

After a few moments, Elphaba decided on rocky roads. She saw Claudia going for her wallet. "Ah, no, this one is on me." She stated, stepping up the counter and pulling out her own wallet, ordering her ice cream, then pulled out money to pay for both of the ice creams. Elphaba was feeling nice today, and it was a way to make new friends, which still was odd to her, but she just shrugged it off.

Claudia glanced up when she heard the other woman's denial for her paying for her own ice cream. "You don't have to do that, you know?" She smiled, "But thanks, it's really sweet of you."

Another moment later and she had her ice cream in hand and spun to find a place to sit, deciding on an empty table in the back corner. She set her bag down beside the table before she sat down and dug in. She couldn't quite remember the last time she'd actually had ice cream, so much had happened with Sykes, who had time to think about the little things? But now she did and she fully intended on doing just that, at least while she could.

Elphaba smiled at Claudia, then paid for the ice cream. "You're welcome. I like treating when I can." After getting her ice cream, she followed Claudia to the table, sitting down across from her. Slipping her coat off, she fixed the sleeves and neck of the turtleneck she wore, covering as much skin as possible. She was still relatively self-conscious from the ordeal she'd been through a couple months earlier, but now the whole Moriarty thing wasn't helping much in her getting over it.

"So now that you know some of the layout, is Kansas everything you expected? Though if really want the open nothingness that is the landscape, you just need to go a little ways out of the city." Elphaba chuckled. She'd flown over the area enough to be familiar with the landscape. Kansas was incredibly...dull. It really was no wonder that stupid little farmgirl had been the way she was if this had been where she'd grown up.

"It is your average town, I guess, all the right things in mostly the right places," she grinned. She held up a hand at the mention of open nothingness, "No need for all that. I'm Tech Girl, I need the civilization!" She laughed softly and took a bite of her ice cream. Truth be told, the Warehouse wasn't exactly in the middle of a giant city, but everything they needed was there, so she didn't exactly feel like she had to want for much in that respect. And action? Pft! There was always plenty of that to go around with an artifact going wrong somewhere.

"This was a fun little outing, though," she assured the other woman, nodding slightly. "And you know, learning where things were was just a bonus." She grinned widely. That was the way Claudia was, always trying to put a brighter spin on the dull and drab.

Taking a bite of her ice cream, Elphaba nodded. "I take it it's not that different from what you were used to. But at least it's civilization so you won't die or anything." While Elphaba had been used to being in the middle of nowhere, she didn't mind being in a city. At least with Lawrence if it got to enclosed for her, she could just take off on her broom and fly around for a while. There was enough open space that she could fly without being seen.

"I agree, it was. And I was glad to get some fresh air." She'd spent far too many days locked up inside her attic room, or just not going outside because of Moriarty. But this had been good for her, getting some air and meeting new people. Of course, in the back of her mind she did wonder if she was putting Claudia in danger by interacting with her, but Elphaba had needed someone to talk to that didn't know how to read her body language and know she was in trouble.

"Not too much," She admitted with a slight shake of her head, "It's not South Dakota, but...it's still basically the same world, I think, just a parallel." That sounded reasonable and seemed to be the most likely, as far as she could tell. She'd never been to Kansas, so she couldn't make a very direct comparison, but it all seemed relatively the same either way.

"Fresh air is always a good idea. A necessity, even." She smiled before taking another bite of her ice cream. The outing had done good for Claudia as well. Getting to know her new surroundings was a good way to start her time off here. "So, after this, I guess I'll just head back to the complex. I need to start getting settled, since I'm going to be here for awhile."

"At least it's just more adjusting to the whole Apocalypse thing than having to adjust to a whole new world on top of it." Elphaba took another bite of her ice cream, nodding in agreement about the parallel world. It was how she tended to think of this place considering the stories Elena and her other friends had of the Earth they were from.

"It is. I'm afraid I've been a hermit far too much of late." Mostly out of fear and paranoia, but she'd managed to forget about all that for a little while. Of course it was still there, and would no doubt return in full force once they parted ways, but it had been good to be able to relax a little. "Yeah, understandable. If you ever need anything, just let me know. I don't live at the complex, but I can always stop by." She smiled warmly at Claudia, grateful for this encounter.

"I don't know if I could handle all that, so I'm definitely glad it's the same world at the basic level." She nodded. That kind of big adjustment just might have made her tip over the edge and not come back. Which would be all kinds of bad.

"I do that a lot, without really realizing it. I'm not really the most social person... I'm better than I was, but...I'm not the typical social butterfly, you know?" She had definitely grown in that aspect quite a bit, but she wasn't so sure she might not revert back to those more reclusive ways considering her new circumstances.

