Two unrelated items of note:

  • While previously I possessed a dim view of coffee, I decided to give one of your seasonal offerings a try, and I can now apologize profusely for my dismissal of all such beverages: pumpkin spice lattes are perfect. Simply perfect. We've nothing truly like it in Quur, save a cinnamon tea that's not nearly so comforting or sweet. If one of you entrepreneurial sorts wants to offer it up year round, I will consistently skulk within your shop.

  • Secondly, I awoke this morning very literally covered in books. It appears that a portion of my library from back home has found its way to me here in Vallo. I recently acquired even more tomes due to the untimely death of an ally/friend/mentor/traitor/wizard/drunk, but I had not had a chance back home to go through the sheer volume of texts. Should anyone wish to make me their personal lending library, the books are wide in subject and varied, including:
    • Fictional tales of the God Kings: Their Lives and Extremely Messy Deaths
    • A History of Notable Witches (this one was banned, and if you damage it, I will destroy you)
    • A discussion of hand-to-hand fighting techniques (common in the Blight)
    • a Vane epic tale that seems to be less about immortal heroes and their adventures and more of a who-slept-with-who-and-details-on-the-how (not mine, don't know where it came from),
    • my tenth year report on the Royal Houses of Quur that very nearly got me expelled (I stand by every word),
    • Poison Plants of the Southern Empire,
    • Gender Politics and the Horsemen of Jorat (for those of you interested in what it means to 'run with the herd', sexually) and
    • my father's book on soul magic, which I will only lend once I am convinced that you're of a sufficient moral character to be trusted with its contents.
Should anyone be interested. And/or kind enough to dig me out of this mess. Literally. I am still buried in books. They're... everywhere.

You're a climber? Not afraid of heights, then?

Extremely grim. The less said about it, the better. But it leaves me in a unique position of power with no love lost toward nobility.

Quite the opposite really. Are you afraid of heights?

Fair enough. Can I ask why you keep their name?

I'm a human with a reasonable concern for his own mortality, so - yes, yes I am. How did you learn to-- cavort upon roof tops and church steeples? I am under the impression that you and your sister dealt with zealots. Do they likewise cavort?

For a personal reason, I was a baby when I was taken. Both my parents have since died, and I had no memories of them. For political reasons, my-- real father was the previous Emperor of Quur. Claiming him as family in an official capacity would be-- fraught. And frankly fruitless, as I have no intention of ruling nor do I wish to delegitimize the current Empress. Finally, the House affords me privilege that I can and am taking advantage of to clean it up. House D'Lorus controls the dissemination of knowledge in both book and educational form, thus being able to exert real change on this sorry empire is possible. My close friends know of the truth; it is irrelevant to nearly anyone else.

Sometimes they do, sure. Most of the time, it's the best way to sneak up on someone. It may be a threat to one's mortality, but it's a nice fuck you to the establishment. Especially when you mean to tear that establishment down.

Suppose that makes sense. Starting to wonder, though, if everyone here is secretly some kind of royal and it's just me and Evie holding up the common folk end.

I suppose there's a rebellion in saying, "thank you, but I intend to use your chandelier as a swing".

If it's any consolation, my actual father was born a farmer before he became Emperor. So I'm a sorry excuse for anything royal. Besides, you and Evie put on a very entertaining fighting show.

Exactly. Besides, it's fun. You do have fun, right?

That does make it better, cheers.

Why does everyone keep asking me that? I'm buried in a literal mountain of books right now; obviously I have fun.

Oh obviously. Anything else tickle your fancy, outside of a book?

Do you mean... as in... sleeping? That's fun. Didn't used to do it enough.

This is brutal, mate. There is more to life than books and bed.

...organization? That's useful and fun.

(All right, I admit, I am putting you on a bit. But I've had very little time to-- figure out hobbies outside of getting my friends out of trouble when their asses are being kicked.)
