Two unrelated items of note:

  • While previously I possessed a dim view of coffee, I decided to give one of your seasonal offerings a try, and I can now apologize profusely for my dismissal of all such beverages: pumpkin spice lattes are perfect. Simply perfect. We've nothing truly like it in Quur, save a cinnamon tea that's not nearly so comforting or sweet. If one of you entrepreneurial sorts wants to offer it up year round, I will consistently skulk within your shop.

  • Secondly, I awoke this morning very literally covered in books. It appears that a portion of my library from back home has found its way to me here in Vallo. I recently acquired even more tomes due to the untimely death of an ally/friend/mentor/traitor/wizard/drunk, but I had not had a chance back home to go through the sheer volume of texts. Should anyone wish to make me their personal lending library, the books are wide in subject and varied, including:
    • Fictional tales of the God Kings: Their Lives and Extremely Messy Deaths
    • A History of Notable Witches (this one was banned, and if you damage it, I will destroy you)
    • A discussion of hand-to-hand fighting techniques (common in the Blight)
    • a Vane epic tale that seems to be less about immortal heroes and their adventures and more of a who-slept-with-who-and-details-on-the-how (not mine, don't know where it came from),
    • my tenth year report on the Royal Houses of Quur that very nearly got me expelled (I stand by every word),
    • Poison Plants of the Southern Empire,
    • Gender Politics and the Horsemen of Jorat (for those of you interested in what it means to 'run with the herd', sexually) and
    • my father's book on soul magic, which I will only lend once I am convinced that you're of a sufficient moral character to be trusted with its contents.
Should anyone be interested. And/or kind enough to dig me out of this mess. Literally. I am still buried in books. They're... everywhere.

It's my first time - but many have experienced items from home appearing with very little warning. It appears to be the nature of this universe - it pulls from others.

Of course, Sabrina. Consider it yours.

You may find it a combination of fascinating and alarming; "witch" was a word that indicated not gender, but status. Anyone who did not go through the academy and were unregistered is considered a witch, and consequently dangerous. The fact is that women were not allowed at the academy, so the vast majority of witches do identify as female... but the current Empress, who is a witch in her own right, is working to change that.

You'll get a kick out of the God Kings. Some of them were decent sorts who tried their best to be fair despite their immense power, and the rest of them were atrocious. A tale as old as time.

As for the witches... yes, misogyny. As I mentioned to Sabrina, a "witch" is a person who identifies as male or female who did not receive their certification from the Academy. As women (up until Empress Tyentso) were not allowed to attend the Academy... well.

The wizards I inherited the bulk of this library from were extremely knowledgeable - to the detriment of implication about what this knowledge might engender. Still, there's something overwhelmingly beautiful about the sheer lot of books I'm suddenly in possession of.

God Kings are, by their nature, very difficult to kill. Thus, if one has a necessity to die, doing so is... well. You need creativity on your side. Yes, it's a very gory and detailed book.

I wouldn't ask to borrow it, as it sounds very important and my moral character shouldn't be trus, but soul magic sounds both familiar and intriguing. That being said, a hearty congratulations on the gift -- I received my personal library several months ago and it was quite the relief. I wouldn't say that I ever took the collection for granted, but I certainly felt its absence.

My father dealt with soul magic, both the good and bad (mostly the bad). His library on the subject is extensive, and of course I know a great deal about the subject, but... it's not magic I'm terribly fond of. What does it entail in your world? In ours, it's a method of control.