"You know, I think you and I will get along just fine. I'm much the same way, fully content to have my nose in a book. Yet somehow I've managed to collect friends and be social during my stay here." Really, it still amazed her, though she really had to credit Jack and Bonnie for getting her started on that path. If it hadn't been for Jack's constant poking at her to get her to open up, and then Bonnie being there when Jack got sent back to his world, she would be the Wicked Witch of the West as this world seemed to know her as.

"And hey, you've gotten some familiarity with your surroundings, so I say this is an outing well executed!" Elphaba grinned a bit, perhaps the first genuine grin this entire time. But she was genuinely appreciating this, and she did have a fondness for helping out people who had no clue where they were and making friends.

"Sounds like a match made in...Kansas." She smirked slightly at the little joke, even if it was a bad one. That was, more than other things, one of the best ways Claudia knew how to deal with the insanity that was life. Jokes made things easier, somehow.

"Exactly." She grinned and finished off the last of her ice cream. "It was the perfect first outing of the Apocalypse." She shrugged. "Well, first for me, anyway. And there should be more of them in the future, I think." She smiled.

Elphaba laughed at that. All right, that joke she could handle. "It really does. And hey, it didn't involve little farmgirls stealing someone else's shoes." And she could live with that. Now if they got into dropping houses on people, then Elphaba wouldn't exactly find it funny. Normally she wouldn't find the shoe joke funny either, but right now? She did.

"Oh definitely, there should be more. I like you, Claudia." She said as she finished off her ice cream. "The world needs more joking and sarcasm in it."

She grinned, glad that she had liked that little joke, no matter how small it seemed. "Which is always a good thing," she nodded, "I'd be kind of pissed if someone was all up in my closet, stealing my shoes."

"Definitely, I've had a lot of fun today with you, Elphaba." She grinned. "I couldn't agree more. Which is why I try to put it out there as often as possible! In the appropriate situations and all, of course." She was socially adept enough not to make entirely inappropriate jokes and horribly bad times.

"As you should be! Defend your closet at all costs!" She chuckled. It was kind of sad, she'd almost forgotten how to laugh in the short time Moriarty had had her under his thumb. "It's war if someone tries to do that." Not that Elphaba was particularly keen on fashion, let alone shoes, but it didn't stop her from joking about it.

"Next time we should try one of those social things, like going to a club or something. Provided you're old enough, of course. I'm a bad judge of age sometimes." Elphaba scratched her head a little awkwardly. Considering some of her closest friends were underage but had fake IDs because of people in this place, she never really thought anything of it. "Exactly. There is a time and place for everything."

"Exactly. I mean, they're mine. Get your own. They mass produce them, you know?" She laughed, shaking her head. This was so...ridiculous, but it was good to be lighthearted.

"We should, it would be good. And for the record, I am old enough for a club." She nodded. "Oh, hey, I.D. I should get probably get one, huh?" She bit her lip. She hadn't even thought of that yet. "Exactly," she nodded. "I guess I should get back to the complex," She said, glancing outside. Time had kind of gotten away from them, not that she was complaining.

"Pretty much. You want them so badly, so get them somewhere else to ensure they fit." Elphaba laughed, also realizing this was a silly conversation, but she needed it. Not that she'd ever admit such a thing, but it was good to forget her worries and paranoia for a bit.

"Oh good. Girls night out sometime? Some of my friends like doing that every once in a while. When it happens, you're definitely invited." And then there was the comment about the I.D. "Oh yeah, if you want, there are people at the complex that can do that for you if you can't. Sam Winchester is one you could talk to, though I think a few others can get you one. I forget who, though." She didn't always pay attention to those kinds of things as she had an I.D. all ready. "I should probably get back home before my spell wears off in public. And before Galinda decides I've been kidnapped by glitter fairies or something." She shook her head a bit with a chuckle.

"Right. What good does it do to steal shoes when the chances of them fitting isn't all that likely." She stood up, grabbing her messenger bag to head out of the little ice cream shop.

"I'd definitely be into that." She nodded, a grin spreading across her lips at the idea. She hadn't ever been much of one to do the whole girls' night thing, but she figured it would be better to take what opportunities presented themselves here until she knew people a bit better. Claudia assumed if these people were friends with Elphaba, they couldn't be all that bad. She laughed softly, "No need to send her into a frenzy," She smiled, "I can get back to the complex on my own. Thanks again for showing me around."

"My thoughts exactly," she replied with a nod. Because really, it didn't make sense at all. Though she shouldn't really get too far into trying to understand that because it would only lead her to thinking about that Dorothy girl that took her sister's shoes and then she'd get upset and things would literally start flying around the place. And neither Elphaba nor Claudia needed to deal with that fallout right now.

"I will definitely let you know when we do that. Though we have this track record of planning a girls' night out, but never actually get around to it for one reason or another. Usually evil running amok in the city." But one of these days, they'd manage to get their act together. Standing up, Elphaba smiled and nodded at Claudia. "You're very welcome. I hope settling in goes easy for you and the crazy doesn't happen until you're more used to this place."
